I am running Vista here. The built-in drivers include 75 Deskjet models. I do not see the 9600, but the 9800 is included as well as the Deskjet 1220. I would suspect one of these would be compatible.

The 9800 driver does not work. At least it does not support manual double sided printing.
For me this is a major pain - and a major disappointment. I carried out a full Vista Upgrade check before installing teh new OS. The check, very usefully, threw up a couple of things, but made no mention of my 9650.
Second beef is that no-one seems to know when / if a driver is going to be made available.
Seriously disappointed.
Well, here we are in November 07 and still no Vista support for the Deskjet 9600 series.
I have the 9680, which was no cheap printer. It's seriously frustrating to be told my HP to replace a well-functioning $700 printer just to get support for Vista. If I do that, I guess I can assume I'll have to replace THAT printer in three years to get support for the next Windows upgrade?
For added fun, the phone support rep. actually blamed Microsoft for the drivers not being available... and also opined that drivers MIGHT be available in February 2008.
upgrading to vista, frustrating indeed! my 9650 works with the 9800 driver but two perpendicular lines (in my CAD program) are no longer perpendicular - 1cm on 10cm!!
my 9650 also works with the old driver : no perpendicular problem but a problem with linewidth. all lines are small. everything filled is not printed
it would be polite to have a vista driver for my 3 years old not so cheap printer or a reliable work around
I'm with you there. My 9680 prints on, but has various issues with the the 9800 driver. Like the media width sensor rejecting every single page.
It's just wild to me that HP wouldn't support this higher-priced, business class inkjet for longer than they did. I shouldn't have to buy a new printer every three years just so I can get software updates.
I actually wrote CEO a letter on this one. I figure I have the time since I'm not making prints.
