I have searched the forums and tech docs this morning and read all previous postings for this issue. I was wondering if anyone has solved this problem. We are printing from W98 SE over a SBS 4.5 network to HP Laser printers..4V, 4L, 4PLUS and are intermittently receiving this error.

Any new ideas greatly appreciated with points...

Additional question - I went and downloaded the latest drivers, which I assume are the same ones I have since they haven't been updated since 07/01/2000.

The file was hplj4_ps_en.exe, and I unzippoed it into the default directory; c:\hp_win2k\lj4\ps\.

When I go into the directory:
C:\hp_win2k\lj4\ps\Win9x
there is no executable file...what am I missing?

Thanks...RD

I deleted the printers and readded them. Then I changed the spool data format to raw from EMF and ran the process streams 6-7 times from each client w/no problems. Hopefully, that solves it...

I too have had a rash of 30 cases in different states in my company of this problem over the last 3 weeks. Mostly HP 4050's and 2100's. A few 5p's and various others. I've found that replacing the 6L drivers with 5e drivers on the 4050's solved their issue. Reinstalling drivers fixed some others and nothing short of reimaging the machine fixed a couple others. I'm still plagued by this issue and don't know where to go from here. Just thought I'd chime in case HP has any thoughts.

My agency has also been receiving a rash of these errors for quite a while. The majority of errors are with LJ 2100 and 4050's but we also get them occasionally with other printers (LJ4, LJ 6p, LJ4100, LJ2200). Most of the problems are with our W98SE machines. We have tried everything we can think of.

Our most common error is 'Spool32 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 017f:bff7b9a6 or 0187:bff7b9a6' Once in a while it's a different memory address.

We've removed and reinstalled the LPT port in device manager, tried the latest and also older printer drivers, tried PCL 5e and 6, tried using older model printer drivers for compatible newer model printers, changed the spool data format from EMF to RAW and back again, disabled bi-directional printing in the printer properties, made sure there were no temp files on the PCs in question, ran scandisk, defrag, tried adding a shortcut to spool32.exe in the startup folder (idea from another forum). We also tried disabling everything that was not absolutely necessary in the startup tab under 'msconfig' and tried disabling autoexec and config (they were usually empty anyway). None of these have worked very well.

The only thing that does help is to change the setting to print directly to printer. That is not a good option since the user can't use their PC until the print job is done.

We have also had a Dell system engineer come out and try to troubleshoot it for us (all our desktop systems are Dell) and they could not find the problem either.

If anyone has found anything that works well (besides re-imaging the PCs) I'd love to hear about it.

Hi,

You might check the following document for suggestions in solving "spool32" errors:

Hope it helps!

Kathy-

I already tried everything in the article that you mention in your message. That was the first thing we did. None of the 'fixes' worked except printing directly to printer which is really not an option since it locks up the PC until the print job is done.

Do you have any other ideas? Does the fact that the memory address in the error is always the same on a particular PC mean anything?

Hi Pam,

Since you've tried multiple drivers, I don't think this is a driver issue. Can you establish any pattern to the error? What software package does it occur in?

Thanks!

The applications they are printing from when they receive the spool32 error are:
Word 97, Access 97, Excel 97, Eudora 4.2.2, Netscape Navigator.

Sometimes they have multiple applications open, sometimes only the one they are printing from. The majority of the people (about 90%) did not receive spool32 errosr on a regular basis until they got a new printer. The new printers that the errors came with are mainly the LJ 2100 and LJ 4050. Whenever they get an error they completely shut down and restart their PCs. I have them powering off the printers at night because turning off the printer seemed to lessen the quantity of errors for a few people. Most of the printers have extra kingston memory modules installed but we have tried removing the extra memory and the errors still come.

We are also having the same problems with both the LJ4 and the LJ2100 series. I have done everything that Microsoft has suggested and everything that HP has suggested and we are still having the problems.

Something else that happens to us that no one has mentioned is that it totally removes all the printers under the printers folder and will not let you add new ones as it says the printer is not online. If you log off the operating system and log back in all the printers come back. You do not need to even reboot.

I have done everything short of reinstalling the operating systems. I have also replaced key files, updated the drivers, loaded the spool32 in my win.ini when the system starts, changed to Raw... still same problem on two machines. It started on one machine and then the other a week later. We have the latest virus scanning software and Dat files and the systems are clean.

I am starting to see a patern when searching for this problem through different sites that it is with the HPlj4 and HP2100 printers that are recently having this problem and so far it has been unsolvable. Other HP models have had this problem but they were fixed with the suggestions. Other printer companies have had this problem and there is no repeat posts since the fixes seem to be working however the lj4 and 2100 printers have people writing back after trying everything and are still having the problem....

Thanks for the attachment. I've actually tried all those solutions and none of them have solved the problem. The only solution we haven't been able to test is disabling the antivirus for long periods of time because our antivirus protection is more critical than the ability to print.

Regarding the previous message, we also have been experiencing the printers disappearing from the printers folder. I don't know if logging off and on would have solved the problem, we have always rebooted to be safe. Are you also running Windows 95/98 on your systems with problems?

I'm hearing talk about updateing to the latest version of the printer driver for the 2100 and /or lj4k's to solve this but I have had very good luck with just using the old reliable LJ4 driver for ALL my hp printers. Actually for all my printers period. I name them as what ever they are and just change the driver to the LaserJet 4. The minor issues of tray selection or whatever are easy to work around, and the driver... just... works!

Is anyone else looking at the possibility that this is related to antivirus software? It's very hard to be sure (because we can't, it seems, get the fault in an easily replicable state) but it looks like this only became a common problem in my institution when we upgraded McAfee from 4.0.2 to 4.5.1. Certainly there is discussion on the McAfee boards which seems to suggest that people think this is a McAfee issue. It would be interesting, for example, to know whether other people reporting the problem are also on McAfee 4.5.x?

We use TrendMicro anti-virus software, and aren't having the problem. We originally started having the problem when we installed Infinium software. As I mentioned in an earlier response; after I deleted the printers, readded them, and changed the spool data format to raw from EMF the problem went away.

1. A question - is anyone getting this on Win2K, NT, or XP? Or does it only happen on 95/98? Our experience is starting to suggest that NT-like OSs are immune.

2. Over on the McAfee message boards, people are talking about replacing the win 9x spoolss.dll with that from ME. Some claim that this works and others have had no luck (another of those situations where it makes you worry that there is perhaps more than one problem presenting simultaneously!). I'd feel VERY nervous about trying such an apparently bizarre fix. Any comment please?

Regarding Windows NT, 2K and XP - We don't run any workstations with NT or XP. We are just starting to migrate to Win2K and of the 6 machines that are in use with Win2K, we are not experiencing any spool32 errors. Only two of these original people were experiencing the errors with their Win98SE machines. So things *are* looking very hopeful in Win2K although I'm not claiming victory yet.

Personally, I don't think I'd try that XP file substitution. It seems a little dangerous to me.

In regards to deleting, readding and changing the format to raw, we have tried that and it didn't work. Neither did using LJ4 drivers.

We have been getting spool32 errors on 6 x W98se PC's printing to a Lj4 and a Lj5 since installing Mcafee antivirus 4.5.1. Evidence would seem to point very firmly at the antivirus because when it is disabled the spool32 errors stop.

I have tried all the various things suggested in this article but to no avail. I have now followed Network Associates advice and replaced the spoolss.dll with another of the same name from a Windows ME machine, and so far, fingers crossed, everything is fine. I'll update this message should anymore errors occur.

On our 4050 that was giving us _very_ frequent Spool32 errors, we rolled the driver back to a LaserJet 4+ (the one that comes with Windows) as suggested by someone earlier in this thread. This has _drastically_ reduced the occurance of the errors - in fact 10 entire days have gone by without a problem which is unprecedented since the installation of the 4050 months ago.

We are running W98SE along with NAV 5.0.

A user is having these problems also. Tried almost everything. Even reinstalled everything nothing has worked. I just disabled the antivirus software (InoculateIT) to see if the pc stops getting the errors. I am using the hp laserjet 4 drivers with an hp laserjet 5. Tried the raster printing setting also. If it is the virus software you can stop the software from checking the c:\windows\spool directory in NAV. In InoculateIT you have to exclude files with extension *.spl and *.shd. It is a very frustrating situation for the technician and the user.

Just thinking, if you are using Antivirus software...

For some people, if they print directly to the printer the errors stop. One person said that if they stopped the antivirus software the spool32 errors stopped. Thus the problem must be when the files are created in the spool directory of the pc. There must be a timing issue between the antivirus software checking the files and the windows printing mechanism trying to print the files.

McAfee VirusScan also appears to cause regular problems with the Canon drivers for the BJC 7000 - these problems stopped when the background scanning was cancelled from McAfee's... The problem is more regular if background printing is in use, and the user switches from one application to another, or even within worksheets in Lotus 123... basically anything that involved the machine going to the windows swap file, whilst virus scanning was on & printing was in progress...

Just wanted to second Neville's feelings on the McAfee AntiVirus upgrade from 4.01 to 4.51 causing the issue. At our institution we have all different groups of OS's and we recently upgraded. This has not caused an issue for groups on NT or Win2k, but users on Win 98 are experiencing the problem intermittently but enough to make it a serious issue here. We too have tried everything we can find but nothing seems to work except completely removing anti-virus, which is definitely not an option.

As a sidenote: We have also had many problems with users accessing print previews for reports in an Oracle client product.

I will definitley be trying those dll ideas!

we use NAV on Win95 OSR2, 98, 98SE, and 2K. No such spool32 errors.

Actually, we used to get them only with postscript drivers, and the usual solutions (raw format and turn of bi-direct) fixed them.

Our organization is experiencing all of problems listed in this thread. Printers disappearing and reappearing on reboot, tons of spool32 errors. It has all been since we upgraded to McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1. I've tried updating printer drivers, spoolss.dll, etc. The only sure thing that works is disabling the virus scanner. I haven't seen any mention of using the WinMe spoolss.dll on Win95 (I see people have been using it on 98), I'm planning on trying it since nothing else has worked.

Just reporting back on my attempt with the Me spool file (windows 98)

We replaced the spoolss.dll at the end of September on two PCs. Neither of the users have gotten any of the usual spool32 errors since the file was replaced. One user received a different spool error (only once) which I've decided was a fluke. So, so far, so good!

I have not been totally folowing this thread, but we had the same problem on our network workstations. The solution was quite easy but pointed directly to the HP manufacture drivers for the lj5. I appoligise if this solution has already been tried but I thought I should put it out for others to see.

Our solution,
Reimage (ghost) the harddrive to a time before the HP manufacture (LJ5) drivers were installed.
Install the Microsoft version of the LJ4 drivers (included with Win98 distrubution), then turn spooling file format from EMF to RAW.

Weighing in here after a LONG discussion, but we had numerous SPOOL32 errors when we one of my clients first got an HP 4050 (about 18 months ago). In discussions with HP tech support, they suggested using the HP LJ 4+ driver.

This worked very well ... that is, until we upgraded to McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1. Now the problem has come back, but on just a couple of machines.

I have found that some of the machines, being Dell's, have a DOS emulation driver for the sound card (Creative Labs) which uses IRQ 7 (the same IRQ the parallel port uses!!!). I disabled this DOS emulation driver (in the Device Manager) and the SPOOL32 problem went away for about a week.

It has just re-reared it's ugly head, so ...
I'm planning on implementing the spooler adjustments and see if that helps.

We've had persistent problems with SPOOL32 errors since moving to McAfee 4.5.1, mostly on older machines (<200MHz, Win95). One fix that does seem to work is to add the C:\WINDOWS\SPOOL folder to the Exclusions list in McAfee to prevent it scanning the spool files as they are created.
David G. Wilson
Nov 1, 2001 19:17:50 GMT 3 pts

Yes, I was contemplating adding all the following to the MVS exclusion list:
C:\Windows\Spool {folder}
C:\Windows\System\Spool {folder}
C:\Windows\System\SPOOLSS.DLL
C:\Windows\System\WINSPOOL.DRV
C:\Windows\System\SPOOL32.EXE

Any comments?

We have gotten this MANY times already in the past 3 weeks. It ALL had to do with McAfee Virus Software. So far we have noticed that the downloadable WEB version is the most problematic. We have also encountered it in the Retail version 6. They are not doing to well in our book right now.

I have dealt with this error for many years, in most all cases, I have resolved the problem or at least minimized it by only using the Oringinal HP Laser Jet 4 drivers. Do not use the 4M, 4V, or 4Plus. When I have used these drivers instead of the drivers that came with the printer, it has resolved the problem.
I had even downloaded "current" drivers for the newer printers, the SPOOL32 error continued until I deleted, this part is important, you will not see a change in the problem unless you delete the drivers that came with your printer. If you simply leave the drivers on your machine, and install the HP Laserjet 4 drivers, you will still have a problem. You have to remove the other laser printer drivers.
MCafee has continued to be a cause of many unusual issues with Computers, along with printing, however I can tell you Norton also has issues to.
I have found loading the HP Laserjet 4 drivers usually takes care of this problem 99% of the time.
As always, there are many things that contribute to the problem. I will concur with the statement that Windows 2000 does seem to do very well with the printing. I still however use the HP Laserjet 4 driver even with this operating system.

I agree with Daryll on what works. We have replaced the spoolss.dll file (with the Windows ME version) on 8 windows 98 systems and they have received NO spool32 errors since the file was replaced.

FYI - I did try the file replacement on 1 windows 95 system and completely killed the ability to print. I'm not trying it on any more Windows 95 systems.

Hello,

We have started having these printing issues since upgrading to virusscan 4.5.1, but i'm noticing that the problems only happen when the user prints from a 16-bit program. None of the other machines are having this problem, even though they all have 4.5.1. Are any of you running a 16-bit program, along with virusscan 4.5.1?

My 2 Cents. This forum is a welcomed relief for a tech worn down by this exact (to the address) problem.

I have tried and seen everything mentioned in this forum. From lost printers after the error to spool errors after printing across the network. I have reloaded printer drivers, ran SFC, changed the spool data format to RAW, reloaded primary application, etc.

(Thank you I'm not losing my mind and its not the worlds best but second place word processor).

My common configuration is win98 and Norton Antivirus with most error messages coming from Corel WordPerfect (legal secretaries live in WP). We support many law firms and I believe all are using "shared" HP Laser Printers. I will try the most interesting solutions (spoolss.dll from ME and removing the spool directory from scans by Norton (if this is possible)

I hope to report back my success/failure after the new year so that this error can once and for all be eliminated.

Thanks

It's amazing that this thread is still generating so much activity.

I thought this was a SOLVED issue. Neville Young mentioned the solution way back in September 17th & Trevor Mills confirmed it a few days later.

For those of you who missed it, this is the ***ONLY*** solution that works!

From McAfee's (Network Assoiciate's) KnowledgeBase:

SolutionID: nai13332
Problem Description: Error: "Spool32.exe has cause an invalid page fault" After installing VirusScan 4.5x, error occurs when printing and printers disappear from Printer folder.

Problem Environment:
McAfee VirusScan 4.5.x
Microsoft Windows 9x

Solution:
Windows 95
Update the SPOOLSS.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory. For Windows 95 the original version should be 4.00.950, it should be replaced with 4.03.1212 or higher. This file is available from Microsoft support and is also included with later releases of Windows 95. You may have this file on another Windows 95 system. Check the file version of the SPOOLSS.DLL file by right clicking on it, select properties and then selecting the version tab.

Windows 98
Update the SPOOLSS.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory. Microsoft has not released an updated DLL for Windows 98. However we (Network Associates) have tested the SPOOLSS.DLL file from Windows Millennium Edition (version 4.90.0.3000) on Windows 98 (and 98SE) and found that is file not only functions properly but also resolves nearly all Spool32 invalid page fault errors.
David G. Wilson
Dec 22, 2001 04:21:30 GMT 0 pts

BTW, the easiest way to update the SPOOLSS.DLL on a Win98 box is to use the System File Checker.
Start-Run-SFC-OK
Select Extract one file from disk
Type SPOOLSS.DLL in the filename box-click Start
In the Restore from box type the location of the SPOOLSS.DLL that you've extracted from WinME or the path to the WinME cabinet files themselves-<CD-ROM>:\Win9x (SFC will extract it for you with just the location of the Cab file! Cool! - It's actually in Win_15.Cab) [Did you know that WinZip 8.x can read & extract Cab files!!!]
The Save file in box should say C:\Windows\System
(If you have installed Windows in a different folder than C:\Windows then replace that part of the path name with your folder.)
This will prompt you to backup the old file (a good thing to do!) to the C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC folder, then prompt to reboot the machine.
Everything should be printing up rosey after that! NO MORE SPOOL32 ERRORS!!!!! YEAH!!!!

P.S. If you can't get your hands on a WinME disk, let me know and I'll send the file to you. I might get in trouble if I post it to the message board! Not sure, but ...

I've been fulfilling all these requests for the SPOOLSS.DLL from WinME. Glad to help!

But, Bill K., yours bounced. Something about needing 505 Authentication.

Maybe the file needs to have a .ZIP extension to get past your antivirus programs as with a previous person in this list.

Let me know what to do different and I'll try again.

I'm trying to attach the file to this message since the one attached earlier by another does not seem to be downloadable.

SPOOL32 ERROR RESOLUTION !! !!

I resolved this problem with older laser printers by adjusting the amount of memory in the driver properties to correspond with the amount of memory installed in the laser printer.

Here???s How:

1.) Print a test page on the laser printer you are working with

2.) Look at that test page for the amount of memory installed

3.) Adjust your printer driver accordingly. If this is a network setup, you will need to do this on all networked machines individually that print to that printer.

Back in the old days when laser printers were expensive and memory upgrades were also expensive, they didn???t come with much built in memory. As you know, a laser must build the image in memory before it???s printed and for many large companies this standard amount wasn???t enough so they would upgrade to 5-10Meg or so. The printer driver is usually set to the default to the standard amount supplied by the vendor (this is usually 1 ??? 2 meg)

As time goes on computers were replaced but the laser printers weren???t???the drivers also default to that standard amount of built-in memory. If the driver is thinking it only has 1 Meg of ram to work with ??? that???s just not enough for most documents today, especially if graphics are involved.

Back in the Windows 3.1 days you???ll remember receiving the ???Out of Memory??? messages???now days it???s Spool32.

Glad to help??? don???t miss my virus removal help pages at http://www.antivirusebook.com/database?hp they???ll save you time and headaches dealing with them.

I've been experiencing all of the above mentions symptoms for about a couple of weeks now. Interestingly enough, it did correspond to a McAfee Anti-Virus rollout to all my Win98 PC's. However, instead of McAfee regular, whatever the current rev is today, I'm using ASAP, which is managed via the internet. I've been trying to find out how this product compares to the standard McAfee product but to no avail.
In any case, I've replaced the spoolss.dll on a couple of PC's to see what happens. I'll repost with any results.

David - If this works you are truly my hero!!

Is it okay to simply rename the original file and copy over the new one? I know sometimes 'links' will go with the file itself, rather than the name.

I've changed one of the pc's(starting out slowly) but didn't want to destroy the original file in case of problems so renamed it to oldspoolss.dll and copied over the new one.

Is this enough or do I need to approach it differently?

Yes, you can just rename and copy the file, but you will have to do it by rebooting to a command prompt. The file will have an "In Use" lock on it if Windows is running.

The easiest way to update the SPOOLSS.DLL on a Win98 box (DO NOT USE THIS FILE WITH WIN95!) is to use the System File Checker.
Start-Run-SFC-OK
Select Extract one file from disk
Type SPOOLSS.DLL in the filename box-click Start
In the Restore from box type the location of the SPOOLSS.DLL that you've extracted from the zip.
YEAH!!!!

The engineer in me still wants to know the cause of this problem!!

I am delighted to have been referred to this thread from WPUniverse forums, and will try substituting the WinME spoolss.dll in my Win98SE OS, having done all the other things recommended by Microsoft and HP for this error with no success. But, I still want to know what the **** causes this, particularly since it started seemingly with no triggering alteration in my system?

For 2 years now, I have had a 2100m running with Win98SE and WPWIN8 SP7, my virus scanner is and has been neither McAfee nor Norton, and I made no major change in any of these, when suddenly the Spool32 errors commenced with all printers disappearing, etc. Printing from Word 2000, Outlook 2000 etc cause no problems, only WPWIN 8. The only changes made were routine changes in page setup and paper tray selection when printing from WPWin98. Updating the 2100m drivers did not solve it, as others here have found. That just spawned SPOOL32 errors in COMCTL32.dll.

So HP technicians, what gives?
David G. Wilson
Mar 10, 2002 21:07:38 GMT 5 pts

Well, I'm no engineer (except an MCSE), but this is what I've deduced about this problem.

It is definitely tied to spooler timing.

McAfee VirusScan and Norton Antivirus have both revealed this problem. I would suspect other virus scanners might also. I suspect these two, with MVS more so, because of the thoroughness (or time taken) of the scans.

It also shows up when HP JetDirect cards are used for networked HP printers using newer printer drivers (e.g. PCL-5, PCL-6, etc.). I suspect because of the sync activity between client & print server software.

It appears that MVS or JD can delay a print job long enough to make the spooler give up and generate an error message.

Network throughput and protocols can also have an influence. It is a very complicated and pervasive problem. There have been several websites devoted entirely to this problem.

It is hard to believe that Micro$oft has never tried to update the Win98 spooler to address this problem. But, now that we've discovered the WinME spooler fixes it, that is all moot!

Hi Richard,

The trick that worked for me was to replace the spoolss.dll file for the one that comes with Windows ME.

!!!DO NOT USE THIS WITH WINDOWS 95!!!

The easiest way to update the SPOOLSS.DLL on a Win98 box is to use the
System File Checker.
Start-Run-SFC-OK
Select Extract one file from disk
Type SPOOLSS.DLL in the filename box-click Start
In the Restore from box type the location of the SPOOLSS.DLL that you've
extracted from WinME or the path to the WinME cabinet files
themselves-<CD-ROM>:\Win9x (SFC will extract it for you with just the
location of the Cab file! Cool! - It's actually in Win_15.Cab) [Did you know
that WinZip 8.x can read & extract Cab files!!!]
The Save file in box should say C:\Windows\System
(If you have installed Windows in a different folder than C:\Windows then
replace that part of the path name with your folder.)
This will prompt you to backup the old file (a good thing to do!) to the
C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC folder, then prompt to reboot the machine.

Good luck,
Jo

Tom,

You will not be able to see system files like .DLLs unless you reconfigure the Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) to show them.

Just open the Windows Explorer (the fastest way I've found is to hold down the Flying Window logo key & tap the E key {always wondered what that little key was for? See "Microsoft Natural keyboard shortcuts in the Windows help}.
Click on Tools-File Options-View
Click to put a check mark in the Display the full path in title bar option.
Click to put a dot in the Show all files under the Hidden files option.
Click to remove the check mark in the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
Click OK to accept the changes.
You will find the Windows Explorer much more useful with
these options set this way. It is also more dangerous if a user is apt to "willy-nilly" delete files, so be careful!

Here's to NO MORE SPOOL32 ERRORS!!!

I too have been sufering from "SPOOL32 caused an invalid page fault???" since McAfee AV software was installed, and I'm grateful to every one in this thread for their advice.

In my case the problem seems to be exclusive to printing to the HP2100 from Microsoft Word - there were no problems with IE6, Adobe Acrobat or Adobe PageMaker.

I shall try out the WinME spooler DLL and make sure McAfee does not scan the spooler files.

Incidently, this problem has been identified by Sophos Anti-Virus, and they suggest excluding the files *.SHD from the anti-vrus scan. See: http://www.riverbank.co.uk/support/R1116.html

The C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS folder should always be empty except while printing so if you ever find anything there and a print job is not currently being sent, then you should delete it.

Most of the tech community consider this to be a "solved" issue and have therefore moved on.
I continue to monitor this forum because we're continuing to get a couple of requests a month. That is nothing like the hundreds a day we were getting a couple of years ago.
There are a few others sites even in other languages. Just go to a "good" search engine like dogpile.com or metacrawler.com and look for spool32.
As a matter of fact, you can find dozens of threads in just the HP forums on this problem, but, as I said, most are pretty old.

I have over 50 98se clients to distribute the spoolss.dll file too and was wondering if anyone has managed to send it out through a logon script? Unfortunatly I do not know VB and work only with batch file scripts. Normally I would just put in a command to copy from the netlogon folder to c:\windows\system and use the /y to overwrite the existing file....but I get a sharing violation error when I try it because the spoolss.dll file is in use by windows right from startup...
David G. Wilson
Dec 6, 2002 21:05:50 GMT 3 pts

Dana,

You cannot replace the file while Windows is running except through a utility like System File Check (SFC.EXE) because, as you say, the file initialize by Windows as soon as it starts and you will be an "access violation" error.

Because this utility (SFC) can replace the file, I would assume that a VB script could do it since VB can manipulate file access rights.

Another route might be to use the SFC utiltiy through a keystroke script.
Wilson Window Ware (no relation) has a product called WinBatch that should do the job. They even have a 30 trial version that may let you get this change done for FREE!

David,

I downloaded the program you mentioned and took a look at it. It seems to be a form of VB in and of itself. I have been meaning for years now to teach myself VB and be done with it, so I guess now is as good as a time as any!

On another note: I had added a line to my batch logon scripts to copy the spoolss.dll file to my 98 clients before posting my original message about getting the sharing violation error. Well, I never deleted that line from the script and low and behold every single machine in my school lab of 20 computers except one had the newer ME spoolss.dll file after 4 days of re-starts and people logging on and off of the computers. It seems that either windows unloads spoolss.dll after a while of inactivity allowing the file to be copied over upon logging on as a different user, or once in a while during a cold boot the script is executed faster than windows loads all of its libraries. I sat and watched the logon scripts run on each of the 20 clients in my lab and some had a successful file copy on a cold boot while others had a successful file copy from log off, the system sitting idle overnight waiting to log on to an NT domain, then being logged on again after a few hours. I need to go to each classroom in the school and see how many other 98 machines this has worked for....Interesting none the less....

Hi everyone,

I was having this same problem. I am the network admin for a mixed windows environment and working with novell servers. I solved this issue with a Windows 98 machine by reinstalling the network printer. I browsed to find the server with the printer and then found the printer. I had installed it using the Novell Directory Services. It would still print but would occasionally cause the Spool32 error to pop up. I haven't had a problem since.

hey everybody.. thanks to all for your input.. i just found this thread and i am sooo excited. my spool32 problems are not widespread but certainly disconcerting. I thought that our problems were related to setting up printing using the standard hp tcpip port rather than to a novell queue. We are using McAfee 4.51 pretty much across the board but the change to McAfee 4.51 didnt cause the spool32 problem on all pc's. I have been setting up the printers so that the jobs print directly to the printer instead of to the spool.. and this works but i dont like it as a resolution.. so i will be trying your other suggestions.

Yes, I discovered the Windows Update bug in using the WinME SPOOLSS.DLL in Win98 a couple of weeks ago. (Don't you just LOVE Micro$oft?!?!)

We have noticed that the IE crash only occurs if you try to manually go to the Windows Update site. If you are taken there because of a Critical Update notification, it seems to work correctly. Weird, huh?

One work-around I've found is to restore the SPOOLSS.DLL (you did let SFC.EXE save it in the C:\Windows\helpdesk\SFC folder, didn't you?) Then do the update and then swap the SPOOLSS.DLL file again. A lot of trouble, but it works.

Let us know!

Where do I get the spoolss.dll from ME?

Thanks to Mr. Wilson for monitoring this thread and providing help. I could really use "spoolss.dll" v.4.9 from Windows ME to take care of "spool32.exe" errors. (In addition to our newer HP and Dell machines using Windows2000, we still have several older units running Window98 and Novell with various B&W and color LaserJets) We went from Win 98 to Win 2000 (which has spoolss.dll v.5.0), so we don't have Win ME from which to get version 4.9. Can you please E-mail it to me?

THANKS

You can download the required WinME SPOOLSS.DLL file from my post of March 05, 2002 05:04 AM GMT above which also has installation instructions.

Just think of it! A world without Spool32 errors! Very cool!

Sorry, Jim, but this forum won't allow the downlaod of .DLL's.
You have to ZIP all uploaded files first before they can be downloaded from forum.
It is kinda weird that you can upload any file type, but once there only the .ZIPs can be downloaded by the forum participants.

Message for David Wilson.
David,
I too have the demonstrated Win98Update bug using the spoolss.dll from WinME. Am I to understand that each and every time that I wish to do an Update that I will have to swap back to Win98 spoolss.dll and then swap back to WinME spoolss.dll when done. I know you don't own the problem but would you agree that this is insane? I thought I was out of the Spool32 errors when you so kindly posted the fix.

Sorry,
Here is the spoolss.dll file zipped. Also, I have included the winspool.drv file in the zipped file for windows ME that resolved the windows update problem . You must boot to DOS then replace the files.

Kim,

That was my experience. I did notice that it only effected the manual updates. When an update was initiated by a Critical Update Notification, the update process worked fine. Weird, huh?
See my post above of February 16, 2003 04:46 AM GMT

But it appears that Jim has found that updating Win98 with the WINSPOOL.DRV file from WinME as well as the SPOOLSS.DLL solves the Windows Update problem that crashes Internet Explorer.

You cannot replace the file while Windows is running except by booting to DOS (like Jim mentions above) or through a utility like System File Check (SFC.EXE) because the file is initialize by Windows as soon as it starts and you will get an "access violation" error.

The easiest way to update the WINSPOOL.DRV & the SPOOLSS.DLL on a Win98 box is to use the
System File Checker.
Start-Run-SFC-OK
Select Extract one file from disk
Type WINSPOOL.DRV in the filename box-click Start
In the Restore from box type the location of the WINSPOOL.DRV that you've
extracted from WinME or the path to the WinME cabinet files
themselves-<CD-ROM>:\Win9x (SFC will extract it for you with just the
location of the Cab file! Cool! - It's actually in Win_16.Cab & Win_15.Cab for SPOOLSS.DLL) [Did you know
that WinZip 8.x can read & extract Cab files!!!]
The Save file in box should say C:\Windows\System
(If you have installed Windows in a different folder than C:\Windows then
replace that part of the path name with your folder.)
This will prompt you to backup the old file (a good thing to do!) to the
C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC folder, you will then be prompted to reboot the machine.
Respond to this prompt with No.

Now go through the same process for the SPOOLSS.DLL, then Restart and you're good to go!
NO MORE SPOOL32 ERRORS!!!!! YEAH!!!!

I have also experienced the above problems with spool32 in kernel32.dll. I had previously believed the problem related to Novell client. I want to thank you all for your discussion relating to the problem.

I have installed the spooss.dll from WinME and found the printer now works but as you say, the manual windows update at the Microsoft site stalls at 66%. To avoid going through DOS, renaming the spool32 file updating and getting the WinME spoolss.dll again, I downloaded the "BigFix" program. It is free rom Big Fix and looks for updates for your system. The program loads when you start up your system and runs in the background. I like it because it asks you if you want to install an upgrade or patch (and you can refuse updates you don't want). The upgrades are directly from the software companies (MS, ATI, etc.). It installs the patches directly from Microsoft site with no problems.

I use tweakui or msconfig to disable BigFix if I don't want it running.

Free Bigfix is available "download BigFix client" at

http://help.bigfix.com/

Free MS Tweakui V1.33 is available from CNET

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the spool directory...

Yeah, I am fighting this beast now. I volunteered to "look at" a friend's computer, which had other problems that were easy to resolve. This one, however...

I've searched the 'net and read every post on the subject in this forum. And I've tried nearly everything, to no avail. I've seen only one other post here, by a fella namend "Brent", which exactly describes this particular spool.exe problem.I didn't see a followup from him indicating whether he had fixed his system.

--- the computer is an HP notebook (N3110?) running Windows 98SE. It also has McAfee antivirus, although it has not been updated from the original load, in contrast with many posts here which suggested that a particular McAffee upgrade seemed to precipitate the problem.

--- upon boot, before loading the desktop, I get the dreaded "Spool32.exe has caused a page fault in kernel32.dll" message. The address listed is different than the one that is normally cited in pages devoted to this.

--- the error recurs when trying to load any application which may want to use the printer

I have tried methods ranging from the benign to the radical, in an attempt to get rid of this. David, I know you're watching, so I'll say at the outset that I have replaced the spoolss.dll file with the Windows ME version as posted several times here in the forum. (and yes, I used SFC to do it...)

Here's what I've tried:

1) the Windows "clean boot", reinstall the printer/drivers method. This fails because I even get the spool32 error in Safe Mode. And, as Brent wrote so long ago, the Add Printer Wizard locks up after clicking "Have Disk", and pointing to the correct directory & printer definitions. It will not install a printer.

2) protecting the relevant spool files & directory from being scanned by McAfee.

3) Uninstalled McAffee

4) reinstalled Windows 98SE, although to the same directory, without reformatting the hard drive

The problem persists. I can eliminate it by deleting spool32.exe, but still can't add a printer, as it continues to lock up the Add Printer Wizard.

There are no printers defined in Control Panel, Printers. When I click on "Add Printer", it takes a long time -- 30 sec or more -- to open the Add Printer Wizard. And, as stated earlier, the system hangs after selecting the printer model number and "Have Disk", anyway.

I'm unable to try setting the printer to "raw" mode as suggested, because there is no printer to select and set properties for.

I have seen some interesting suggestions regarding the contents of the "temp" and "spool" directories, and will look into that tonight.

Another interesting suggestion is trying to print from DOS, which I think will work, given the fact that a spare Canon inkjet connected to the parallel port gets initialized about 3 times during the boot process. So it appears that the parallel port is talking. Even at that, I'll also check the port parameters...

If anybody's solved this permutation of the spool32 error, I'd appreciate knowing how it was done. When I fix this -- and I WILL fix it -- I'll follow up for the next guy who runs into this.

Meanwhile, I'm at my wit's end -- not that it took all that long to get there... ;^)

We had this problem also, after about a week of trial and error I have been able to resolve this problem buy doing these two things or just one. 1) ( For us we were running Norton AV corporate) Uncheck the box for spooling in Norton AV. 2) uncheck spool jobs in the the printer properties . We had about 17 win 98 maching that did this for various printers, they are all functing properly now. No .dll's replaced.
