Author Subject: 9250 new firmware      Add to my favorites

Here I am again!

Is it possible to downgrade back to the original firmware? The new firmware seems to cause at least 2 problems (and I don't really want to spend time isolating the detailed reasons for the errors):

Fax gateway - seems to provide invalid TIF file (maybe it switched to using MTIF or something?)

LDAP authentication against domain for sub-domain users

Thanks, Steve

The official public release of version 1 of the firmware that ships with the device is not on any public FTP site that HP has and that I am aware of. I will try to hunt the original RFU file down but this may take some time to locate. Due to the size I will have to create an FTP link until HP makes it public.

Have you called or e-mailed HP for this yet?

Others may gain from this as well.

I don't recall any major changes to the MTIFF versions that the devices can process, but there are three in all firmwares, TIFF G4, TIFF V6 and TIFF post 6. The later two have changes to the color compression methods that viewers use to decode the image and G4 is the standard for B/W Fax methods.

LDAP Authentication can be OU specific to the user that your BIND is using. A full LDAP DN value is expected or the test fails. Again, I don't recall any major changes here as well. As long as the users are published in the Root or Global Catalog directory the 9250C should get results.

If you have multi-domains, each domain entry needs to be listed or the authentication fails, typically DSS does a better job at this than the 9250C itself since it can hold more than one O= or DC= entry in memory. If using the Embedded LDAP feature of the device, you separate the other domains using a [|] character. In DSS 4.x you add each LDAP BIND string into the search root and you can now authenticate more than one OU or Sub-domain in theory but DSS gives you more options like Windows Negociated and not just LDAP.

Hi Kevin

Many thanks again for all your input.

In the meantime it seems like withe the new firmware Kerberos is now working which didn't work before, so that's one thing sorted.

But definitely the fax interface drops the wrong type of TIFF(I'll post the details later) and there's no fix for that except the old firmware.

Thanks again

I'm also having problems with an invalid TIFF format sent to GFI faxmaker. First thing I did with our new Digital sender was upgrade to upgrade to the latest firmware so I couldn't say if it worked before the upgade.

Steve,

A work around for faxmaker is to install an application to print the G4 TIFF to the fax printer driver. Not sure if this will help you:

Steve,

DSS 4.X should request that the 9250C generate a G4 MTIFF for almost all LanFax vendors except Castelle FaxPress, Gold-Fax and Object-Fax that use PCL5 instead.

What is the 9250C generating as the image format when using DSS LanFax?

What LanFax system(IFV) are you using?

I have the same problem with Facsys (mtiff/g4).
The 9200c model works correctly.
I don't know if it works with the original firmware.
I already spoke to the helpdesk and I was told that i'm obliged to change the eeprom if I want to use the previous firmware.

Sorry for slow reply

(1) We are using gfi faxmaker
(2) The previous firmware worked and the new one doesn't
(3) we have a small technical problem with the workaround to print the tiff to the faxmaker printer driver on the fax server
(4)i meant to check the tiff type last night but ran out of time cos I had to run for a plane with 30 mins to spare! Back in that office sunday / monday, unless I can get someone else to check it in the meantime. But the file is way too large to be a fax tiff I think.

I did some more research to see if there was any firmware or DSS based glitch and found nothing specific. I have not installed GFI for some time and may need to do that to see what the issue is. I looked at the scans and the file attributes and found nothing to compare between the 9250C and 9200C that I could detect.

Here is the data with product and firmware releases using letter size samples:

9200C and 9250C DSS 4.10 LanFax Tests

DSS Setting Output DPI Print size

9250C with CPE 02

GFI-Faxmaker 200x200 G4 MTIFF 8.32 x 10.81
Generic Vendor 200x200 G4 MTIFF 8.32 x 10.72
Generic Vendor 300x300 G4 MTIFF (super-fine) 8.32 x 10.72

9200C with CPE 05

RightFax 200x200 G4 MTIFF 8.64 x 10.86

9100C with CPE 05 and NSS 2.0

FAXMaker 200 x 200 G4 MTIFF 8.50 x 11.0

Even the 9100C made the same TIFF as the 9200C and 9250C did, only the 9100C locks the print area to even amounts. Whatever the issue is it is either very minor or does not affect all 9250C's running the second firmware revision with DSS and GFI LanFax.

You may need to call HP and give them a sample image to work with.

Hi Kevin

Sorry for the very long delay in replying

With the new firmware, if I scan a blank page and open the tiff with photoshop, it says compression: 4 and bits per sample: 8. If I look at tiff files from the old firmware, they say compression: 3 and bits per sample: 1. I'm afraid I'm not an expert on what this all means!

Additionally, the file size is enormously greater: a single blank page on the new firmware is a 3 meg tiff, whereas on the old firmware it was more like 30K by the look of it.

I didn't report a case to HP yet because we have a workaround, but I would like to get this fixed.

Hi to all,
I had the same problem fixed by installing IrfanView as Steve reported.
HP Digital Sender 9250c has 48.041.0 firmware version installed.
All works correctly If I send a small number of fax pages (2 or 3).
If I try to send a fax with 7 or 8 pages, GFI sends only the first two pages and I receive a report about success notification.
I have also verify IIS SMTP Virtual Server's settings and Exchange's settings as indicated on KBID002715 GFI article .
Other HP 9200c work correctly and they produce a smaller .TIF file than HP 9250c does.

Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for your co-operation.

Maurizio.

I have been promised that the fix is due in the April release. In the meantime, we told all users to restart the machine each time they send a fax.

Printing the wrong-format-tiff through Irfanview works but produces poor quality results.

I have 3x 9250c Digital Senders that I am trying to configure to work with FAXmaker 14.2. However, the TIF file appears to be generating a GFI 1701 Document Conversion error.

I tried to use the irfanview without success...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
