My windows XP computer does not defragment. I can run the defragment program, and i click defragment... it does the analyzing and then begins to defragment. Although at the bottom it says 1% complete and stays like that for hours. The defgragament does not go forward. It says that it is compacting files. I have run scan disk with both the checks in the scan disk. I have shecked for spyware... so i don't know why my defragment can't get past compacting files at 1%

The disk is 77% free, that is a 45gb hard drive with like 33gb free. |

Try running the defrag in safe mode if you haven't already done so. See if this makes a difference. |

You also need to turn off any antivirus or firewall program which you have running on your system. |

Hi Mark,
I had this - an absolute refusal of XP to continue to defrag despite plenty of disk space. After many hours trial-and-error and web searches I found the glitch/bug/annoyance resulted from installing XP's SP2 update.
There is, it would appear no need to uninstall SP2 just to get defrag working again! Just dowmload and install the very excellent Diskeeper (Executive Software International, Inc. Version: 8.0.478.0) from www.diskeeper.com - so successful was my trial of this truly excellent program that I have installed it on all four of my machines.
I have no commercial interest in advising you thus.
Maddie. |

Well nothing seems to work i tried doing it in safe mode, and it doesn't go, I turned off antovirus and all other programs running in the background, but what does work is the diskkeeper program. Although it does go a bit too slow, but better slow than not at all... so i'm just gonna use that program, also i do believe that executive software did make the defragment program that came with windows. |

You have to have enough memory (RAM) to defrag - its very memory intensive. How much have you got? |

Perhaps others might have more specific ideas if you could tell us more about the computer and its hard drive. |

Hi Mark 128mb ram is very scant for XP.Suggest adding at least another 128.Some suggestions here. http://tinyurl.com/dbegz
http://tinyurl.com/bktue
You might also try some tweaking to conserve XP's memory usage.Right click My Computer icon, select Properties, then Advanced tab.Under Performance click the Settings button. Now put a check in Adjust for best performance. This will uncheck all,now I prefer to put a check back in "Show Window contents while dragging" and "Use dropshadows for icon labels on desktop.Click on OK.Back at the Advanced tab, look at the botton for Error Reporting button, click it and choose Turn Off,then OK.While you're here, under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button and uncheck all under System Failure, except Write an event to system log. In Control Panel,Sounds and Audio Device Properties click on the Sounds tab and under Sound scheme use the dropdown to select No Sounds to turn off all the XP chirps and beeps.
In Control Panel, look for Administrative Tools, open it then Services.Look for Indexing Service.Right click it,choose Properties and use the dropdown box to set this at Manual or Disabled.Indexing Service is a big resource hog. While in Services look for Messenger and set it disabled if not already. This is not the chat service, but a Windows service many spammers have learned to use to deliver popup ads. |

Go on - put more RAM in. And understand that defragging can sometimes take hours, especially if you have upgraded to a new operating system like you said you have done. |

Your computer does not recognise 133 MHz ram, if it is not compatible with 100 MHz. |
