Author Subject: Adding new drives to Raid 5 array      Add to my favorites
Janet Hunt

I have an existing Raid 5 array and I have 2 new drives to add to it to increase my disk space. Just wondering what I do to add these drives to an existing array and not create a new one. I'm running W2K with sp4 and Compaq 370 and Smart array controller 5300. Can I make this addition with the server online?
Thanks for your help

Hi Janut,

If you have netraid assistant great if not you can download and install it from this link (for the Operating System you are running)

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?locale=en_US&pnameOID=19399&taskId=135&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=50440&lang=en&cc=us

and install it in your system then

And here is the documentation on how to expand the array

Follow the instruction

Hi Janet,

I am so sorry this is for HP netserver. I think you have a compaq server so the solution I posted is not going to help you

Janet,

Once the drives are inserted, the controllers BIOS will ask you what you want to do with them. Your options will probably be add to existing and create new. Once added to the existing, the controller will go off rebuilding the array to add the new drives and will take some time. I think the number is 20 minutes per GB. Once complete you will have the addition space created by the additional drives as free space for creation of a new logical drive to be formatted OR to attempt to 'Extend' the current logical drive OR 'Span' logical drives with Win2000.
