For a short overview, please see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-UX

For more detail, see:
http://www.openpa.net/hp-ux_unix.html

HP-UX 10.20 and older were 32-bit only, and cannot run on modern PA-RISC hardware which is 64-bit only. These versions are thoroughly obsolete now: HP support for 10.20 and older ended at the end of June 2003.

HP-UX 11.00 introduced 64-bit support, kernel-level support for threads (1x1 thread model), NFSv3 support, and many other things.
HP support for 11.00 ended at the end of year 2006.

HP-UX 11.11 (= 11i v1) is still supported and for sale, though not for long: its End-Of-Sale date is set to 31-December-2009. 11.11 is the last version that can run on some hardware, so if you don't have it yet and need it, do not delay! End-of-Support will be at the end of year 2013.

The Itanium CPU architecture support was introduced and further refined in the two short-lived Itanium-only versions 11.20 (11i v1.5) and 11.22 (11i v1.6). These versions are now obsolete.

HP-UX 11.23 (11i v2) supports both Itanium and PA-RISC systems, and includes IPv6 support. Support for some older hardware was dropped out.

HP-UX 11.31 (11i v3) is the current level. It introduced a major update in storage management, native multipathing, NFS v4, cluster filesystem, and integrated virtualization.
