I'm commissioning a new machine to function as a fileserver and to backup files.

It's basically an Athlon mobo/CPU with a Realtek network card, an Adaptect AHA-2910C SCSI adapter, and Creative Labs GeForce 256 graphics card, with 180Gig of HD space. Nothing special, really. I've installed Windows 2000 Server on it, and not much else, yet. It'll get a 1Gbps ethernet card in it eventually, but I have to get the tape backup working first, as that's most important.

The Adaptec drivers installed without any problems, but after I had connected the DAT40 drive, the machine locks up either during boot or shortly afterwards.

I've tried changing the SCSI ID, but that doesn't make any difference.

Has anyone encountered this before with an Adaptec SCSI adapter?

Hi Msquared,
the DAT40 is an LVD/SE drive. Your SCSI Card do not support LVD protocol.
Following the adaptec link:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppdetail.html?prodkey=AHA-2910C

Second step, after you change the scsi board, please remember you need an SCSI Terminator onto the DAT40 (68-pin LVD terminator for DAT Prod Code: C6368A, C6369A, C6370A, and C6371A)
use the HP Code C2364A.

Bye
