Hi, it's Anna from HP Total Care,

Because the original dv6140us (dv6000) wireless problem thread has gotten so long, I started a new thread to repost key information so that it wouldn't be buried.

We've identified an issue that may impact the ability to use the wireless feature on certain notebooks:

HP Pavilion dv6000 series with model numbers between dv60xx and dv63xx; HP Pavilion dv9000 series with model numbers between dv90xx and dv93xx; and Compaq Presario V6000 series with model numbers between V60xx and V63xx.

In some cases, we believe that some of the wireless problems customers may experience may be solved by updating the BIOS with the Softpaq 36551 or greater.

The reason for the BIOS fix is that the internal WLAN card may not work because the signal amplitude on the internal bus to the chipset is too low. As a result, the wireless card and the motherboard cannot communicate. By downloading Softpaq 36551 or greater, it is possible to boost the amplitude of the signals on this bus and thereby solve some WLAN issues.

If the issue you are experiencing does not stem from low amplitude, it could also be an issue between the system board and the wireless card. That said, it is unlikely that replacing the wireless card will solve the issue, so please do not do this.

Historically it is more likely that a system board issue would cause this type of problem rather than an issue with the wireless card. So, if Softpaq 36551 or greater does not help, the next step is to go to:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1842189&lang=en

This link takes you to a program that identifies the potentially impacted models and explains a warranty service enhancement. If you are out of warranty, your product experiences the issue, and falls in the defined product and serial number range, we will provide a repair at no charge.

There is a list of FAQs in the program document. I would encourage you to read through those details. There is a special phone number for those of you who are out of warranty but now qualify for this service. This number is for US and Canada only. I hope you find this information helpful.

The document that has been published on Customer Care is also on the BSC portal at:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c01087277

The document comes up when you are looking for wireless issues for any one of the HP Pavilion dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario V6000 Series Notebook PCs.

Hi Anna,

I've been experiencing the exact same problem that has been talked about in the other thread. I have a Compaq Presario V6110US running Windows XP Media Center. I updated to the new BIOS (F.3a) and that has not fixed my problem. I was reading over the extended warrenty and my serial number was not include (xxx639xxxx). Will there be more serial numbers added as more people like myself are experiencing this problem, or am I more or less S.O.L? My warrenty expired 11 days ago, and if you are now able to repair the wireless problem, I would like to have that done without paying for a warranty extention or for repairs.

Anna,
It's not just the models described in your thread. It also impacts the Presario V3000. The reason is that it only impacts AMD machines. I have the EXACT same problem. Why isn't my machine listed? Through a call to the CEO, I am having my machine fixed as well. ALL AMD machines should be included for coverage with this probelm. I believe HP calls the problem, "APOLLO AND ATLANTIS MOTHERBOARD ISSUE" At least that is what my "Failure" is called.

hi, Anna.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my Pavillion dv6120eu, i bought it in France in January 2007. Five moths ago the wireless device just disappeared. I already try all divers updates, bios updates, and made a system restore too, even format my hard disk, as a technician in hp told me to do during a telephone call. So now i have a problem that i need to solve, someone in hp told me that since i bought my Pc in France and now i live in Venezuela i can`t use the warranty here... so what can i do?
I can't go back in France in order to use the Warranty...

Anna,

I have the exact same problem as many here (WiFi suddenly disconnects, refuses to connect at many occasions etc.) but my laptop is a Pavilion dv6412ej with an Intel processor, not AMD!
What's the deal here? How come you've decided the problem only relates to AMD processors?

Thanks.

Anna
I have a dv6233se that had the wireless problem and the battery problem but have been told my serial number is not included in the extended warranty. I would also love to know if you plan on extending the warranties to everyone else who has been experiencing these problems.

As a side note, when I actually asked to buy a warranty they refused me saying they could not since the notebook had "broken" twice. When I pressed them hard enough they offered me a 1 yr for $139 and a two year for $259. I told the rep I would think about it and call back and he told me that if I did not buy it right then, the price might go up next time I call. I am really dissapointed with the service from HP.

I have DV6000z and the graphics card as well as wireless failed completely. I have spent over a week on the phone with HP first with helpless drones in India whom I would NOT recommend to call even on the special number on

HP 6408nr from the DV6000 series has same problem.

This is a new machine which I've improved by removing Vista and installing XP Pro.
So far, so good, except the wireless card doesn't work. It sees the base station, tries to acquire, but never connects. Really quite odd, really. Alas, as no PCMCIA slot is available, I can't even add
my own WiFi card. With my 6 year old cheapie iMac, I could also lift up the keyboard and install the WiFi card myself.
On the plus side Cheryl is monitoring the posts, and offered a (Compaq?) service pack, which I tried but that also didn't work. Any ideas out there? Thanks, Mark

Hi folks and Anna,

Some information about my notebook pc:

- HP Pavilion dv6215us
- AMD turion 64 MK-36 2.00 GHz
- Memory of 1024 MB
- Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Like many of you guys I have been having the same problem with my wireless adapter for 4 days now.

I called the support and went to all those steps (update the driver to the version 6.0, update the BIOS to the version F.3B and wireless assistant to the version 3.0), but nothing worked at all. HP told me to send the computer in, but I refused because on Anna's post, she said to do not to.

Although, the light blue has came back whenever I have tried to mess with the BIOS. Everytime a would change to Enable option on the network booting, the light would come back on. However, it always comes back off when the computer is restarted.

I tried to force the driver also. On the device manager I have picked up the Broadcom driver through disk installation at the network adapters. Windows always would state that the device is not working and describe a error 31, so i don't know if this helps.

I don't know what it could be, but I'm sure that HP needs bring us a solution soon.
This is a big problem that may burn the company's image out for a long time, so they should worry about it.
I'm still waiting for a solution from HP like many of you guys.

Thank you,

Lucas

I got my dv6000z-cto back last week and the wireless is fixed. It took about 8 business days from initial call until it was back in my possession. According to the tracker web site, they received it and sent it back out the next day. Also, this new motherboard has a 1394 port (old one didn't) and the BIOS is version F.3B. With my good battery (see below) the life of a single charge seems significantly longer. Oh, and no major cosmetic dings like others have reported. That's the good news.

Now the keyboard is not situated correctly in the upper right corner of the case. You can really tell the difference when you press the keys in that area (about 1/5 of the total keyboard). There's a strange "thunk" feel to the keys and is inconsistent with the rest of the keyboard. This was not present before the so-called "service".

Clair, I don't know if this is similar to your situation, but I am getting an electrical buzzing sound coming from the computer (no vibration). It's probably some electical noise manifested in the speakers because when I lower the Windows volume sliders (wave and master) below 50%, the noise goes away. Otherwise, it makes the same bzzzzz-zzz-zzzzz over and over again (with pauses in between). Maybe they boosted the power on these newer mobo's so much that it's leaking noise into other components. This happens without any intervention on my part. This was not present before the so-called "service".

Next, they've either installed a ghost (not Norton's) or the power system in general is seriously hosed. What I am about to describe happens regardless of battery only, battery + A/C, A/C only, straight to wall, surge suppressor (2 different ones) or UPS. The computer will wake itself up whenever it pleases. Normally, I have it set to either "Always On" (and I have that option configed to do exactly that, including the screen) or "Max Battery" which hibernates after 20 minutes. Regardless of whether I wait for it to sleep, close the lid (should hibernate), or tell it to explicitly Standby, Hibernate or Shut Down, it turns itself back on. I am particularly upset because I sent the PC to them with a description of the problems including this one. In all fairness, it was not an issue I covered with them for very long on the phone, but I was afraid if I threw too many issues at them at once, they'd get confused.

Lastly, I sent them one of the batteries (their rep told me to do so) because the HP battery check software reported its capacity as about 50-60% and showed 96% charged when Windows read it as 100% charged (and the charge LED on the front was off). From what I can tell, they never took a look at it. Based on the turnaround time, they are obviously more interested in getting customers out of their hair rather than trying to figure out the problems.

Overall, I would say the system fan is on about the same amount it was before the so-called "service". So, unless the new system board they put in has a more heat-tolerant design, I expect the problems will continue.

To sum up, wireless is fixed, battery/power problem still exists and now it's got 2 new bad behaviors that it didn't have when it left my hands. And I'm not terribly confident the wireless won't go out on me again. Looks like I'll be contacting them again when I have another 2 hours to waste.

As another user on these forums mentioned, don't wait too long to send in your system. Surprised to hear me say that? Having no internal wireless is an annoyance with a not so cheap solution (add-on card). However, if it progresses to blank screens, refusals to boot, etc. how are you going to get to your data then? Back up frequently and get it looked at until it's fixed, replaced, or refunded. Otherwise, HP isn't fulfilling its obligation to provide you with a laptop with the features they specified that works as described.

Are the Case Managers only around during US business hours (daytime, M-F) or 24/7?

You know that saying "You can have it done correct, fast, or cheap; pick 2"? I'll take correct and cheap, please (as long as it takes less than a month). HP, I've shown my patience, where's your diligence? Where are any of your representatives?

Anna,
I also have a similar problem with a new HP dv9623cl purchased 6 weeks ago. I upgraded the bios and the driver for the wlan card which made it somewhat better but clearly when I am operating on battery the problem is worse. I am not able to connect for more than 30 seconds. Plugging into a wall outlet makes it better but it still cuts out at times, despite the identification of a strong signal from the router. Is there a fix for this model. The one suggested earlier in the forum says it is not for this machine. I'd hate to return this laptop to the store for a refund but will have to if issue not resolved. The store has a 90 day refund policy.

I'm having the same wireless issue on my Compaq v6048cl for the second time. The first time was back at the end of July and the machine was repaired by the end of August. I believe they replaced the system board and that seemed to resolve the issue until now. This time it's just the wireless card that's dead (so far anyways). I tried the latest BIOS updates and OS reload both times and neither did any good. I'm contacting HP support tonight to see if I can get this thing fixed again.

Hopefully it will be fixed for good this time as this will be the fourth time I'll have had this thing serviced since March of this year. I've had malfunctioning CD/DVD writers that kept ejecting the tray at the slightest touch on the laptop. I got the first drive replaced in March, sent it in for motherboard replacement in August, and when I got the laptop back from having the motherboard replaced the replacement drive they shipped me in March was malfunctioning as soon as I booted the machine. On to round four I guess.

Hi Anna,

I posted this in the other forum, but did not recieve a reply:

Sent it in, got it back in 5 days, working so far. However, what I'd like to know is if I still qualify for the 12 month extended warranty if it breaks again or if I'm now saddled with the 90-day post repair warranty.

I'd like to know if you get stuck with the 90 day warranty as well. It's been about 97 days or so since I got my laptop back from the first time it was repaired.

I have a DV2622ca and I have the same issue, after owing my laptop for thee and half weeks (conviently outside of my 14 day return policy with future shop) my wireless card did the same thing, at first it would show up but not connect to my wireless network at school. HP then blamed the school, so I went to IT they re-checked everything and my account was fine, I was able to use an iBook and connect fine with my account. tried my laptop at home after setting up my wireless network, my desktop worked but not my laptop. they next day my wireless card vanished from device manager. I have updaed my driver to 6.0 revision B I have the Broadcom wireless card and not the intel, my Bios was updated to f.06 from f.04 and now its f.13 after its release on 11/20/2007 and this wireless card still does not work. If I ket my laptop sit off over night, when it first boots the wireless card shows up for about 5 mins then it is gone from device manager.

The best part is, I have wasted over 12 hours of my time on the phone, most of it on hold, have had at least 3 phone tech support guys get me to remove the card and put it back in, tell me the same story, have me go through the same trouble shooting steps , YES I POWER CYCLED MY LAPTOP! YES I HAVE THE NEW DRIVERS! YES I HAVE THE NEW BIOS! NO i'M NOT RESEATING THE CARD FOR THE FOURTH TIME!
and I am now almost at week three of waiting for my "replacment" wireless card to arrive in the mail which I was suppsot to have on 11/09/2007. I have been waiting for a phone call form a case manager for a week and a half now, I have had this so called e-mail escalated so that I would receve a call back from a case manager within 24 hours, and that was 5 days ago. When I called to ask about my wireless card, two reps told me it was enroute, the other three have told me the truth that it is pending shipping and they have no idea why it has not shipped out and when it will ship. I have delt with one rep that has been nice enough to keep calling me back, Jennifer, your awesome, I wish you could fix my laptop, but I know you can't.

so lets summarize

3 week old HP laptop
defective wireless card, or I fear now motherboard

12 hours wasted on the phone

2 lie's from phone support

2 weeks waiting for a replacment wireless card

3 calls about case managers not calling me back

1 solicitation from HP to buy their extended warrenty (is this the only way I can expect to get any type of _good_ service?) at a whopping 489 dollars!

atleast 10 hours surfing the web to see if this can be fix

1 in a million chance a new wireless card will fix this issue.

I have no idea when this will be resolved, if ever.

If I ever get a call back fomr case manager I will post date,

If I ever get my wireless card I will post date

If HP turens my laptop into a refurb by changing the motherboard I will post date and if this fix's issue.

I think this issue is also effecting the DV2000 series, on that last thread I wasn't the only DV2000 customer wit hthsi issue. apperernly its becasue the AMD motherboards have a bad port where wireless card connects. This could be false as no one at HP will give an answer as to yes or no.

P.S. I am a HP C A N A D A customer not a HP U S A customer, for some reaons HP canada likes to xfer you to HP USA so they can say their is nothign they can do to help you and then Xfer you back to HP canada who 9 out of 10 times is going to Xfer you back to HP USA. only reason I am posting in this forum is becasue apperently HP canada doesn't have a support forum. and I hope someoen with a DV2000 series will figure out if this is out motherboards or something we can fix.

Hi Anna,
This is Patrick Sexon from Philippines. I have an HP Pavilion dv6100 cto Product number RD167AV Serial number CNF642222C Start date : 24 Oct, 2006 End date : 24 Oct, 2007. I did have the beeping-no start and no battery charge light trouble last April 2007 i had it repaired with my defective keyboard. So they (HP Phils) replaced the keyboard and battery to solve the issue and used a SPS-BD SYS DV6000 to diagnose the problem. It was workin fine, but just last weekend, the broadcom wireless disappeared on device manager, wireless light does not turn blue from amber, and HP wireless assistant does not load when i double click it. I tried system restore, system recovery (ercovery disc); I also had the bios upgraded to F3B and broadcom drivers updated from hp.com. It didn't work.

I just talked to a representative here in Hewlett-Pacard Philippines Corp (GF Robinson's Summit Center Ayala Ave Makati City tel: (632)8886100 fax: (632)8307589) and they accepted the repair (under waranty). I was telling them about the possibility of problem from the wireless card and systemboard but they don't seem to understand why. I even showed them this thread and the link you mentioned. I was just worried because they might not be briefed or informed regarding the dv6xxx etc issues with wireless lan. I hope you can do something. Hi Anna

This is the most frustrating experiece I have ever had with a notebook product. I have done everything asked of me; removed and reinserted wireless card;downloaded and installed latest broadcom drivers;updated bios to F.3a then to F.3b The phone support from the India call center is no help they promised to call me at my hone to resolve at a 6 pm PST on 11/27 that never happened. This notebook needs to go in for service to have this wireless problem resolved. How can we make this happen?

note your link in your body of your post on 11/28 takes you to some wierd lanuage page it is of no use

Hi Anna,

I have a similar problem like David.

I bought my Laptop in US, and now I am living in Germany, as already informed in another forum.

Please, I really would like to have an alternative to my problem because I am not planning to go to US in the next year, and I have back home a total useless laptop.

I would appreciate an e-mail feedback.

A note to everyone on this forum, today I re-seated my laptops wireless card while it was cold, EG I had not powered it on yet. I complete removed the card, blew everything out (just don't blow spit into your laptops ;) and assembled it back in as tight as I could EG screw as tight as I could, the antennas so that nothign would touch them and the foam bit on the plastive cover making the best contact wit hte gold ends of antennas. and made sure the card was as securly in place as I could without breaking anything. I was trying to see if maybe it is a connection issue between the motherboard and the card and not the card itself.

low and behold, it wors, if I move the laptop the wrong way, or touch the cover it will disco and then do the same thing, wlan diabled then dissappear from device manager. then all I have to do it tap on the plastice cover a bit. and it works. Now my laptop alos blue screened for the first time troday, I can only assume this is becasue the wireless card is not makign a good connection and this is leading to some kinda of short or something. This tells me that it is indeed the motherboard. I hope that it is the wireless card, and whe nI get the new one it will work, but I'm not optimistic.

ON a different note, HOORAY! I finally got a call fomr a case manager. His name is Jay and he seems to be willing to help me out.

so I will try the new wireless card. and post back on here to see if it fix's it.

I will post on here if I have to send the laptop in for a new motherboard.

but I have some bad news folks, if you can re-seat the card and kinda tinker with it and it works, its not the card its the motherboard. and unlike you lucky DV6000 and DV9000 owners us poor DV2000 sob's don't get to have our laptops replaced, we have to deal with out whole systems being molested by some under paid tech.

I just hope my laptop works. and that I don't lose too much time or data.

My laptop DV9010Ca did not fall within the serial number range indicated but did have the failing wireless issue.

I was within the warranty period by 3 weeks and HP has repaired the unit by replacing the motherboard. Total repair time was not bad about 10 days including shipping time.
I hope this fixes the issue once and for all but based on the posts by others I suspect this may recur.

Except for this issue I have been really pleased with the unit. I would like to see HP stand by this particular issue for the life of my unit (as long as I own it) and that would be the kind of customer service that warrants the J.D. Power award.

J.D. Power? They've got to perform better than "Crazy Bob's Electronics Emporium and Used Car Dealership" before even thinking about J.D. Power!

I completed a survey about my initial "service" experience a day or 2 before Thanksgiving. At the end, it asked "you said there is still an issue, should we contact you?" I said yes and heard from a case manager today (it would have been yesterday, but I wasn't near my phone and he tried contacting me a whopping 5 minutes before he was leaving for the day). My previous contact had been with a flunkie tech rep.

This morning, I gave him the rundown of my current (and mostly new) issues with the computer and he set up another return box to be sent to me. So, in a day or 2 a box should be here and I'll find out if they really can figure out the causes or if they'll just look at it sideways for about 30 minutes and send it right back as is.

Oh, and 1 more thing. Anna, how is it you can take the time to go to another thread to mention that this thread exists, yet you can't give rmackowsky an answer or at least a "I'll look into it and let you know"? Granted, that is unfair since I would expect Jim "MIA since 11/9" Kahler or some other non-engineer to be the appropriate person to  answer about a warranty coverage issue.

J.D. Power? At this point, HP Total Care(lessness)'s integrity and customer commitment is like an H.P. Lovecraft novel: a work of fiction.

Same wireless problem here, light remains orange,

I'm a bit worried that HP is being somewhat vague about the exact source of the problem. Given that most of these breakdowns happen over some time of use, is the suggested mainboard replacement just a short/mid term solution to tie people over until the warranty runs out or until the customers feel it's time to upgrade anyway.

This problem only arose after 11 months for me, and if the problem happens again in another 11 months, I'd seriously consider whether it's worth the hassle of going through the HP customer support system, or just use it as an excuse to get a shiny new pc (probably not a HP though).

Is this what they're counting on?

Hello I'm a Compaq v6000 user. After 14 months, Wi-Fi stopped working, DVD stared suddenly open and not open when I pushed the button, system didn't boot after restart. Month later I saw only blue diodes and black screen :/.

Solution - change motherboard.
Diagnosis - heatsink didn't chill properly and chipset were overheated.

Motherboard in Dv6000/v6000(I think dv9000, dv2000, too) has one bug. All heat coming from CPU goes through chipset to heatsink. AMD processors produce much more heat than Intel, so problem appear only In AMD.
So I have a favour to You. Could You post temp of yours CPU's and GPU. i.e.

V6000 TL-52/GF7200
Idle
Core0 50*C-58*C depends of fan speed
Core1 57*C-65*C depends of fan speed
Gpu about 58*C

Stress
Core0 73*C
Core1 76*C
Gpu about 75*C

All temps are from Everest.
In my opinion this temperatures are much to high. HP should publish new BIOS which spins fan faster!!! If not, this problem will repeat continually!!!!!!

P.S. Sorry for my English.

well yopu can mod the phenoix BISO, I don't know if it gives you the ability to make the fan spin faster, but that is a good point, I have owed nothing but AMD and they do run much hotter. I think it has more to do with the plug that the wireless card goes into, the reason other stuf breaks is becasue its making a connection then not making one, its likea live wire flopping around. But I don't think our Anna is ever going to reply.

Good oint on the J.D. power award, HP should juts buy one like most other company's as winning one would cost more.

I have a pavilion dv2104eu and have been experiencing problems with my wireless connection for about a month or so now. the laptop is 11 months old, i have called hp a number of time, only to be taken through the same process each and every time.

The Broadcom drivers are no longer visible in devise manager and the small LED on the wirelass swith is almost constantly orange. Ocasionally the wireless springs back to life but normally for a matter of a day or so.

Anyone know how I can finally get this sorted?

Hello,

my computer falls in category mentioned in
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01087277&dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us
1) model: dv6154eu is between dv60xx and dv63xx.
2) serial number: XXX6412XXX falls between xxx625xxxx - xxx726xxxx.

Symptoms:
* The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected in the Device Manager. - Random, sometimes it detects, sometimes not - you newer know.
* The battery charge indicator light does not turn on when the battery is installed and the AC adapter is connected - Random, sometimes it works sometimes not.

But there I read:
This service enhancement program is available in North America for 12 months after your original standard limited warranty expires.

I'm living in Estonia, so I'm left out?
I need very good explanation why I'm left out.

When I contacted with company who is providing warranty services but they refused becuse warranty expired 2 days ago.

There is no way to get some clear answer from HP Estonia becuse warranty services are outsourced. So who will solve this unfair situation?

Btw. I'm unhappy owner of this particular HP laptop for 12 monts and it was 2 of them in different warranty repairs (HDD, wirelss, wirelss again).

In my personal opinion it is thievery to make nonworking product and then refuse to fix it.

Hi all,
I have written to Anna. I have called HP India twice. I have been cut off from the script reader the first time after she had me undo the bios update recommended by HP online (1 hour call). I was placed on hold for 30 minutes waiting for a supervisor to request I be allowed to speak to someone with English as a PRIMARY language -- so I hung up. I now have a laptop which is back to its original dysfunctional state. Still frustrated, I have devised a plan to resolve this unstable wireless issue... I am going back to Costco where I bought it and will return it with a complaint to the management there that they are selling defective product which HP acknowledges has no clear cut solution. Then I'm going to find another laptop. Costco has a 90 day return policy and luckily I am within that time limit. Good luck to all the rest of you who are stuck with this.

P.S. Anna if you would like to have someone contact me regarding "my" problem laptop.... Email me their direct U.S. phone number. It's Costco on December 4th.

Hello all,
Just wanted to let you know I returned the laptop today. As an aside, Costco was no hassle return for full refund. (within 90 days)

I did finally reach a "Senior Case manager" . They put me right through and the nice lady I spoke to tried very hard to help me. Unfortunately she had no new ideas of how to boost the power to the adapter so it could communicate with the motherboard. (Assuming that was the problem)

Good luck to all!

Anna,

Or anyone at HP,

Let me jump in the bandwagon here.
HP Pavilion DV2214us
AMD Turion X2 1.6 Gig and 2 gigs of Ram
Vista home premium
Owned for 10 months.
Broadcom Wifi wouldn't load after reboot. Not listed on Device Manager.
Had to deinstall and reinstall drivers, power drain, and then reboot to get it to work.

Called HP Tech Support and did the following:
Reinstall drivers.
Reseat card, Ram, and HDD.
Reflash bios F.34 (twice)
Clean reinstall OS. That worked for a few hours. Now there is nothing I can do for the wifi card to be recognized. HP Support will be sending me a new wifi card but I know it wont work because I tried existing card on a DV2415nr (wife's unit) and my card worked in hers and hers failed in mine. This tells me that problem is not the card.

I will wait and get the new wifi to come in and install but I know what is going to happen. I hope that HP then asks for my laptop and replaces the mother board or replaces it all together. This ordeal and the lack of proactive support from HP (all the techs that I talk to think this is something new) leaves a very sour taste in my mouth, specially since I bought a second unit for my wife.

Please HP come through for your customers and don't leave us hanging.

I wouldn't wish for a power boost to get the WiFi working. With the heat these things produce already, it's like putting a band-aid on an ICU patient.

In my case, I got an electrical buzz in my audio output and a computer that wouldn't remain asleep.

Here's another one. DV9010ca bought 01/07. Notebook went to sleep and upon power up, orange glow of death would not go away. Wireless card invisible. Wireless assistant non responsive. While reading forum, suddenly reappeared. 'Found New Hardware' blah, blah, blah. Worked again. Curiosity killed the cat. I closed the cover, reopened it, lo and behold, missing card again. I have a few weeks left on 1yr warranty. When will HP recognize this is a major PR disaster for them if they do not make ALL their customers happy with a permanent solution to this widespread issue? I'm rather skeptical to send my machine in for mobo replacement, since the problem will most likely reoccur AFTER limited warranty on repairs expires. I'm very disappointed in what I'm reading about all this. I've owned HP printers and desktops and have never had a problem. Guess I'm gonna have to line up with the rest and hope for a quick, permanent fix.

Trying again:

What I'd like to know is if I still qualify for the new 12 month extended warranty if it breaks again or if I'm now saddled with the 90-day post repair warranty.

If there is a better way to get this question answered, please refer me in that direction.

Dec 8, 2007 18:27:09 GMT    Unassigned

To rmackowsky,

The computer has a 24 month warranty on it, from date of purchase, for this particular issue, regardless of when you have it serviced.

The 3 month service warranty runs concurrent to the regular/extended warranty.

If you have the computer serviced in the first 21 months of ownership, the service warranty really doesn't apply.

If you have less than 3 months left in regular/extended warranty when you have service done, that's when it kicks in. Even if your regular warranty is expired, you still get 90 days from the day you get your computer back, as a guarantee that the repairs will resolve the issue.

Hope that helps.

To anyone that missed the link on what HP is doing to address the wifi issue on these models, it can be found here:

Same problem here... Happened last week. I got a new wireless card shipped to me, but still no results.

I've tried every method above to fixing, but still no results (bios, safemode, new wireless card..)

I've spent hours on the phone with HP and at the end all they want me to do is send my computer in to get it fixed. Im hoping theres another solution than me being computerless for a week and then a few months later the same problem will occur (by then my warranty will probably be up)

I have a Pavilion DV65000 and I've had it two weeks and have not been able to connect to my wireless network ONCE. The first day I had it, the wireless light stayed orange. Since then, it's been blue and has found my network but will not allow me to connect.

The worst part is that I've wasted the last couple weeks talking to Linksys support thinking it was their problem. I never would think that my entire $750 laptop is compltely useless. And my model is not in the range of the warranty. So am I screwed? Am I going to be forced to pay hundreds of dollars for a repair for something two weeks old?

Now I don't even know what type of PC I have. Next to product it says dv6500 and three rows down it says dv6440us. I'm really getting screwed by this. I read all this about updating BIOS and installing new drivers which is either stuff I don't know or don't have the time to do.

Can I send the laptop back for a full refund or is it too late? I bought it around Thanksgiving of this year from Amazon. I'm using a HP desktop right now which has worked OK for the last 4 years.

D, I'm afraid I must disagree about sending it in. The short version of my saga to date:

WiFi dead after 11 months, computer wakes itself from hibernate whenever it pleases.

Talked to regular support rep, sent to HP, replaced motherboard and updated BIOS. Total turnaround: 7 days (In HP's hands less than 1 day)

WiFi working, power problem still there, speakers buzzing, keyboard not seated properly.

Was asked to complete a survey about the experience. At the end of it was an option to have HP contact me because the problem wasn't resolved. Case Manager called 5 business days later.

Talked to Case Manager and PC was sent back.

Shipped to HP and back, only "service" performed listed as "BIOS Adjustment". Total turnaround: 5 days. (In HP's hands less than 1 day)

Only keyboard seating fixed, some of the other issues slightly improved, but still present and it's obvious they didn't spend even 20 minutes testing the "repair".

Called Case Manager (who actually tried to call me before I had a chance to pick up the return shipment) and reported the situation. I was offered a replacement. I've specified an Intel machine and they promised the new one would have equal or better specs. Supposed to be ready in less than 2 weeks.

Granted, this is an AMD DV6000 CTO whose serial number IS in the range of the free service bulletin. However, the replacement motherboard introduced errors immediately, so it won't always last the 90 days where they have to cover the work for those of you who are out of warranty and not in the serial range.

I agree that bulletin should be expanded with respect to serial #s and models. However, it would seem much more worthwhile to try to get a resolution from HP than to just complain. At every step of the way, with respect to every detail I encountered, the squeaky wheel got the grease. Don't hesitate to mention any issues you're experiencing with the computer, even if it seems minor or unrelated. As long as it's a legitimate issue/malfunction and you're persistent, they will make an attempt to resolve it.

I do have sympathy for those of you who can't afford to be without a PC for any time and don't have the resources for a stand-in. As we've all seen so far, they don't have a "fix", just repairs they can try.

If you do decide to contact HP:

-Be persistent
-Work with a Case Manager, not just a regular rep
-Be firm, but not abusive

Basically, use the same approach as if you're trying to get a credit card interest rate reduced. :-)

Hey Anna, where are you at?? Where is your newest solution to hiding the real problem?

HP is sending me another box. This is the third time my notebook (DV2213CL) is being sent in for repair. I have had persistant wireless, booting, and screen crashing problems (gets a bunch of vertical lines and computer requires reboot). These problems all persist within minutes out of the return box. I have had the hard drive replaced along with the motherboard. The last repair that I recieved back yesterday, the wireless was not recognised on the first boot. Just goes to show that they do not test these repairs. If they do not properly repair it this time (#3), I will be demanding a new unit. HP has had reasonable and adequate chances to repair my product for the same reacurring issues.

HP would now be smart to realize that it will be benificial to them to replace the notebook with a new model, rather than invest in multiple repairs, shipping, packaging, labor cost - not only repair labor but also their so called support. The motherboard replacement has only been a short term bandaid for most. There are some customers in the other forum with four motherboard replacements so far. Two could be chance, but four, are you kidding me!

The heat that my notebook generates is outragious. I have had to buy one of those cooling fans to carry with me just to keep the notebook cool enough to sit on my lap. If I didn't need portability, I would have bought a desktop. Do the Intel machines get this hot? Anyways, these are my frustrations and I believe this is only the begginning of a larger problem to come.

To be fair, I must reply to my Dec 5th post. Machine was sent for repair on Monday and it arrived today (Thursday) with a new motherboard. Quick turn around.

It seems like they take the unit out of the box and throw the mother board on there without any further testing. I believe this is the case because as soon as I powered on the unit I got the system not shut down properly prompt with the option to boot to safe mode. Just as if they powere on the unit to see if the power light came on and then killed the power right after that. Also, the wireless card was not recognized until after it was installed by the OS. Something that would have been done if a proper boot up was done after the new mother board was installed. They must hurry this machines like crazy.

I am pretty satisfied with the handling of my case. This doesn't mean that I am pleased with this whole fiasco as I will never have the same level of confidence that I once had. I just wish that I get some more mileage out of this repair.

Good luck

So if I'm reading that correctly, if my computer, which was repaired for this issue at 10 months after purchase, develops the same issue at 23 months after purchase, it is still eligible for repair, correct?

Alright, here's my complete story thus far:

1. Had the "blue light special" problem, as it has apparently come to be known as. Spoke with two tech support persons (one online, one by phone). No solution.

2. Third tech support guy, we agree it's a hardware problem, and he sends me a new wireless card to replace my current one. I go through the somewhat nerve-racking process of playing doctor with my own laptop, but it wasn't that difficult. End result: still no joy.

3. Call another tech person, and make arrangements to send my laptop off for repairs. Had it back in a just a week. Take it out of the box, and... it doesn't turn on!

4. Call another tech support person. After some time, we reset back to factory specs and whipe my hard drive in order to get my laptop to turn on, finally. Unfortunately, laptop still experiences moments where it suddenly turns itself off, no warning, just pops off. I need to live with it for now, being a student going into exams and projects.

5. Middle of exams. My laptop pops off again, and this time, it won't turn on again. Can't even whipe my own harddrive.

6. Call tech support. They tell me I'm out of warranty. Imagine my shock, he's trying to convince me to buy phone service so that he can try to help me:

a) I had sent them my warranty information weeks ago to be updated, it doesn't expire for a while still.
b) My laptop was repaired by them less than a month ago, which I understand gives me a certain warranty for another couple months?
c) HP has issued an extended warranty to laptops experiencing these issues.
d) I have an insurance policy, not through HP, so I have a backup just in case.

I wasn't about to play dumb. After explaning my problem, and that I am NOT going to pay to get phone service so that I can take advantage of an extended warranty, he puts me on hold for a bit, and when he comes back, his first words are "So can you tell me what trouble your laptop is experiencing?". *sigh* I tell him, again. He wants to whipe my harddrive, which I can't do, first off, and I also explain I will not live in the fear of having to whipe my drive every couple weeks just to be able to turn my laptop on.
Finally, I had to write an exam in two hours, so I get a case number, and say goodbye.

7. I call HP again. Tell them my problem. They tell me I'm eligable for a repair, "even though I'm not in warranty." Lucky me. My box is being sent in, should arrive tomorrow.

There is apparently a problem with the motherboards. They are replacing them.

There is apparently STILL a problem with the replacement motherboards.

It would be nice to hear from HP.

Hi Folks,

I have a few things I need to update you with:

A new BIOS:
I wanted to let you know that there is a new BIOS, WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS version F.3D, released this week that should be installed as a preventive measure. This updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues. We recommend everyone download this update. If you are had your motherboard replaced already, definitely get this bios update. If you are sending in your notebook to have the motherboard replaced, we will be updating the bios at the time of repair for you. If you have opted in for automatic updates it will be pushed to you. If you have registered your product with us we will be sending e-mails out to recommend this update.

How to get the update:
Go to www.hp.com/support to get the BIOS version right for your notebook. Click on the appropriate region from the global map and then specific country. You will navigate to the country specific support and driver page. Select the download drivers and software option then enter your specific model number (example: dv6040us) OR use the auto detect button. Either option should take you to the product specific software and driver page. Select the operating system version you are using to get to the list of all software and driver updates available for your product. Scroll down to the bios section and select the F.3D version to initiate the update.

New news for Euorope on the Warranty Service Enhancement:
If you are in Europe, please go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01087194&dlc=en&lc=en&cc=uk for information on the Warranty Service Enhancement. This web site has just gone up. The North America program has already been released and highlighted in several of the previous posts.

That is all for now. Stay tuned. I will be in touch again as I get more information.

It would be nice to know if anyone else with the DV2000 series is having the same issues. looks like they are from different posts.

HP might actually be addressing my issue, the wireless card they sent me is still in limbo, same with the battery. A Case Manager had me fax in additional info, so it will be interesting to see if I hear from him again.

If HP does anything to make this right for me I will post here. I must admit at this point I am still a skeptic, after 4 ARM requestes and no one can tell me where my wireless card is? or why it hasn't been shipped? perhaps HP pulled the boardcom card as it was defective *shrug* who knows.

I just want HP to fix this :(

PS to any other people that can't be without your laptop, a USB wireless adapter is around 40 bucks, they do work, I used a friends for three days and it worked great. the wireless N ones are expensive, so it would be nice to have a good working wireless N card ;)

If anyone from HP is watching this thread, it would be nice if your posted something so we know you guys are working on something. Or atleast tell us what is the casue of this! I still think its the slot where the wireless card goes into. their is no reason why reseating a card can sometimes make it work again, but if you move the laptop even a little it stops. This screams slot issue, which would mean if peoples motherboards are being replaced and it happens again, than its defective motherboards and HP needs to find a new supplier, or chnage us all over to intel, after all they are changing the motherboard sometimes 4 times! would it not just be cheaper and better for everyone if they just swapped us to Intel setups? I would miss my Nvidia card, infact I would miss a lot about this machine, but I would love to have a good stable working laptop.

Have him try to save the file to his desktop. If it still asks for admin, right click on the file and choose "run as administrator"
Not sure what's blocking it, but he may be just trying to RUN the download directly from the web rather than save it first.

Well, after a couple of attempts at reseating wireless card, called HP got a new wireless card and of course did not fix the problem, went to HP website saw a new BIOS update, downloaded it and during the reflas I got the dreaded blue screen of death. Spent another hour on th phone with HP. reseated RAM Wireless card and Harddrive they finally figured it must be a hardware issue, got my box yesterday and sent in same day. got an email stating my notbook reached them now just waiting. I am not estatic with the customer service but I have had better experience calling the north american call center, there number is listed on the page with the warranty extension. These people actually speak english as their primary language. I have been reading this forum since my wireless went ten toes up in October and two other forums with the same issue.

Best of luck to all

I've been on the phone with HP for hours and by the end of each conversation im left with the same result, "please send us your computer to be fixed"

I will not send my computer in so this can happen only months after and i will not send it in to get back the same junk computer.

I will go buy a USB wireless and work with that until something gets solved with these laptops!

My wireless has been missing for several months. Tonight (Christmas Eve), it suddenly reappeared. Five days ago I installed BIOS version F.3D recommended in the critical update from HP. At the time I restarted the computer and saw no difference. Now five days later my wireless is suddenly back. Coincidence? It will be interesting to see if it stays.

Sadly i'm still unable to install the new driver. It still tells me i need to install it as an administrator, while im logged in as the administrator...

I celebrated the end of Christmas Eve with the sudden return of my wireless, five days after executing the critical update. However, after going into and returning from standby mode, it has gone again. The Grinch? Anyway, as far as I'm concerned it provides interesting diagnostic information. I've heard others say that theirs have come and gone but this was the first time for me, and after several months. I still choose to hold off sending it back for a new motherboard until the permanent solution has been figured out by HP. They've been a good quality company, and I, for one, want to see them continue. Happy Holidays everybody.

I have posted my problems on the other forum for this. I have had this problems since the weekend and been on the HP chat. I was asked to flash & update the BIOS, install the driver and then got a confirmation from teh chat that this is a hardware problem. I then went on the HP site and found this forum. Due to the issues around this Laptop, I have missed updating my brother's site which is tramatic for me and my family. I am just so upset that HP has known about this problem for over 6 months and has done nothing to permanently address it.

6 months in the technology world is a long time for a problem to be festering, it you don't have a solution it, own up and replace all the laptops.

I know, I can get it working by using an extenal USB adaptor and will do that today but that kind of defeats the purpose of buying machine which has it inbuilt.

Clearly, this is not an acceptable situation. I would like to get a replacements with an laptop that works properly and with adequate support.

Would appreciate a response on this.

I have a Pavillion dv2120us and am having the same problem with the wireless adapter. Also I am having startup issues ( everything sounds like it is starting up but I have no display) and since the display issues have started the pixels in my LCD have started dying.I spent 2 hours on the phone with customer service yesterday arguing with them about reading me a script.(I repair desktops but have never worked on notebooks) I tried assuring him that I had tried all the troubleshooting on his list. Finally he said they would send me a box to send it in for repairs. I asked if they could send me the parts to put in myself and he said they needed to diagnose my problem but if they did send me parts they would need my credit card # for colateral.(Of all the nerve.) I asked what they thought was wrong with it and he said they would not know until they checked it out. Finally I gave in and said send me the box. Funny when I logged in to check the status it said it was a MOBO issue. You can never get a straight answer out of these guys because they are reading a script and know nothing about what they are telling you.

I too was reluctant in sending it back but my warrenty runs out next month and I am trying to extend it a little to see if they finally resolve this issue. I am very disapointed that the DV2000 series is not on there list because it is clearly an AMD issue not a certain model.

I am talking to a lawyer to see what my options are and He thinks we are all entitled to a brand new laptop. They are breaking their warrenty agreement in not supplying us with a FIX instead of a temporary, hope your warrenty runs out solution.

Hi Anna,
Here is all that is on my new DV6200 CTO notebook. It has a non-functioning Broadcom WLAN adapter and I have installed the new BIOS F.3D with no success. I agree w/ others that if HP is having so much trouble w/ this that maybe new laptops are in order.

Thanks
Terry

It seems you are only concentrating on certain HP model about wireless connection problem. I did post my question regarding dv2021us I know there are also HP dv2120us users having wireless trouble like the model I have. I bought this last 11/06 and on the 11th month, my wireless connection were gone as what other users are talking about. After following all the excruciating necessary steps, instructions and proceedures ive gone thru like what those HP users were experiensing, eq talking to techs etc. And I end up asking for a new wireless card during that time my HP dv2021us still under warranty. But to no avail untill now I still have no wireless connection. Is there still a chance for my HP dv2021us wireless connection be fix knowing my warranty ended last 11/07. Am I qualified for HP warranty enhancement program? hope to hear specific answer and respond about the matter.

Hi Anna,

Is this problem by chance also happening in the Presario V2000 series with the Broadcom cards? The wireless in my daughter's V2000 will work for about 30 seconds after being started, then won't transfer any futher data (though the status says "connected" and "signal strength excellent"!). I got another replacement card of the same model off Ebay, and it does exactly the same thing, leading me to think it may be a signal level issue. When I use a USB wireless adaptor, that one works great and doesn't stop transferring.

This machine seems to be cursed in other (possibly related?) ways -- it won't charge batteries either. It says it is charging but the percentage never increases, and I can move the battery to another V2000 in which it charges just fine. Is there maybe a voltage regulation problem in this machine causing all this grief? It also stopped charging the RTC battery and the screen has had to be replaced. Quite a lot of problems for an ~18 month old laptop.
Thanks.

For my full saga, see my posts above. The short version:

DV6000 CTO bought in Nov. 2006 (U.S.), AMD version. Original non-accidental 1-year warranty. Serial # within the bulletin's specified range. This is not a mission-critical PC.

Nov 2007 to Dec 2007...

- Wireless gone, sent unit back to HP and bought 1 more year of warranty, this time with accidental damage protection (ADP)

- Received with new motherboard (and new problems... waking itself up, buzzing audio/bad electrical ground)

- Filled out an online survey, indicated issue is not settled, received a call from a case manager, who I dealt with for the remainder.

- Sent back to HP, returned with a "BIOS Adjustment", absolutely no change in the symptoms. They didn't even test their non-fixes probably because they knew it wouldn't work.

- Contacted HP, they offered to send a new system. I specified Intel hardware and they did follow through on their promise to replace it with a "same or better" machine. They did so, including the extra battery and TV tuner I bought with the computer. Also, it was ready and in my hands ahead of the originally estimated 2-week time frame.

- When I inquired about moving my newly purchased warranty year to this computer, he said he'd make the change and I requested email confirmation. They were good enough to bump it to a total of 3 years all with ADP.

To be fair, the shipping turnaround time was excellent. Also, they never wiped my HDD and I never made a mention about that in my interactions with them. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have this solution than a class action settlement (if and when that happens). If your serial # is included in the repair bulletin, START THE PROCESS NOW!!! If yours is not included, HP needs to expand their definition for it and may be the only way for that to happen, given how long they've dragged their feet (6 months now).

HP, I've got mixed feelings about you. I'm glad you gave me a solution, but you need to help the other owners out as well. This goes doubly for the DV6 and 9 series since you've already half-admitted they have a problem you need to address with the service bulletin. A bad design is a bad design. I never would have accepted an AMD replacement. And I'm not biased against AMD, it's what's in the desktop I built.

Jim I'd be willing to bet that if you run your call reports grouped by problem, then by HP model series, this goes beyond the DV6 and 9 series. The same goes for Compaqs.

Good luck everyone.

I have a Compaq Presario F558us with the same problem. Bought the notebook July 2007 and lost my wireless connection December of 2007. After updating the BIOS and downloading new drivers, it still does not work. HP is having me mail notebook in for repair, but they have told me there is no problem with my model like there is with the dv6000 models.

My wireless issue sounds exactly the same as the issues with the dv6000 models.

Sounds like the beginning of the same run around...

I don't think the video and disappearing wireless problem is limited to the dv6000/dv9000 models. I bought my daughter a Pavilion dv2020ca ( EZ649UA) in August 2006). Soon after the warranty has expired external monitor gave a pale green hue and after about a week the connection stopped working alltother. You could connect the extrnal monitor and there was no signal to it and it didn't show up in the video setings. About a month later the wireless connection went south. No connection and the wireless network disappeared from the device manager. This problem was on and off and I did a full restoration (updated bios as well) and the wireless worked for a few days, (monitor still gave a pale green hue over the full screen. Once again the wireless disappeared (didn't even show in the bios)within a week. Then the whole machine started to heat up. If you shut it down and then re-booted and went let's say to bios, the machine would shut down within minutes due to over heating. You could have fried eggs on it. After the second tier techie connected to the machine his diagnostics were the hardrive had failed. As of writing this the laptop is in the HP reapiar centre being fixed (at my cost).

The video and wireless problem with this model, dv2020ca, are Exactly the same as in the other models mentioned in the thread so I suspect the problem is more common than HP leads us to believe, not limited the the 6000/9000 series.

Those problems appeared months before the HD problem. After my calls to HP on both problems I was told something had failed. Obviously. I have been providing hardware support since -85 so I know a failing component when I see one.

The only question here is how wide these above problems are and when were they known by HP?. Is the problem tied to a certain MB manufacturer?

This wouldn't be the first time a bad motherboard is the problem. Lord knows ASUS made a boatload of motherboards with bad capacitors. Ask IBM.

My notebook presario V6305CA was a gift purchased in canada in July 2007. i've contacted the HP support here in the Philippines and did update the adaptor drivers and BIOS version.

You must be kidding. The HP support guy I spent almost an hour with played dumb and said I'd have to pay for the repairs because I am 3 weeks over my warranty on my dv9005ca. No WLAN, same problems as everyone else. Updating done, don't see a difference yet. This all started when I changed the power options so that this machine (my daughter's) would standy/hibernate. My dv9420ca will be going back as a return when the first sign of a problem appears

Seeing as I have a TX1000 laptop a that has started with the wireless problem (missing in device manager, HP wireless assistant doesn't work) and the problems and non-response people have had from HP Support with this problem I will say that this was my first HP laptop purchase .
Given the amount of people writing into the various HP forums on this subject and the fact that they have not come up with a definitive solution to it leads me to believe they are going to loose a lot of customers, current and future.

I too have the exact same problem with my dv2104eu in the UK. A couple of days ago the wireless light went orange with the Broadcom adapter missing from Device Manager and the HP Wireless Assistant not functioning. My problem is my laptop is one month out of warranty...

Tried releasing the "flea" power (which worked once but not subsequently), updating the BIOS (no effect), running the shadowchemist safe mode fix (which worked once) and reseating the wireless card (no effect).

HP tech support (all my emails seem to end up in the US for some reason) offer nothing else except phoning them at 60p per minute...

From what I have read this problem extends beyond the models identified for extended warranty. But how can we get HP to recognise or admit to this?

Cheapest solution for now seems to be a USB dongle...

Hi all,
After getting, quite frankly, fed up with being told that an American case manager would call me, I got hold of the UK tech support over the phone, and ended up dealing with the manager of one of the departments. Within that time, I've had it taken away for looking at, and from what I've been told, its had a variety of components replaced.

What I really think is happening here, is that HP's general notebook design is flawed.

Due to budget parts (AMD + Broadcom) generating a lot of heat, I'm going to assume that the internal temperature gets outside normal operating ranges, and this causes damage to the internal components over a reasonable period of time. Of course, this depends on individual use, however, which is why this is happening at different times per person.
I can say my laptop had a decent use, and thats why it occured within 6 months.

But, if your wireless has seized up, dont be tempted to think that is all that is going to happen, as my laptop wouldn't even get past the POST (power-on self-test) which indicates a severe problem.

My notebook has been in for repair TWICE now, and according to HP's warranty system, if it reoccurs after this (overheating is my current problem), I'm due a replacement. And I'll be asking for Intel. I advise you do the same.

I have the Presario F572US. I bought it in August 2007, and Merry Christmas -- the wireless capability went AWOL just a day or two ago.

I also used the chat session and was told to change the BIOS and reinstall the driver.

Needless to say, that didn't work. My light stays orange and the wireless adapter doesn't register in Windows, nor does the HP Wireless Assistant in the Control Panel work.

I even did a total system rebuild with reformating the hard drive and reinstalling everything as it was when I left the store.

I'm thinking of going to buy a wirless USB adapter (less than $50) to fix this situation.

I'm not mailing in my computer for weeks to get it fixed since it's clearly a hardware failure.

Hi,

I am from Turkey, Istanbul

Shame on me, I was a proud owner of a dv6148eu, promoting HP, pavilion series and my own laptop.

My machine always had problems, that i would not like to see, it gets to hot that the altec lansing speaker cover lost its shape becouse of heat, the power button must agree with you to start the computer, if it's in its good day, the battery lasts for 30 mins? from the first day i have bought it, the fan never turns off, producing more sound than my desktop pc?

and finally my broadcom wireless is gone, as been told many times by other users.

I have the F.3D bios.

I could make the wireless device appear two times after it has vanished, using the remove battery and power cord, press power button wait 20 secs and turn on with just AC power, but now none of the methods mentioned work again

I have called HP Support in Turkey, told them about this thread and these issues, they insisted on making me reinstall drivers pathetically, as they have no information about this issue and this thread.

I am in warranty period and will bring it to service tomarrow, and probably wait for 15 to 30 days, and get it back with nothing changed, the wireless will work for some weeks i guess and then disappear again, or they will replace the mainboard and some stuff and then the wireless device will disappear in some months till my warranty ends.

I have never seen this much unstable machine before, i am so disappointed

I just purchased a dv9600 servies, and have been told that the hardware issues that caused these problems have been addressed in this model. I am not convinced, so bought the Vendor's service plan on top of the Manufacturer's warrantee, just in case.
It does not seem to be running hot at all, but I'm being very careful with it. Maybe I'll have some luck for once in my life.

In response to Helen Abel in the UK, try:

Dave Thompson
HP Customer Care
Direct line: 0191 4935307
e-mail: dcvc_emea_en@mail.support.hp.com

In fact, I'd advise everyone in the UK with this problem to contact Dave who was very helpful.

My laptop was collected for repair by HP today, and I expect they will replace the motherboard. This is the second laptop (dv6152eu, AMD processor, Broadcom wireless card) I've had with the same problems as everyone else. The first was bought from John Lewis in Newcastle in January 2007 who replaced it with another manufacturer's equivalent model in December 2007 after it had been back to HP for repair twice - the same wireless problem occurred after the motherboard was replaced. I showed the store manager the HP Service Enhancement Warranty because of the wireless problem and he immediately offered the replacement - great customer service!

The second laptop was bought from the HP online store in February 2007, and after several calls to HP in South Africa, I finally got the contact details in the UK above. I've requested a replacement equivalent model under the UK Sale of Goods Act 1979 (amended) as the laptop isn't 'fit for purpose' however, HP have the right to attempt repair initially.

I don't have a lot of confidence that replacing the motherboard is a permanent fix based on mine and others' experiences. In fact, the HP South African employee who called to arrange the collection for repair couldn't understand why HP aren't just replacing these models as he's dealing with this issue all the time. Apparently, the support for this problem has been transferred from India to South Africa for some reason.

Anyway, I'll post again with the outcome of my 'repair'.

How's this for service?

Please see my previous message above (Dec 30).

The laptop was picked up on Dec 24. and just got it back. Parts replaced: Hard drive. Other: OS software restored. On the same sheet of paper a statement "Your system passed diagnostic testing after all repairs were made".

Well guess what? #1. No wireless (not even in the device manager) #2. Monitor had the same problem that it did when it went in.

Now, if this unit passed diagnostics, how was it tested? They turned it on for 2 seconds to see the lights lite up and shut it down? Or maybe the UPS driver stole the wireless card? And I got this wonderfull "service" for a cost of $455.

Now I have no way of telling if the HD was at fault or due to overheating, the controller corrupted the data. Yes the HD was acting up at the end but the external monitor / wireless prolems were reported months earlier. The drive was not returned to me. Replacing a drive is not rocket science. I could have picked one up for under $100 and stuck it in myself.

Well no more diagnostics or calls for the techies. Now I have the pleasure of waiting for a call from a "Case Manager". They have a bit of a backglog (no kidding) so it will take from 3 to 5 business days.

I just don't get it. HP knows what the problem is. They charge 1/2 the price of a new machine for repairs and it comes back not working, despite of "Passing the diagnostics". Go figure.

Just to chime in here since I've seen several DV2xxx series users report problems, I have a DV2210us that got the wireless problem and occasionally it won't even boot, no bios prompts et al.

So far I had no problems, just made a call to the normal number and they immediately said I had a motherboard issue and would send a box out. Got it the next day and shipped it off the same day.

They told me I could keep my HD Battery and all accessories. I had just downloaded from my camera and deleted the photo's from the camera when the thing quit. I didn't want to risk losing them, they had no problems with me keeping it.

I too apparently have an affected laptop (V6110). I contacted HP because my clock was freezing when the laptop was turned off then resumed again when the power was restored. My first resort was to update the BIOS, the new BIOS kept the fan on all the time, the previous one cycled it. This immediately set off alarm bells that there must be some thermal issue they are trying to resolve so I now have a 9 month old laptop that is probably 4-5 years old due to accellerated aging!

Anyway, this didn't fix my issue so I measured the voltage of the CMOS battery as 914mV (should be 3V). The HP rep told me they would send a new battery. I got an email a few days later to say that they couldn't ship to Canada and to contact HP Canada. They refuse to ship the battery and want me to return the laptop.

I gave them the go ahead and just looked at the ticket they opened. They have labelled it "APOLLO AND ATLANTIS MOTHERBOARD ISSUE". I guess all returns are being treated as this and upgraded accordingly. Let's hope so as I've been unknowingly been running a thermally compromised board since new. I will mark the motherboard to see if they do in fact change it.

my HP dv2000 series DV2313 also has the same problem...and from what I gather online, a lot of other people have the same wireless problem too. The wireless adapter starts sometimes but only after I restart the laptop like 20 times.

The screen also doesn't seems to work sometimes but not as often as the wireless adapter.

On my dv9225 the screen went blank and the wireless card / switch stoped functioning.

I have contact HP and am still waiting on the box to be sent to me. I believe mine may have occured as a result of a bios upgrade. I got the same symptions as others. When I boot up I get one long beep and 2 short beeps. According to some research I did on the internet this mean that the video card is now defective.

I have an extended warrenty through a third party but they will not tough it until HP has had there chance to fix the advisory bulliten.

I guess we will see how HP handles it.

They took my order sent the box, said they did work they never performed and then scratched the heck out of my laptop.

They were very nice about it and blamed me for them not doing the work properly. They never even turned on the wireless, I used a witness mark and guess what, it never moved.

Now tell me, how can HP test something if they don't even bother to turn it on? Not to mention they failed to replace the keyboard that had problems. My serial number in the bios is the same, wouldn't it be different if they replaced they motherboard like they said they did? To me it looks more like they replaced the wireless card and claimed they did the other.

So now, it's not fixed, same problems, only now it's got big scratches all over the top case. I wonder who on Earth taught their techs to work on things. In my field which is electronics repair this is not acceptable, in fact if we damage something we will replace it or give them cash towards the damages to make it right.

I'm pretty upset at how they've done this repair job. They just don't get it, I only wanted my laptop repaired.

The same story as nearly everyone else, broadcom adapter/wireless assistant unavailable, no blue light, always amber. Happened overnight, 3 days ago, laptop is only 5 months old, w/very delicate use. Tried many of the troubleshooting techniques listed in this forum and others. Nothing seems to work for me. Safe Mode will occassionaly boot w/wifi, but usually after an hours worth of attempts.

I'm running Vista Ultimate, so there is no Bios upgrade available on HPs site for me to download, only Premium, Home etc., not Ultimate.

I decided to contact HP support, the support line eventually connected me with a female, who sounded to have an India/Asian accent. She was very polite and easy to speak with. I explained nearly all my attempts to fix the problem, plus the issue of not being able to upgrade the bios for my OS. Put on hold several times and then they finally decided to offer me the 2-week free turn-around repair and will ship me a box. I have to fax in proof of purchase etc. I've been down this route before with my previous HP notebook. It was a long wait, and they had used sticky tape to adhere notes to the cover, which ended up wrecking the appearance. Anyway, good luck to us all. I'll keep you posted w/my outcome on my Pavilion 9225.

Hello,

same Problem here with my Pavillion dv6266eu. I´m from Germany and bought my notebook back in july 2007. My Wlan disappeared 2 weeks ago - after figuring out this is a wide spread problem i called german hp-support. i asked if there is a solution that really fixes the problem: "yes. send it to our repair service." whenever i mention that the us-support officially announced this as a manufacturing error they didn´t seem to know about this. So after hours of talking to incompetent people and a whole day waiting for ups to pick up my notebook with noone showing up i got a new date for tomorrow.
Now after reading all your posts in this thread i´m wondering if there is anyone, whose notebook was fixed after being "repaired" by hp-service? if not...why should i even ask them for help??
good luck to us all!

I've found how to fix the problem with the wireless cards. It's really a simple fix. It will also require HP to offer a software update to fix the problem. I would be more then happy to work with HP to help them find and fix the problem. They can contact me to discuss compensation. I am asking for compensation because of all the trouble I had to endure with HP's tech support group. They have no clue of what they are doing. HP's products are high quality. But HP's support group will eventually take the company down. Remember that company called Gateway!!!!

Well, I bite the bullet, in fear of my HP dv6140 get worse, finally contacted the support. Tech support was very friendly and acknowledged the problem quickly, asked me to send in my laptop. The machine was sent to HP and came back in one week looking decent, no harddrive reformat as I have requested and no scratches. The paper indicate problem was reproduced and motherbroad replaced.

BUT, my wireless problem exists just as before. It seems to be better when I first boot up, blue light and "excellent" connection. But it soon get downhill from there, the connection goes up and down as reported by Windowns, and even when sometimes the connection was reported "excellent", no packets (or few packets, slower than dial-up) can be passed. I am sure my wireless router is good because my other HP dv6135 works great. (It has the Intel chipset).

Now I don't know what to do. I heard some reports that problem did not get fixed after multiple attempts. Seriously, is there any one whose laptop was fixed after being serviced? Please post to give us some hope.

But when I got it back and it was slow the case manager asked me to reinstall windows to see if it corrected it so I did and after that my LCD quit working so I sent it back again today. The case manager said that if it was not fixed this time they would replace my machine. We'll see.

To all who's warranty has expired or your computer is NOT on the extended warranty list who have the EXACT same problems as the machines on that extended warranty list, you have to write an email to HP or call his office. That is how I got my machine fixed, (I hope.. for how long, we'll see).
My machine lost the wireless, poof! Gone, NADA.. no where to be found, not in the device manager, no where. It was a week out of warranty and the Tech told me I was out of luck. My machine is a Compaq Presario V3000 AMD/Broadcom and is not even listed on the extended warranty. I then found this thread. I called back only to have the same result. They tried to sell me an extended warranty that wouldn't cover the wifi, but would give me phone support for a year... Yeah, right. I then found the CEO's email and wrote of my problems. I got an email back and called the number listed, and after a half an hour or so, a box was being shipped to my house to have the mother board replaced. It is called, APOLLO AND ATLANTIS MOTHERBOARD ISSUE.

DO NOT LET THIS GO!!!! There is a problem and you have to call HP to resolve it. Can you imagine what it would do to their stock if the world found out that 1 in 10 of their notebooks were defective??? Can you imagine a auto manufacturer selling cars that were defective? Come on HP.

This thread has really got me spooked. I ordered a dv9700z through the State Employee Purchase Program on government.hp.com, for my personal usage.

But now I see all these wireless issues. How can we be certain this is fixed on later models? There are people posting here with the same problems, that didn't have the models that were listed in the "HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement". However, the problem does seem to be more specific to the AMD based laptops.

I ordered the following:

HP Pavilion dv9700z customizable Notebook PC
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TK-57 (1.9 GHz, 512KB L2 Cache)
17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!!
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M
FREE Upgrade to HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone!!
Wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth
160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
FREE Upgrade to LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support!!
No TV Tuner w/remote control
High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

But now that I hear about all this, I am thinking of canceling this order and geting a dv9700t instead with the Core2Duo chip. Problem is if I get the 2.0 Core2Duo it's over $200 more versus this order. But if it saves me from problems it's $200 well spent.

ARGH!!!

What to do, what to do.

Brons2,

I was in the same boat except that it is already too late for me. I bought a Compaq F572 with AMD Turion X2 TL-56 and Broadcom wireless in Nov-07.

I have always thought the machine runs pretty hot and in Dec-07 I discovered this thread. It looks like HP really has an inherent design problem (perhaps something to do with heat dissipation). I upgraded to the latest BIOS which keeps the fan going constantly and that does make the machine cooler and hopefully mitigate against the overheating problem. Obviously there is now a bit more noise with the fan going all the time.

If I knew about this thread, I would not have bought an AMD/Broadcom based machine. However, it was too late for me to return the notebook (The store only has a 7 day return policy). I dislike spending good money and getting a lousy, unreliable product. I suspect the problem is much more wide spread than the DV6000 and DV9000 series of notebooks and I would not be surprised the same motherboard design is used in other series (common practice).

It is also disappointing that HP does not seem to want to step up to do a world recall of the product for fixing.

Hello All,

I m in the same boat as u all are...
I have Pavillion tx1000 Notebook (AMD Turion - Broadcom Wireless).
Bought in last April from Tokyo, Japan.

I m facing the same missing Wireless problem since last month. I tried all the solutions that are provided by you all in this thread & similar threads, but nothing worked for me.

My notebook is under warranty, I talked with HP support team (HP Japan). So I faced lil problem talking to them in Japanese (Don't know much Japanese). But they are very helpful. They said me to send my box to them. But I m not sure what they will do with it, coz most of the users are facing the same problem after motherboard/wireless card replacement also.

So instead of fighting & wasting my time, I bought USB Wireless Adaptor(Buffalo) temporarily. It works fine.

But as Christopher Brown said, this is probably driver conflict problem.
So I want to try it if it works. Christopher can u tell me how to solve this issue?

Why does Hp Brazil exist?

What's the solution with usb adapter?

I have a dv2138xx (AMD) and everything worked flawlessly for a bit over a year (running XP then Vista) then the Broadcom wireless stopped working and not being recognized.

I've read all the suggested ways of "fixing" this problem and none of them worked...

Upgrading the BIOS, install/re-install drivers, re-seating the card, take out the power and press the on/off button, re-seating the memory, reset BIOS to default setting, clean install using the recovery disks and non of them worked, sliding the wireless switch back and forth didn't work either. Multiple e-mails to support ended up with them not responding anymore. My solution for now is that I got a USB wireless (d-link N) adapter and works 100%.

Spending my hard earned dollars I would expect a quality product.

*Update*

Got my laptop back today (2 days late of expected delivery)

The laptop was delivered to the wrong address by UPS, and luckily my neighbors were kind enough to call me and let me know it had arrived.

Anyways, The problem was able to be duplicated at HP, so they replaced the Motherboard, updates the BIOS and Re-Imaged my hard drive (which i asked if was possible not to, I put all my stuff on another hard drive anyways).

Turned it on and everything looks fine. No scratches, working wireless and sound card works fine.

I was told this computer was not on the extended warranty, so I will be screwed when this happens again in 7-10 months, hopefully HP will have a fix by then.

Good luck to anyone else, but really this doesn't solve anything, it was a quick fix and that is all it is.

My dv6152eu laptop was collected on 2 January for repair, with an estimated return date of 11 January (disappearing wireless, overheating, blank screen, poor battery life etc.). When I rang to enquire about progress, HP advised that my laptop had been tested, and noted to be working 'fine'. I explained that the wireless problem was intermittent, so it was put on test again for 24 hours. Suprise suprise, they are now replacing (in their words) 'the system board, processor, wireless LAN card, memory chips, and the heat sink fan module'. a total of 11 parts(!?) according to their telephone advisor who admitted he wasn't a technical guy. He also admitted HP contract out their service function in the UK, and could give no ETA for the fan heat sink assembly. I advised that this was unacceptable, but it perhaps indicates a general problem in the supply of this part.

This was the third time I'd rang about the return of my laptop, so I called Customer Care to enquire about the possibility of a new replacement laptop, or a product recall. This is the second HP Pavilion laptop I've had - the first failed again after the motherboard was replaced, so I have no confidence in the repair 'solution'. The e-mail response from HP Customer Care is as follows:

"To confirm our phone conversation from today. If a customer's laptop/desktop is still at the repair centre after 28 days then HP would offer a good will gesture of an HP product by way of apology. If the unit is still at the repair centre after a total of 56 days then HP will offer to either buy back or replace the customer's unit if there is no ETA on the repair."

Now, do I really want another HP product, or should I hope that the supply chain for the fan heat sink assembly breaks down completely? Tough choice.

i too have a dv9000 series with the problems you all seem to be experiencing. the laptop was taken back by hp on 29/12/07 for repair, 3 1/2 weeks on still waiting. apparently the heatsink fan is on back order with no eta for when it will arrive. i am also told that there is a world wide a shortage on HP components.i have asked for this to be escalated. hp support and the repair centre are sending me around in circles and to top it Customer Service refuse to speak to me. its so disappointing to fork out £800 hard earned cash on a product which is faulty from manufacture.

If Hp agrees to replace your notebook, ask them to replace it with an Intel processor, as the motherboards with the Intel processors have not been having this issue.

I've been experiencing intermittent wifi for the past 8 months or so. It got worse the other day. Whenever I would plug in the ac adapter it would drop my wifi connection and I couldn't get it back until I unplugged the ac adapter. After searching the hp support site I came across the infamous "APOLLO AND ATLANTIS MOTHERBOARD ISSUE". 20 days to go on my 1 year warrenty so I at least don't have to worry about getting this done outside the normal warrenty. I have shipped out the pc to hp yesterday. It will be interesting to see how it goes. I'll report back when it returns.

Thank you very much for your help Christopher Brown.

But in my case it didn't work. But I found the exact problem.
The problem is due to conflict between NVIDIA network controller dirver & Broadcom driver.
I maually changed driver for NVIDIA network controller to Broadcom network controller (Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Controllers > NVIDIA network controller > right click & update driver > I will chose driver by my own > uncheck show compitible drivers checkbox > on left side select Broadcom > on right side select Broadcom chipset network controller > click next), and restarted my laptop.

And the WLAN found... wow.... But as the Broadcom network controller driver is not compitible with NVIDIA network controller I couldn't connect to my wireless network. So, I think if NVIDIA network controller driver is replaced with some another compitible dirver, WLAN should work. I am doing R&D on this. Will get back with solution.

Good news for a change...

I received my repaired pc yesterday.
So I mailed it out last Wed evening and got it back the following Tuesday afternoon.

I definitely got a new board (there's a new port on the left side).
The sheet they returned had a check mark beside Wireless PCA and also the DC board.

The system date/time was off alot (set to 2006). Windows Live Care also got confused so I had to unistall/reinstall it. But no a big deal.

Wireless is now working well for me so far.

H. Hinrichsen,

My instinct says that you probably should stick with the new BIOS and let the fan runs constantly.

HP released the new BIOS to ALL AMD/Broadcom based machines in mid Dec-07. The BIOS update has been classified as a critical update. I can only guess that the constantly running fan is to keep your system cool or you risk frying your motherboard again.

If you are really keen, you can try speedfan (Google search) to control or shut down the fan. But as I said, you risk frying your motherboard!

Unfortunately that means more noise and shorter battery life. I am in the same boat and I am not a happy man but it is too late for me to return the notebook to the store.

Hi. Just to follow up in my story. My pavilion also crashes with the wifi built in adaptor. That happened on Dec 14th. I sent it on Jan 2nd through fry's electronics (the place I bought the computer from) and they sent it to HP. Fortunately (and I have to say this) I received yesterday in like record time, just yesterday they called me and I went to pick it up. I returned the loan laptop the store gave me (that is an excellent option nowadays with these malfunctioning laptops).
My wi-fi blue light adaptor worked fine. HP stated that they had to replace the motherboard (which based on this forum I though they were going to) and seems to works just fine until a discover another issue. NOW ONE USB PORT DOES NOT WORK! apparently I am assuming they didn't weld it back into the motherboard because when I put some adaptor in it (let's say a usb flash drive) looks kinda loose and shifty.
So now I have to take it back to fry's and demand another repair (one month approx.)
I just wonder... Does HP knows something at all about the QA/QC? I cant believe this.. anyways.. I guess now I have wi-fi it is better that working without a usb port..

Just make sure after you receive your laptop that everything is working properly..

My unit (in for its third excusion) was shown according to FedEx records to have been signed for by HP on 1/23, but HP only acknowledged they had received it on 1/29 (where was it for 6 days???) Initially I was given an repair date estimate of 2/6, and a diagnosis of "apollo and atlantis motherboard issue." Now there is NO date shown regarding an estimated completion date, AND the problem has been changed to 'service enhancement program.' Oh, and in the midst of this I received a random shipping box which no one could explain...

I too just sent my notebook in for repairs reguarding this issue. Less than a month later the problem returns. I had also reported that this issue had caused my battery to go bad and that my screen hinges were having issues do to what seems like heat from that processor. After the notebook runs for awhile the hinges pop really bad when trying to close the laptop. Neither the screen issue nor the battery were fixed at all. They claim that they replaced the motherboard but if they did it wasn't with a very good replacement. I started the processes of getting the repair dont on January 3rd and it is now having the same problem that it did before and it is Feb 5th.(Not to mention they didn't fix everything last time) I am a college student and a full time software programmer in Research and Development at my company so I need my notebook! If the notebook is not replaced or I am not given an extended warranty and a new repair of all of the issues I reported to them I will sell this laptop and never purchase another HP/Compaq. The specs on the notebook are great and I love the imprint finish. The laptop is comfortable under your hands and the screen is very crisp. AMD X2 Processor with 2gb of ram. All and all this would be a wonderful notebook if it would just WORK!

C.Morris,

HP AMD/Broadcom based machines are failing like flies due to the overheating motherboard issue. It is really unfortunate as I really think HP should step up by issuing a general recall on all its AMD notebooks.

One thing to note is did you update to the latest BIOS which keeps the fan going constantly to keep the machine cool. This might prevent future failures but who knows ...!

I used to have an office Compaq Pentium-M laptop which was a workhouse for a few years. Based on that track record, I bought a AMD based HP notebook at the end of 07 for home use and I am now really stuck!

To all that follow this post, my issue has been resolved.

I finally got in contact with a Sr. Case Manager and he finally offered to replace my laptop due to the poor custoemr servie I had receved, and due to the product being so new and failing to the point of needed a new mother board.

My DV2226CA was replaced at my request by a DV6642CA whcih is a intel machine, a little bigger screen so not quite as portable, but still nice, runs cool and fast. so far no wireless issues at all, it also has the Intel Pro wireless card. I was very happy with the way in which HP finally resolved my issue. They were evene able to make the exchnage within 5 biz days.

Thank you HP for standing by your company and product.

I will report back in a few months about how my laptop is working, but the intel machines seem to be problem free.

They are replacing mine too. The case manager told me that they usually have a three strikes rule. It has to be sent for repair three times. But since mine was sent in twice and they blatentley disregaurded the things that were on my service ticket and failed to install the drivers for the new motherboard both times she was not gonna put me through that again. Also she knows I use my laptop for school which is a very expensive on-line school so they are replacing it after two repairs. Just got word yesterday the replacement was approved and it is being built as we speak. An all Intel system at that. Told her I didnt want anything to do with the AMD Broadcom Nvidia combo anymore.

I had additional issues beyond my wireless card. I found that HP will work with you and that the service was good, truth be told now that i'm using an intel based machine, still has the nvidia so don't blame nvidia. I'm happy and my new laptop runs great, other issues like the keyboard problems people have mentioned and lcd seem to all be gone with the switch. I wish you all luck with your troubles and I feel your pain. All that I can offer is not to give up, HP did stand by their product in the end (with me anyways) and that if you can get an intel based notebook. My bottom fan now blows cool air, versus the hot air blowing from the bottom of the AMD machine, and the back of the LCD no longer gets hot, and the keyboard now has a nice tactile feel to it.

truth be told, if your going the repair route, I would buy a USB wireless adapter, 40 dollars and it wroekd for me, I would wait to get it repaired until your LCD fails or something bigger than the wifi. HP is super backed up with this issue right now. Also I bought mine at future shop and the store I bought it from said they would have worked with me if I had brought it in (I think they would have made me buy their warrenty) but yet again saves all that mailing and shipping business.

Hi,

Read your HP warranty statement carefully. It will most likely say that the warranty is only valid in the country where it is bought. Absurd as laptops are meant to be on the go and that may mean internationally.

Your best case is that you have international warranty cover. Failing that, talk nicely but firmly to HP Venezuela and hope that they will fix it for you. Worst case is they will ask you to ship it back to the US for fixing which could be an expensive business.

Utterly dissapointed with HP with regards to this issue. To make matter worse, my warranty just ran out early this month and the laptop has never been moved around since day one. Looks spanking brand new too.

A Good Fix!! but not complete..Hi I have an hp dv6000 model and have been having this problem for a while now(sometimes i get the blue light and all ok but most of the time its that annoying red one). After using a usb wireless plugin(works well) for a while and eventually snapping it! i discovered this fix for the internal wifi...
1. get the latest bios update(not sure if this is needed or not but i did this first)
2.download the broadcom driver which should be on hp site.
3. install and then reboot.
4. the driver should install and hopefully you get the blue light come on.
5. if its on then we in business now for the important bits.
6. go to control panel, then power options.
7.select high performance in power plan.
8.go to choose what power buttons do and select shut down, do nothing and shut down from top to bottom in battery and powered boxes. save changes.
9. go back and select change when computer sleeps option. in the screen select never in both battery and powered options. save changes.
10. i have my turn display off set to 5mins battery and 20mins powered but dont think this matters.
11. Bingo.. i havent lost the blue light for 3 weeks and counting!!
just shut down as usual or even just close the lid and it shuts down and every time you start it that blue light appears!!
not a total fix i know but it works and no longer dissapears at random.
No good if your a battery saver into using it unplugged but the battery life is crap anyway!!
Good Luck.

I am very upset to hear that only the Pavilion dv60000/dv9000 and presario models are included in this extended service program. My laptop is a DV2000z that I bought less than two years ago, and I have the same problem (wireless card disappears). Like everybody else in this forum, I've followed the recomendations from the Tech Support team, but found no solution. And now, HP wants to take another $400 from my pocket to fix their own poorly-designed product. I can't believe that these laptops cost above $1000 and last less than two years. Terrible.

RE: Broadcom WIFI card not showing up in my device manager

HP tx1115nr

Today is the second day of what I feel may very well become a long drawn out ordeal...
Yesterday my wifi card ceased working for no apparent reason.  I called technical support and was connected to someone in India who was very hard to understand.  After following someone who must have been using a flowchart problem solving manual, a new wifi card was sent to me.  I will say the delivery was fast.  I received it this morning.  Well, I installed the new card and it did not work...so...back to technical support.  The tech was again Indian and even harder to understand.  This time I was told to restore my laptop to factory settings.  I hungup and did so.  The reset would not initiate because it detected an unknown wifi card...SO, reinstalled the original card which had not been picked up yet.  The reset to factory settings then worked...and what do you know...my wifi card worked!  All was well with the world until it came to installing all 45 updates and drivers that the computer said I needed to install.  My wifi card ceased working again.  SO, I called tech support again.  He walked me through his flowchart, in broken english I might add, and finally determined that we had done everything that could be done, including reseating the wifi card, restoring to previous save point, reinstalling the broadcom driver, resetting to factory settings and so forth.  He then proceed to tell me the wifi card was at fault...I patiently explained to him, again, it worked until the updates were installed.  I then asked to talk to his supervisor, who spoke worse english than he, and was told I had two options, to uninstall updates one at a time, which at 45 new updates would take FOREVER or to join a conference call with Microsoft since it appeared to be a software conflict.  I agreed to the conference call.  I held as my previous Indian buddy tried to connect me to Microsoft support, and after many screeching keypresses and various hold messages my call was dropped...  I called back and got a NEW guy who had passable english skills and after reexplaining the story and racking up a total call time of 2 hours at my expense tried to call microsoft support again...this time we reached software activation.  This lady informed us via our conference call that she was the wrong person to talk to.  She could give us a number to call but could not transfer us herself...  At this point I sighed and told the tech I could no longer endure this today and made sure of my service ticket number (which if ANY employee of HP is reading this and feeling sorry for me yet is :8008773752).  So now, after surfing the web for 6 hours and reading forums on various sites included HP forums, I am starting to figure out that most likely this is an issue with the AMD and Broadcom build combination...I wonder how many times I will have to send my laptop in and if I do how long the repairs will last, since I apparently only have 50 days or so of warrantly left, oh and yeah...the first nice tech guy I talked to was VERY PERSISTANT in trying to sell me an extended warranty.  This is my business laptop and had cost me two days of productivity already.  This is probably my 5th HP computer product purchase, not including various HP printers... Wish me luck tomorrow, I go to bed so that I may wake to fight the good fight once again.

I have Compaq Presario V6000 with Intel Celeron, which died on March 1st, 2008 with all symptoms of "Apollo and Atlantis motherboard issue" (LEDs are lighted up, system doesn't boot, no messages appear on a screen).

I purchased it in Dec.2006 (14 months ago), so it's currently out of standard warranty. Both customer care and their supervisor refused to provide me with free repair under "Enhancement Warranty", stating, that part number for this model is not in their "recall" list. They mentioned, they only accept models with AMD processors, not Intel.

I sent an e-mail to CEO via web form. Waited for 3 days with no answer. Then I called CEO office (Pam). She checked it and then only kept telling me, that level was already elevated, she is not technical person, and technical experts were already given me refusal.

Questions to HP Total Care:
1) Why do you refuse to admit, that other models are affected as well ? Just look at different threads...
2) What is the difference of overheating between Celerons and AMDs ?

To get your computer to boot, try turning it off, remove power cord, and battery, and with those out, press and hold the power button for a few seconds, and then hook up battery, and/or power, and turn the computer on.

HELLO ALL,

TRY THIS....

1. Uninstall Broadcom 802.11 Driver from control pannel.
2. Remove the folder named "Braodcom" from Program Files folder.
3. Open c:\windows\system32\driver & search for BCMWLxxx.sys. Make it read only.
4. Restart laptop.

This is not 100% perfect solution.
But it worked for me.
Atleast try once.....

You DV owners are a bit more lucky than ZD8000 series owners as HP did not ignore your problems like they did with the ZD8000's. This series had some major failures due to the extreme heat generated by the processors which would eventually fry the charging circuit and the graphic's card, let alone the display problems. HP even shut down the forums where ZD owners were complaining about the bad design of the product and the lack of support from HP, or should I say the total absence of support. It's just amazing that in a newer series, HP is facing again heat caused issues. They have not learned from the previous experince. It is really sad that people invest in what they think are good machines to end up having so much problems.

So far HP has not shown any evidence of having a true fix. I have to jump through the hoops each day to get the wireless to turn on.

My monitor is splitting accross the bottom, and accross the left side. I now use a screw driver to close the lid so that it properly closes.

For those having trouble with your monitor not turning on, turn the computer off, open the lid all the way back, turn the computer on, if you still don't have your monitor, leaving your monitor all the way open, press fn, and f4 at the same time, wait a few seconds, and if no monitor, click again, and wait a few seconds. It can take up to 6 such click and waits for it to work.

Also the monitor is more likely to turn on if you restart in safe mode.

For those that can't get the wirless to turn on, reinstall the wireless drivers, turn off the computer, remove power cord, remove battery, press and hold power button for several seconds, replace battery, replace power cord, turn power on, press repetedly quickly f8 to go into safe mode with networking, go fully into safe mode with networking, wait 5 minutes, restart computer.

I've got the same problem with my V6107US. I wanted to just go out and get a replacement WiFi card for 20-30 dollars before I found this thread.
But here's a question to you nice folks who have gotten back your fixed (presumably) laptops. Does HP wipe the hard drive or do they just replace this and that? I really don't want to have to reinstall everything from the start... its just too much of a pain. I have a gazillion programs in there.

A sad statistic of the rent-to-own company I work for:

    in stock broken %
F572US   40   12    30,0
V6107US  35   6 17,1
DV6105US 35   5 14,3
V6210US  95   9 9,5
V6310US  25   1 4,0
     230      33    14,3

All the broken ones have the WiFi or related issue (nor booting or screen problems).
F572US has the highest failure rate and is not covered under he extended warranty....

As a consumer you don't really expect your stuff to be in that unfortunate percentage but when you buy in large quantities you clearly see that the chances of your single computer being of that bad batch are astounding.

I have the problem with my DV2312US.
Let me share my story. As I called tech support the told me the now about the issue and will sent me a box. As I got the box, they was no return sticker. I asked for a new one I got 5 days later. So I called on Feb 21st and you received the notebook on feb 29st.

Today april 3rd I am still waiting to have back, and every 10 days a HP employees calls me and read his paper that says that he/she is very sorry and HP appologies for the delay however I will get my laptop back in 10 days.

Still waiting for the next reader, it's suppose to be april 7th. And I think it will happen again because the status is still "wainting for parts"

Even if it is covered by the warranty is their any time limit to fix it or can it take 6 months. My wife need this one for her work. I better buy a new one but that's a shame for a 5 months old computer.

What do you suggest shall i look for a new HP or an other Brand?

Rick, keep in mind that eventually you will have a dead computer.

See the other forums on wirelsee disapearing.

Here is the instructions to get the wireless to work:

Reinstall the wireless drivers, turn off the computer, remove power cord, remove battery, press and hold power button for several seconds, replace battery, replace power cord, turn power on, press repeatedly quickly f8 to go into safe mode with networking, go fully into safe mode with networking, wait 5 minutes, restart computer.

Often just doing the safe mode method will work, if that does not work, I do the battery, power, then safe mode part. But when those simpler methods don't work, the above set of steps are most likely to work.

Yes ... wireless not working. I'm sending it to HP tomorrow. Looks like others have done this with mixed results. I don't know what else to do. Normally I am pretty happy with HP products but this laptop definitely hasn't been up to snuff. Maybe most of the problem is Vista and not the HW. My sense is that products are getting cheaper and cheaper because the companies are trying so hard to cut costs. I just heard someone the other day who was complaining about the piece, they got from Dell. I guess everybody is doing it.

One of the strange things for me was I could never get the driver to update. I tried the update in Vista and it didn't do anything. I tried getting various softpaqs from HP support and from the website. It would seem like the install process for the softpaq was working, but then I would go back into device mgr and look at the driver and it would always be the same version as it was before. Also I did an ipconfig in command.com and it said something about "media not connected. Even for the NIC, although I **could** connect to a network using the NIC. Made me think the wireless card was probably dead. Or maybe something bigger.

I have a dv9033cl (Costco version) that has been great ever since I figured out how to make my wireless work reliably (at least until my left-side hinge started binding and the plastic lid cracking from the security lock hole up the edge of the LCD display panel recently, but that's another issue covered at www .notebookhingecrack .com ; it still functions fine for now).

From the time I purchased this unit last January up until last October I had very unreliable connections that would last anywhere from only a few seconds to sometimes a few hours. Eventually my front panel status light would change from blue to amber despite the Windows Device Manager saying it was still enabled and "This device is functioning properly".

I went around and around with "technical support" having me install / uninstall/reinstall / disable/enable the wireless drivers; update the HP Wireless Assistant; clear/reset all the settings for my wireless link which would be lost every time; reset/configure my Linksys router (which was working fine for my other machines), etc. Very frustrating!

Finally after several months of this they agreed it might be "hardware" and that they would send me a replacement internal wireless card to try.

Over the next several days I kept having to reboot my computer to get a few minutes (if lucky) of connection time before the dreaded Wireless Amber Light would come on (sort of like the BSOD Blue Screen of Death).

Then, one time, I happened to notice that the HP Wireless Assistant indicated that the wireless was disabled at a time when it was actually working. This was the opposite of the usual scenario (actually NOT working when the "assistant" said it was, or both Device Manager and "assistant" agreeing, etc.).

So, thinking something was screwy (and maybe dependent on the load order of things), and knowing that I could always reload the HP Wireless Assistant with the latest available download, I totally uninstalled/removed it.

Wow! I've had nothing but reliable connections ever since! And frankly, I don't really see the point of the "assistant" over Windows built-in wireless utility other than to provide yet another system tray icon and more bloat.

Hope this helps someone. Maybe it will help HP avoid no-doubt expensive and possibly unnecessary replacement of perfectly good hardware in some cases.

My two cents experience. Try it, it can't hurt.

Wow ... great advice. I just sent my unit in this morning, but if this problem should happen again (or probably even if it doesn't), I'll uninstall the wireless assistant. FWIW, this problem only started occurring for me within the past few weeks. Who knows ... maybe one of the Windows updates had some kind of screwy interaction with the wireless assistant. I've seen stranger things! Thanks!

Rick, The reinstall will not cause an immediate change in your wireless operation. It should however ask you if you want to replace the files that are already there.

Then follow the instructions that I gave you to get the wireless to work.

Manley, It appears that you have a different situation. With most of the other people it is a true hardware problem. The motherboard is bad, and can't properly handle a power load. It also prevents the computer user from being able to use two hard drives. In fact my motherboard crashed one of my hard drives, and now will only turn on when it wants to. I'm sending it in to be repaired.

Wayne, are you talking about updating the drivers? If you update the driver and reboot the machine, the new driver version should show up in device manager when the system comes back. My version never changed. It was always the same one that came on the machine (I don't remember the version number but the date was May of 2007).

It's not so much an issue of updating the wireless driver, but reinstalling the driver. Often just doing the safe mode trick will be enough to get the wireless to work, but sometimes the driver needs to be reinstalled.

I have a DV6045nr and it has now been in 3 times and they put in a new motherboard and updated the bios. It was bought in August 2006. The wireless went out right away after a month. Sent it in and got it back in a week and it worked for several months and did it again right before the warranty was up. Sent it in again and it took about 3 weeks to get it back. I knew nothing of this problem at that time. It went out again a couple of weeks ago and before I could even call to complain the whole thing went and I had no display. It was no longer under warranty. I did call however and they said no problem, they would fix it and I sent it in and got it back on Friday. I then came across all of this. I had decided to sell this one and get a new one when I got it back. I would like to know if you all think my problems are solved now with them updating my bios and the new motherboard or should I sell it, if possible and look for something else. Will this happen again? They only gave me a 90 day warranty with this.

There were a few folks who were thinking about upgrading the processor on these motherboards and I took the plunge and did it. I had a single core AMD 2 GHz and now I have a dual core AMD 1.9 NOTICEABLY FASTER but battery life is cut in a half. Not that this thing had a great battery life to begin with :)
Anyway, if anyone's been wondering about this, it works. And this is a replacement motherboard following the wireless issue that we've all beel plagued with.
I had the computer for one month after the fix and no issues. I then upgraded the processor, and after 2 months still no issues...

Oh and if you do indeed want to do the upgrade be aware that it is A HUGE PAIN! The whole thing and I mean THE ENTIRE laptop (minus screen of course) has to be taken appart. The processor is in the bottom where the fan is. Label screws... after putting it back together I found about 4-5 extra screws :) Still feels solid so I didn't bother to try and find their home.
FYI, I'm running Vista Home Premium with 2 GB of RAM. ABDOLUTELY NO VISTA ISSUES! I don't know what the fuss is all about...

I'm on my third major repair for this garbage laptop.

This time the service center lied about the repair they did.

The listed repairs were

replaced:

system board
battery
heatsink fan
hard drive

When I turned the laptop on I got literally the same thing I sent it out with.

All of my settings are still there.

If they really replaced the motherboard why am I looking at the exact same desktop wallpaper I sent the laptop out with?

So basically they deliberately lied.

This is strike four already. At what point does this company hold themselves accountable for their horrible product? The hard drive they replaced was the secondary hard drive that didn't even have any issues.

The put a BLATANTLY used battery in this thing that isn't lasting anywhere near as long as a replaced battery should. Its literally faded to the point of being grey instead of black like it's supposed to be.

Not to mention the other problem it went in for, ac adapter failure, hasn't even been fixed.

$1500 + paperweight.

Changing the motherboard does not change the operating system. Windows is the operating system. The motherboard is what starts the computer. It then sends control over to windows.

After reading about half of the comments so far, I thought I would add my personal experience. I purchased 2 of the original dv9000 CTO custom models a couple years back. Everything worked fine for a long time. They originally came with XP media center, as Vista wasn't out yet. I received a free upgrade to Vista Home Premium, so on one of my machines I decided to try it out.

So, I followed the instructions given, updated my bios for "compatibility" with Vista, and installed Vista. Now, my Broadcom wireless adapted randomly works. And when I say randomly, the switch works fine, if I move it over, it turns blue. But 80% of boot-ups, the wireless card isn't detected in the system, as many of you have mentioned. Now here's the funny thing, my other machine still works completely fine! And the 20% of the time the card shows up on this machine, it works fine.

So, all in all, it was after I updated the bios and installed Vista, that my wireless card went on the fritz. Now here's another interesting fact, I wanted 4gb ram support, so I updated the bios on the other machine. The wireless card still works on the 2nd machine every boot up!

So what's the problem? I have no idea, it has something to do with the reformat/OS change/Bios update. Reviewing what I've done so far, updating the bios on both machines, only 1 has the problem. Only 1 machine has Vista which is having the problem. But it can't be Vista specifically, as people have posted having problems with XP. So maybe it "is" bios related, something like.. some old bios versions don't work with XP while the newer bios versions work with XP but not Vista? If Vista handles memory addressing differently then XP, and if different bios versions affect it, it sounds possible to me.

I found on one website, dunno if it's mentioned here, that it could be a hardware resource problem, and to test it, turn off your laptop, remove the power cable, remove the battery, then hold the power button for 30 seconds or so, completely draining the power out of the laptop. Then, plug the laptop back in without putting the battery back in, and boot up the laptop using just AC power. A lot of people found that this miraculously made their wifi card show back up, it did for me too. Something about a hardware conflict between the battery and the wireless adapter. While this is a temporary fix of course and might not be the problem, it might be a step in the right direction rather then messing with hardware replacements. Don't give up on the laptops yet :). As a side note, I just checked my device manager, my wireless card *mysteriously* started working again, go figure. It'll work 'till I reboot again.

And for the record, when I first purchased the laptops in pristine working form, they included: Windows Media Center Edition, TL-60 Athlon dual-core 2ghz, 1GB ram, GeForce 7600, 1680x1050 screen, no webcam, the rest was all basic. 1 machine still works fine, the other (I'm using right now) works fine minus the wireless card randomly popping in and out of existence. The only thing that has been upgraded to this date in both machines, is they now have G.Skill 4GB ram, which works flawlessly in both. So I don't think this is an incompatibility with the processor or anything like that (someone mentioned they thought it was an AMD thing, I'm sure it's just coincidence and more likely the other hardware bundled with the AMD laptops in this series).

@ Shilo E

It's the motherboard that is causing the wireless problem. You mentioned, the bios,,, well the bios is the software that is in the motherboard that runs the motherboard. Eventually the motherboard will kill your computer. The wireless dissapearing is just one of the first symptoms of the upcoming death of the computer.

My Pavilion dv6000 is having wireless issues, just like the original post and everyone else in this and other threads have talked about. However, my P/N is not under the new warranty.

Is there any suggestions as to what I should do next? I rely on my laptop, and would like to get the same treatment as people under the new extended warranty. Or, am I SOL, and need to just pay HP to fix my laptop?

Thanks for the help/suggestions.

I had the same problem with my DV9000's Broadcom wireless adapter but was too busy to send laptop for repair.
USB D-Link wireless card was working fine for me for 6-7 months until notebook suddenly died: no display, rebooting every 10 secs ignoring rescue DVD.

I sent it to HP service center. They replaced almost everything: display, hinges, motherboard with wireless card, HD.
Now I have a new problem with Broadcom wireless adapter - it doesn't support WPA encryption that I have at work and home.
I have tried updating Broadcom driver, installing WPA patches, reformatting HD and installing SP3 for WinXP Pro - nothing works.
I can connect to open networks and WEP encrypted ones but not to WPA networks.

Contacted 3 times to tech support. They walked me through the same thing that I already tried.
Finally they told me that it looks like hardware problem and I need to send laptop to service center.
I typed detailed description of the problem asking the tech. person explicitly check WPA connection.
One week later laptop comes with a report that wireless working fine. They didn't do anything to check WPA - there were 2 test connection: open one and WEP one and they both worked fine (as I stated in my instructions).

The most upsetting thing that now even my USB D-Link wireless card doesn't work with this laptop.

Talking on the phone with Indian technician was just a complete waist of time.
He was 100% sure that this can't be Broadcom card's fault - the problem is in my wireless router. I kept telling him that I have 3 more PC on my network working just fine but he was firm like a rock that I have a bad router.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Thanks Wayne,

this USB card works with other computers but not with my laptop anymore.

Overall performance of the 'repaired' notebook seems to be much slower - it takes 4 minutes for it to boot and show the desktop with the Start button although it has nothing installed.

It is amazing to me how they always are trying to blame your other equipment for their own hardware not working properly.

My wife has exactly the same dv9000 laptop model is still working fine with our router.

I'll be using your contact information to resolve the problem.

Thank you again.

I've been getting e-mail notifications of this thread being updated pretty often, so I came back to review some of the comments since I left my original one on Apr 22, 2008 of what worked for me.

I wanted to re-state that, although there appears to be a lot of potentially hardware-related issues, I still think it wouldn't hurt for most folks to at least try what solved my problems.

I had similar-sounding symptoms as, say, "Shilo E" (Jul 2, 2008), altough mine were out-of-the-box with the originally-loaded XP and not following an upgrade to Vista. (I was also supplied with the post-sale Vista upgrade disc, but haven't installed it yet since XP works just fine).

My opinion is that everyone having problems should first try simply uninstalling the "HP Wireless Assistant" (if it is installed and running) and see if your problems go away.

I've had almost a year now of steady/trouble-free use since removing it and nothing else.

Luck? I don't know...

Perhaps there's no apparent reason for it to be responsible, but in my own opinion I think it somehow "competes" with Window's own built-in features for control over the status of the wireless circuitry.

(Perhaps, as far-fetched as it seems, there's an ongoing "battle" such that the circuit is switched on and off so frequently it eventually burns out! Wow, now that sounds pretty scientific, huh? ;-) )

Anyway, owners can simply download the latest version for re-installation again from their model's "Software and Drivers Download" page on the HP support site.

Chances are you won't miss it or the little annoying systray icon or the longer start up times.

@ Wayne Sallee

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for your post. I think I'm right when I say that the HP Wireless Assistant is not a driver but just a utility. It does no harm to uninstall it permanently, and I think for some people doing so may help as it certainly did in my case.

Supposedly it is a more user-friendly alternative interface to the wireless connection selector feature that is already built into Windows.

But personally, my own experience is that since it is IN ADDITION to Windows own feature (and not SUBSTITUTING for the Windows feature by DISABLING it), you now have two utilities/features both trying to actively control the status of the same wireless hardware circuitry.

I realize the HP software programmers/designers probably intended for them to work in tandem, but my own experience says it doesn't work well. Simply removing/uninstalling the HP Wireless Assistant solves that. It has nothing to do with the ability of the wireless circuitry to continue to function (as do drivers).

Also, I don't see any need to reinstall it simply because a unit is being sent in for a fix. If the repair folks don't know how to use Windows' own feature/utility to set up and choose a wireless connection for testing then I wouldn't hold out much hope for a good fix anyway. Let's hope they're better than that.

Besides, rather than fool around with restoring missing utilities and individually checking system settings, mostly likely they are simply going to reimage the disk drive to some factory default to restore the entire system to a known-working state they are familiar with.

Unfortunately, that would most likely also restore the HP Wireless Assistant which, in my opinion, might well cause continued problems for the owner when returned (until he/she removed it, again).

So I think that, prior to returning a unit for repairs, more important than trying to recreate the as-purchased status of the machine by reinstalling the HP Wireless Assistant or similar things that users might have removed to simplify their systems, is to simply back up their hard drive just as it is so they can save all their documents, favorites, application and game settings, etc.

Wouldn't you agree? Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Has anyone else tried uninstalling the HP Wireless Assistant and then obtained good wireless performance? If so, please post a reply so others will know of something that helped more than one person (me).

Uninstalling the HP Wireless Assistant, is one of the first thing I do, when setting up a computer/laptop.
I find it does degrade the Windows operation of the wirless.
I think it is included for new users, who do not know how to setup a wirless enviroment.

That's correct. Wireless Assistant is not the driver, and is not needed.

I build my own desktop computers, and I Installed my own personally owned WinXP Pro on this computer.

My answer to what to do when sending the notebook in, is to take the hard drive out, and keep the hard drive.

Model: tx 1120us
Purchased: July 2007

I had the infamous wireless issue with htis laptop. I was past warranty so I ignored and was just going to get a wifi card. However just this past weekend I was using the laptop, walked away from it for a little while, and came back to a dead laptop. I wont even bother with explaining much more than that since I think everyone is well aware of the issue/problem.

My issue is that this needs to be addresses by HP for the tx1000 series. It needs to be added to the recall.

I have a dv2225 and have all the same problems. I've found a solution that works everytime and it is a software solution. I've read through all the posts and know that conventional wisdom is that the motherboard needs to be replaced, but hopefully it will never come to that for me. I downloaded the Broadcom Wireless LAN driver 802.11 and copied it to a CD. Whenever the wireless connection stops working (about every other day), I click and run sp34488.exe from the CD. Once it installs, I go to the folder where it is saved (in my case c:\SwSetup\SP34488A) and run IS (an Application). Once it is installed, I Shut Down the notebook (a cold boot, not a warm boot), then restart it. It takes a couple of minutes for the drivers to re-install but once they do, the HP WLAN Assistant will be enabled and the wireless will work again. Like I said, I have to do the entire process everytime it stops working. I tried to eliminate the step of reinstalling from the CD and just going to the folder on the C: drive and running IS from there, but it didn't work. It's time consuming but MUCH less frustrating then being without my computer for days at a time or sending it back to HP! It hasn't failed yet. Hope it helps.

Hi everyone, I want to help with my experience about this problem. My laptop is a DV 6338SE, and about a 3 months the wireless adapter was disappeared from my device manager… looking out in the internet I found that one solution was to update the BIOS... so I did it to the F.3F version, and it works for about 1 month. Recently I got the same problem again (the red light next to the wireless switch) so what I did was to update mi bios to the F.40 version and it doesn't work at all... looking for a solution I re-flashed mi BIOS again to de F.3F version and no difference, but when I change some BIOS settings like 1- enable the virtualization technology and 2- disable internal network adapter boot… the blue light shine every time I restart my laptop. My laptop has a windows vista (sp1 32 bits) clean install (without the HP things) and all the drivers updated. I hope it help you.

This problem obviously is widespread across a large range of products maufactured by HP . After paying $1,299AU for this notebook , one would surely expect that it works as its supposed to for longer than 14 months.
I for one have lost all confidence in HP. which is sad really as i have owned numerous HP products.
As far as I am concerned , Australia and the Asia Pacific region SHOULD be included in the extended warranty( free repair ). A response from someone at HP certainly would be appreciated .Anna?

Uninstall the HP Wireless Assistant and get it off your system.

It has been a year now since I did so and I haven't had a single problem since. My symptoms were much the same as others, and I had tried many of the "update" cures.

It *MIGHT* help if the problem is not failing hardware, but certainly will not hurt since it is not needed at all. Windows built-in features work just fine for selecting available networks.

As mentioned previously, I still think that it is the first and simplest thing to try if you are having intermittent wireless performance (blue light changing to amber without moving front panel "disable wireless" switch).

I'd sure like to hear of someone else having success after removing it (to confirm my own "discovery").

Good luck, all!

Just got my dv9000 back after the second wireless failure. I also had the cracked hinge problem and vertical red/green lines on the monitor. All was repaired at no cost, even though it has been out of warranty for 10 months (the wireless issue was still under the warranty extension).

One thing I notice - the bottom of the laptop is no where near as hot as it used to be. This indicates to me that something was done differently this time - perhaps a different type of motherboard?

I think HP has handled my situation well. Hopefully, it's fixed for good now.

Vicki Brockett I am in Australia and am also experiencing the same issue as you since the 22nd of October.

My friend also bought the same laptop (f551au) from the same place as I did and less than 2 days later he started having the same problems!

I have another friend who I unfortunately also convinced to buy the same model as well, but he purchased roughly a month later. I told him to let me know when his goes as well, because it seems inevitable now.

I am unsure as to what action to take, where to go with it. I bought mine roughly 1 year and 1 month ago, and did not extend the warranty.

Maybe all of us who are experiencing the problems together and can get in contact via email etc should write a combined letter to HP Australia asking to have out PC's repaired as this is a manufacturing defect, and not something caused by wear and tear.. even if it is out of warranty.

I worked for Ford Motor Company here in Australia and if a vehicle had a known manufacturing defect that surfaced out of warranty, Ford would always come to the party in repairing these defects at no charge to the customer.

Hopefully HP can do something about this problem! It's very disappointing.

Sunny Singh,
Getting  as many Australians as possible  who are experiencing this issue with their  HP product  to write to HP head office  here in Australia, is a great idea , although , I don't like the chances of getting a response  from them , even emailing  tech support is a nightmare as they don't respond . All I can get out of anyone at HP Australia , is that "this issue doesnt affect HP Machines manufactured for sale in Australia" ....Strange  isnt it , that  I am not the only  customer in Australia thats having this issue ,IF as they say ,   "Our machines  dont have this issue "......
As you say Sunny , If this was a car  and it had a fault ,  it would be recalled and fixed at no cost to the  customer.
Any  purchases I make in future , regarding  computers  or  other  computer related  goods , WILL NOT  be made thru HP. Their products, Particularly their notebooks/ laptops  definately have  issues that they refuse to admit to and take  responsibility for .

<HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement> for a list of many symptoms caused by motherboard failure, and laptops affected -- my fury is that altho my model number (dv9000) is covered, only certain pruduct numbers under dv9000 are included, and mine is not one of them! The problem is the motherboard, and the symptoms include loss of bootup, VERY slow bootup, WiFi stops working, etc. I spent hours with their call center and all they kept saying (politely, of course) is that my product number is not covered. The repair with shipping is well over $500 and it is because of their motherboards!

You maynot get a satisfying result from HP , as they refuse to admit or acknowledge that there are a large number of their notebooks across a broad range of models , other than the ones listed in their extended (free repair ) warranty, that are displaying the exact same symptoms . I have gotten nothing but the run around from HP since the whole fiasco started with my F551AU notebook . Countless hours spent on phone calls to them have gained nothing except a massive phone bill, and the same old story " Australian machines are manufactured at a different location , so therefore cannot have the same problems that others have "

Well 2 months short of , having my dv6119us
for 2 years , my laptop has now failed to find any wirless routers..And I thought I had a keeeper..I can't believe it..The only way I found about this(forum thread) was through a MSN search..I guess another issue is my battery won't last for more than 5 mintues. What a joke.Sounds like the best thing to do is change out the hardware(motherboard) yourself and install better a fan (if there is such).I absoulty hate HP customer care IMO you should not have to pay $50 to talk to a rep , just because your
HP product is out of warranty. This blows
chunks big time ,later.

I've been experiencing all sorts of issues with my dv9308nr. Wireless drops constantly or won't connect, laptop runs extremely hot and the cover around my lcd and the hinge has cracked on the left hand side. Finally, a few weeks ago my laptop refused to turn on; actually, I should state more specifically that the lights lit up but the screen was dark. By all appearances I had a dead machine. A few days later I decided to try again; it actually booted. Irocially the first program to run after the computer failure was HP update. I was directed to an HP site concerning the extended warranty (the one Anna listed in her post). I decided to call and see what could be done. Spoke to a gentleman who asked me numerous questions and walked me through a series of tests to determine if the machine was indeed having issues. Finally he wanted to remotely connect to the laptop. Once in he started to download drivers but I lost my wireless connection (typical for this laptop). He informed me to install the updated BIOS onb my own, gave me a support ticket number, told me he extended my warranty for another year and told me to only call back if the computer was dead. So much for HP standing behind the recall. Maybe I should call back and escalate to a case manager.

BTW, lost my connection three times while typing this comment...

@ Sean Sheppard

The hinges on my laptop cracked the display too. And of course as with every other customer, the motherboard was bad, causing wireless problems, and then it got so bad that it did not want to turn on, and it crashed my hard drive.

I sent my laptop in and they fixed it, both the hinges, and the motherboard.

Call them, and tell the person that you want to speek to a case manager, and tell them that you want your hinges and display fixed, and that you want your motherboard to be replaced.

Anna,

I'm a self employed Computer Service rep. I recently had a customer with intermitant wireless issues as described in this thread. The customer has been having problems with detecting a wireless network when staying a motels during his travels.
I was called to see if I could look at it and possibly fix the problem. When he brought the laptop to me, it detected my wireless network almost immediately, however, after he left and checked into a motel, he was not able to detect the wireless network they had.
After reseaching I found this thread and found the his laptop, HP Pavilion DV9208 (RP114UA) met the requirements mentioned in this thread. I passed on the info to the customer and instructed him to contact HP.
It took him 5 phone calls just to get thru to a technician. He was told there was no such issues as described and that HP can attempt to repair the problem but it may cost him close to $400.00 to fix it.
At this point, because of his dis-satisfaction with HP, the customer is wanting to replace the wireless card if that will correct the problem. The laptop came with nVidia wireless but the HP Parts shows a Broadcom Mini PCI card instead.
Is there a number that the customer can call to speak with someone directly that is familiar with this issue that can help the customer or should he go ahead and have the wireless card replaced?
I am hoping that you can provide an answer to the customers satisfaction soon. Please contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Hello Anna, Please forgive me if I am not following the correct protocol but I am trying to resolve an issue that led me to this post. I have just registered and was not sure whether to start a new thread or reply. I have just purchased two DV5T laptops from Costo (see Frank Fazi's woes above) and have been trying to convert from Vista64 to XP. The problem is that these Costco units are heavily customized units and do not seem to match all of the other commonly sold units that are out there. This one has an Intel G45 Express chipset. Most of the posts refer to an nVidia chipset. After 12 hours yesterday in HP Chat sessions (with little luck), I still have a machine running that has no network connectivity. I have been able to ascertain (by actually opening up the laptop) that my wireless card is a Broadcom 459263-001 which HP Part Surfer finds as a Broadcom 4312MCG 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter (Baralo). Belarc Advisor shows that I have a Quanta 3602.02.20 Motherboard and the bios revision is F.11 (10/29/08). I have found everything so far except LAN, Wireless and Audio. Getting it on-line is the most important thing now. After searching a zillion posts in google and in HP Support I found references to SP36684 and followed that to SP41680 as an update. I can get both of these to load, but I cannot seem to get on line. I can see multiple access points and the DHCP router assigns me an IP, but I cannot seem to connect on-line. I have HP Wireless Asst (SP36770) installed and the Intel INF Utility (SP36

OK everyone. Three hours later, after another call to HP Support telling me I'm not supposed to remove Vista, I found the solution in an obscure Linox post: http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&action=printpage;topic=47027.0

In searching HP's site for "bcmwl5", I was finally able to find this article: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=473038&swItem=ob-55706-1&mode=4&idx=3

which pointed me at SP37951 which did work. I now have a working machine (both DHCP and DNS thank you!) and I am on-line. If anyone has anything else to add, please let me know.

I have been having this issue for quite sometime now on my HP Pavilion tx1000z series notebook. It has been pretty unstable with respect to the wireless performance.... All along I was thinking about problem with Vista... Then while searching for the solution, I came across plethora of complaints, posts regarding the same wireless problem. Now, my wireless has stopped working completely but bluetooth does show signs of life... I would really be happy if a proper solution can be given.... All possible (I think so) I have already tried.... In teh last, this issue is not only with dv9000 series... As I have looked up .... in general, it seems to bog all the Pavilion models down...

I got the same problem with my Pavilion dv6449 AMD notebook. I did a complete system restore to factory default. I updated my bios to the latest f.38 6/2007 and the Broadcom Wifi driver, but it still does not work. I also set the BIOS settings to factory defaults. The broadcom driver does not show up and so I think I have the same hardware failure. The problem just happened all of a sudden, rebooted, and it never worked since regardless of reading all the docs/forums and trying the above updates. I purchased the notebook around November 2007. I'm in Brazil so I don't know if I can send it in for MB swap. ???

I went to pull the wireless card out of the slot and noticed that 1 of the screws is busted off. Hummm...thanks HP for repairing my wireless card. Im still waiting for a forum responce to find out if I can attach a external wireless card ???

HELP PLEASE
Hi, I have a hp pavilion entertainment pc dv6204eu.  In May, the wireless drivers started getting lost if the computer was restarted or if it was on standby and they would only return once the laptop was restarted and a diagnostics hard disk test was run. This is becoming an annoying problem and sometimes it is not resolved by running a hard disk diagnostics test.
I was told to install a Bios upgrade by hp online support but after doing that, it has failed to solve the problem.  Please inform me of any other solutions that I could try.  My laptop is about three years old now so the warranty is expired.

Hello Anna,

I got my laptop serviced in December of 2007 when the mnotherboard was replaced, and it was a real ordeal to obtain since I bought my PC at Texas (2006) and then move into Canada (2007).
Just yesterday the same problem came back and I lost the wireless connectivity.
I'm currently working as Tech Support for a very large world wide company and as far as I can see Dell (the supplier for 54,000+ PCs) offers a better service that I ever received from HP.
I would like to know what are my options,  if the last resource is having to replace the motherboard again, (ebay 150 + 50 shipp) which I'm total capable of performing on my own, I rather buy another laptop.

Hi Anna from total care. You should probably go back to the v3000 series when giving any wireless advise. You should also comment on how your repair department not only has a terrible track record on repairing notebooks but they also break off screw heads and damage wireless cards while replacing "many" defective motherboards that create "wireless issues" in the first place.
Sincerely,KAK...aka: who bought a V3010US and a V6410US

Hi Anna,

I have a HP Pavillion dv6353cl and the WLAN card not being detected issue started to happen since last week.

Today I updated the BIOS using the sp42854.exe file, but the problem remains.

How do I proceed to solve that problem since I am not from USA?

Following is the P/N from my notebook if necessary: RV011UAR#ABA

Thanks in advance,

Anna,

I, too, am now experiencing the same wireless connectivity issue with my Pavilion dv9413cl laptop. The Broadcom internal wireless adapter drivers load only occasionally upon boot. I've updated drivers, unloaded and reloaded them. I just installed the latest BIOS for the AMD process version of this laptop without wireless connectivity success. The laptop doesn't qualify for a free repair under the limited warranty service enhancement program (it doesn't have an "R" after its otherwise qualifying product number), so I don't think there's much I can do to revive the wireless, unless a plug-in USB wireless network adapter would work. Would such an adapter still work even if the existing motherboard / wireless internal adapter communications no longer work?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

To:  Jack Foster (2)

I have an Intel-processor-equipped dv9033cl model with a finally-failed Intel PRO/wireless 3945ABG Network Connection internal card (or maybe it's the motherboard... no one seems to know or admit!).

I've been able to use an external USB-stick type of wireless G adapter very well.  True, it's a nuisance to have the thing sticking out the side (and to be careful not to break it off) and to insert/remove it, but it has performed without problems.

To avoid having the sporadic/dead internal wireless card from interferring with using the external USB wireless, I did "disable" it using the Device Manager, and also keep the OFF/ON wireless switch (amber/blue light) in the OFF position.

So, yeah, mine is working OK for now... after having the hinge/cover/LCD display replaced (with the new screen having one small cluster of bad/stick-ON pixels) and the BIOS updated so the fan spins continually...

Another tip to consider is this:  after receiving my repaired unit back, I went to the hardware store and got a roll (or strips) of some thick (about 3/8 inch thick by 1/2-inch wide) stick-on felt strips.  I placed a couple of, say, 3-inch-long strips (forming a right angle) on the outer-edge two sides of the fan grill so as to prevent the flow of any hot exhaust air from being sucked underneath the computer back into the fan.  That way the fan gets cooler air from "further away" under the computer.

I then placed more (shorter) strips next to the other remaining rubber feet such that they all lift the computer the same height and it doesn't rock back and forth when on a table.  (Don't try to add the stick-on felt on top of a rubber foot itself -- it won't stay there.)  The extra spacing underneath the machine helps other parts stay cooler and "breathe".

(I recall wondering, when I first got this 17-inch machine and saw how big it was and how low to the table it sat as compared to my old 15" model with it's back/rear-edge-fan intake, if it would have any heat buildup problems underneath the unit... I guess we all know now!...)

Which reminds me of another tip:  Before I even got my machine I saw that the fan intake is on the bottom near the back left corner, so that if I use it as a "laptop" my leg would block the hole.  So I use one of those kitchen oven double-walled/air-spaced no-burn cookie sheets easily found at a grocery store which fits under my 17-incher just perfectly:  about a 1/4 inch on either side, and about an extra inch front and back.  It keeps the heat off your legs as well as supports the unit and lets it "breathe".

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I've got a DV9205us with the same issue.
Tried Vista (original opsys), XP, Linux, Windows 7, all the bioses, drivers, tweaks, mechanical fixes(high-pressure air in fan grills).
Couldn't get support because I went straight to Brazil after buying this NB in Concord, CA.
Had issues with:
Wireless adapter gone missing.
Noisy, always-on fan.
Over-heating to black-screen off.
Screen hinge broke with normal use.
Machine under-spec'd for Vista (RAM)

The latter I managed to fix myself by getting a spares-or-repair shell and swapping out the 2G and broken hinge. I also got an extra battery, hard disk and caddy, and lcd.

The noisy fan I can live with.

The overheating I can deal with by not running too many applications/services.

But the wireless adapter just won't work and I won't put up with it any longer. I've spent ages having use a lan cable or not go online due to no support in Brazil.
Well, I'm back home in the UK, and I want answers and a solution.
And don't give me any out-of-warranty BS when HP Brazil wouldn't give me any support while I was there.

HP, you had what could have been such a great product, but screwed it up, then screwed around with thousands (or more) of us.

Just give me a new, working machine.
And no send-ins and wait to see what happens.
We know what happens - they disappear for months, and when they finally come home they crapout straight away again so have to be sent of for repair (again) or fiyour lucky, replacement with same model that crapsout straight away.

I just want to take it to PC World and swap it for a similar model, but preferably
different make, at your expense.
Or send a full refund to... send me a mail for the address to send the check to.

Tom H-R
