How can we check if a linux server is physical or virtual (hosted on VMWare) by just logging into the server remotely.

Run "lspci". If you don't have root access, you may have to use a full path: /sbin/lspci or /usr/sbin/lspci. Then look at the listing. If you see something like this, you are on a VMware virtual machine: [...] 00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller: VMware SVGA II Adapter [...] If you have root access, you can also use the dmidecode command: dmidecode |less If the "System Information" section says something like this, you're on a VMware virtual machine: Manufacturer: VMware, Inc. Product Name: VMware Virtual Platform MK

Yes using dmidecode command we can find out VM or physical sevrer. Here is the o/p VM -- #dmidecode | grep Manufacturer Manufacturer: VMware, Inc. Manufacturer: Intel Corporation Manufacturer: No Enclosure Physical -------- #dmidecode | grep Manufacturer Manufacturer: HP Manufacturer: HP
