My screen flickers badly after usually about 5-10 minutes of turning the machine on, althought sometimes it can take up to an hour to start flickering.
It's not the software- I did a clean reinstall with the disks provided with the laptop. (Flickering was occuring during the installation- running off of the CD)
I've run BIOS several times- no errors/defects
I went into the advanced BIOS and ran every test separately- no errors/defects
I re-seated the RAM- no improvement
I replaced the RAM- no inprovement
I notice that I can stop the flickering by opening the screen to a greater angle, i.e. increasing the degrees of the angle between the screen and the keyboard. This really seems to stop the flickering but then I can't see the screen too well- usually the glare is very bad off of the screen and the angle of view is harsh.
Is this a connection problem b/w the laptop and the screen? If so why does it occur sporatically? Also, the moments that the hard disk spins coincide with the flickering, which seems to indicate that the flickering is more than just a loose connection.
Please help.
One last thing- my battery goes from 100% to dead in about 5 minutes. I know of someone else with a Xe3 that has the same problem- Is there a fix?
Thank you for your time.

It sounds like the cable connecting the LCD to the video PCA (on the notebook) is loose or needs to be replaced. If the unit is still under warranty call an HP Customer Care Center.
For the battery, you may want to try recalibrating it. Upon bootup (when the HP logo is displayed), press F6 to run the battery learning utility. The process will take approximately four hours to complete. Make sure the notebook is connected to AC. If hitting F6 doesn't produce the learning program, you may need to update the notebook to the latest BIOS revision. http://www.hp.com/cposupport/software.html
I have exactly the same problem, except mine may have something to do with how my laptop is set up: i've replaced the hardrive to 20gigs a several months back, partitioned it to 3 drives and triple booted it to Win98, Win2000, and WinXP. Now the flickering is just intermittent and a bit bearable except when i use it to watch DVDs for long time...
Now it's down to a battery problem - even on AC power, it just charges up to only 2%, I've read about the F6 battery calibration test, but everytime i try it, my laptop just conks out and doesnt power up anymore...until i unplug the AC and start over again...
Question: with a triple boot system, does the bios upgrade have something to do with it? which bios set up should i run?
As for the flickering, it could well be the connection from the M/B to Display. The pins on the M/B connector and the pins on the connector itself may be dry. When you change your viewing angle, the cable streches slightly causing drag, which could tighten the grip and, walla, no more flicker.
Solution: for starters, you may have to remove this connector and reseat it, a couple times or clean the pins manualy with a sharp object, so that the pins get cleaned. But strictly, this is a job for an expert. The M/B should be blown/dry after this job to get rid of any residue/particles fallen to it. Also check for broken wires at the pins. Also the problem could be with the GPU itself.
As for the battery, If you are regular user like me, That is to say use your Xe3 every day at an average duration of 8 to 16 hours, doing workloads using applications such as graphics creation, video editing, Webwork, using communication equipment, for a one year or more, your battery is close to expiration.
Solution: You will have to diasable all power saving features on the operating system and BIOS, to get a little more than three hours or so if you are lucky. But getting a new battery would be the best thing.
my battery would display 100% then die mysteriously sometimes 10 minutes later or 2 hours later. Then suddenly out of the blue my laptop would not power up with my power cable. I tested the power cable, worked just fine. My battery would last about 30 minutes. My battery would charge. Soon after the next boot, every 5 seconds my screen would flicker, battery would not charge while the laptop was running. My battery was bad and was shorting the AC power plugged into it. I removed the battery and it works fine. Now i must buy a 160 dollar battery :).
I lived with the same screen flicker problem on my XE3-GC for over a year. Finally somebody suggested that it was the power inverter that needed to be replaced. I order a new inverter from HP ($35.00 CDN) and installed it and have had no flicker since then. I was a little worried about opening the bezel around the LCD, but after biting the bullet and doing it, the procedure was neither difficult nor damaging to my laptop. By the way, the part number for the inverter is F2330-60926.
Hi there! My display flickers, too. I opened the notebook and found out that the display cable is broken. Does anyone know where to get that cable? A dealer told me that HP does not sell this cable. How did you guys solve your problems concerning the display? Looking foward to your answers! Best wishes, Christoph
