I recently had to reformat the hard drive on my machine and at the same time decided to update to Windows XP. Now my scanner wont work. When it finds new hardware it finds the card SYM53C416 when it is truly a SYM20401. I was able to install all the software that came with the machine but test still indicates there is "no scanner" I have tried deleting and reinstalling the hardware but still with no luck. Also called HP support with no luck as this machine is out of warranty. I know the scanner works because befor reformating hard drive I scanned in some documents. Please can someone give me some suggestions on what I need to do. Also is there another SCSI I can choose from in Windows XP I chose the one Imaging drivers and it had the HP Scanner 4 P but that didn't work either gives me an Error 10(there are no conflicts either). HELP!!!! please I am desperate..

If you don't mind buying a new SCSI card, you might get the scanner working again with an Adaptec card -- you need to find out what bus you have inside your system (ISA or PCI), probably ISA. The problem is that the software that came with your scanner is not supported under XP, so you will probably have to use the Microsoft Windows Imaging Architecture (WIA) solution, which won't offer all the features of your old software. If you really want your old scanner to work with the old software, you might be better off going back to an older version of Windows, like Win98 :(.

I'm not sure if this will help. I have just changed my pc that runs XP OS and wanted to use my old 4p scanner. I had to do the following:
Replace my old scsi card with a pci card, buy a converter to go from the old scsi lead to the new card, downloaded some software from hp drivers and updates for a different scanjet, I can't remember which one but it states that it might work with 4p
I installed the card and got it running, then installed the 4p software then installed the downloaded driver software. (You might just need the download)
I have full use of my scanner and the original software.

Hewlett Packard stopped supporting these SCSI interface cards. There are no device drivers for these SCSI interface cards with the Windows 2000 logo or Windows XP logo.

The Fix: A new SCSI card. The newer operating systems support LSI Logic brand PCI to SCSI Host Bus Adapters (HBA) such as the LSI20860, which is available from the LSI Logic online store.

The sym20401 has a 25-pin connector, while the LSI20860 has a 50-pin connector -- so a cable change is also required when upgrading to the LSI20860. Instead of the 25-pin to 50-pin you've got, the new cable should be a SCSI 50-pin high density (male) to 50-pin Centronics cable. This cable too is available at local computer stores or online.

As of Dec 2003, the new card is about $40, and the cable is about $30. You might consider buying a new HP scanner instead.
