I have several dc5100's that like to reset the display resolution when a user logs in. It happens most frequently when another user, not the normal user of the computer, logs onto the machine. Our resolution standard is 1024x768, but it resets to a higher resolution. Has anyone else experiencd this and is ther any solution? It gets to be annoying.

Hi Chuck,

I have had this problem when the "Refresh Rate" was higher than the maximum allowed. This would be where I would begin trouble-shooting. However, the resolution always decreases.

Also, update the video drivers.

Another thought, are you using "LCD" monitors? If so, they have a "Native Resolution". In your case it is most likely higher than 1024x768. This would answer the question why would the resolution increase, not decrease? --which is more normal.

It happens with both LCD and CRT monitors. I think the refresh rate is set at 85Hz for most of the machines. It is set at whatever the default was.

Boy, Chuck, I am at a loss on this one.

My only other thought is "are you on a LAN"? This could possibly have something to do with it. However, I am not sure that the LAN could force screen resolution to increase or decrease.

I ran several searches for automatic resolution change and got no help.

I guess the video experts will have to weigh-in on this one. I will be interested in hearing the solution!

Hi,

Try launching msconfig.exe and check whether there's a utility called setrefresh.exe - or something similar - launching at boot. This utility changes the refresh rate from something considered unsafe to a more safer setting to prevent monitor damage.

Jim

Thanks Jim, and yes that utility runs. But if that just sets the refresh rate what effect should that have on the resolution? My problem is that it resets from our company default of 1024x768 to a higher resolution.

Hi Chuck,

From the readme.txt file:
"SetRefresh is a utility which attempts to optimize the monitor's refresh rate,
and in some cases the resolution, for the best user experience. It does this
by querying the capabilities of the display adapter and the monitor. The first
time a given monitor and display adapter combination is detected, SetRefresh
will set the mode to the preferred timing mode specified by the monitor, if
one is specified in the monitor's EDID. If no preferred timing mode is
specified, SetRefresh will only try to optimize the refresh rate. If a monitor
and display adapter combination has been previously optimized, SetRefresh will
determine if the current resolution and color depth combination is one which has
not been previously optimized. If so, SetRefresh will try to optimize the
refresh rate (the resolution will not be changed). SetRefresh optimizes the
refresh rate by selecting the highest refresh rate both the display adapter and
the monitor support for a given resolution and color depth. Only refresh rates
which the monitor has a preset for will be used. If SetRefresh cannot
determine what the optimum display mode or refresh rate is or there is any
unexpected condition, then it will simply do nothing."

If you don't want to disable the utility, you can try and re-install it using the -p switch, which will optimise the refreshrate for the current resolution, in your case 1024x768 and after reboot the resolution will then stay @ 1024x768.

BTW, the utility can be dloaded via sp25827.exe,

Regards,
Jim
