You can go to this website and download drivers for your labtop. Most of the drivers work also when you do a windows update in the custom mode you will get some of the hardware drivers

If you have a wired internet connection, use Device Manager.Right click each device and choose Update driver, let XP connect to Windows Update.

I'm in the same boat. The HP phone support is no help. None of the drivers they recommended worked. At least they were kind enough to warn me that they might not.
The hardware has to be slowed to a crawl by Vista. If I manage to find drivers that will work, I'll be sure and post links to them here.

Any idea where I can find the drivers for Altec Lansing speakers ?
Cheryl G. This member has accumulated 20000 or more points
Jan 17, 2008 01:19:03 GMT    Unassigned

You have Altec Lansing speakers_but they are powered by Conexant HD Audio.
Try drivers from v3000z.
Install MS UAA first with a reboot before Conexant driver.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3180330&lang=en

If you get an error when installing...force install the conexant sound drivers.

Device Manager>Audio on HD

Right click, Update Driver

Say "no, not at this time" for connecting to Windows Update

Install from a list or specific location

Don't search I will choose the driver to install

In the list of common hardware types, scroll down and select Sound, Video, and Game controllers

Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk"

Next...browse to C:\Swsetup\sp34386

Choose the "inf" and ignore any protest from XP

The Atheros AR5007 drivers:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P8I57N0S

I know the 5006x driver works, but this is the one that's actually for the card.
I find it interesting that my previous post here was edited. I also find it interesting that HP hasn't posted drivers on the main driver page for this "downgrade" considering that most people use XP for work.

Continuing on:
Since it appears to be a hopeless cause for me to get XP working with all of the hardware (and yes, I've tried - including everything Cheryl G. has posted), the advertisement for my laptop stated that it supports a maximum of 3Gb of ram. There are only 2 slots. Should I buy one 2Gb module, and one 1Gb module? If so, is there a specific slot that the 2Gb module is supposed to be installed to?

Well, I went through Round 4 of trying to get everything installed and working with XP Pro. I still have one yellow ! on one of the hardware devices, but it's listed as an "unknown device," which doesn't seem to be affecting computer performance at all.
After getting rid of Vista, I'm happy to report that this is the fastest laptop I have ever used. Office 2003, and Works 2002 run perfectly. I'm still considering upgrading to 2Gb of ram though.
Thank you to Cheryl G. and Fred Holdon for all your help.

Thank you Cheryl G. That got it.
For anyone interested in manually installing (almost) all of the drivers for the F750US, I'll package and upload everything in a single download very soon, and include a text file with specific instructions.
Once you get everything right, I think it would be a good idea to invest in a copy of Norton Ghost so you can make your own restore disk(s). I've found to to be invaluable over the years.

I bought an F750US and found lots of DVD drive noise when the system is reading from disk. I worry about its quality. Is this normal?

This appears to be normal. Mine only does this with certain disks, which makes me wonder more if the disk is slightly unbalanced when it is occurring.

That's everything (with the exception of Microsoft .Net Passport 2.0) needed to install all of the drivers for XP, including instructions. I'm a premium account holder at the download site until June 2009, so don't worry about it being deleted any time soon.

Much thanks to Cheryl, Tim, and Fred. This is very helpful. I'm still having trouble with the sound drivers and modem drivers, however. I cannot tell which device to update per the directions. I have the following five devices detected in XPsp2: Audio Codecs; Legacy Audio Drivers; Legacy Video Capture Devices; Media Control Devices; Video Codecs. In addition, I have one unknown device (perhaps the HP buttons that Cheryl mentioned; will update to .Net and try to resolve) and one PCI device (unknown what this is). Any advice would be most helpful. Thanks.

Drew, as soon as I've had time to make a new restore disk with Ghost, I'll do a "from scratch" reload, and post new instructions here as an attachment. The instructions I posted were done (mostly) from memory, and may not be 100% accurate concerning devices shown in Device Manager. I will try to do it some time tomorrow (Thursday) evening, but it is possible I won't have time to get it done before Friday evening. I'm sorry about the delay, but it's harder to get it done now that I've actually started using the laptop, and have files stored on it.

Thanks, Tim, for the reply. I actually just got the sound and modem working.
Basically there was one major problem with my install: my first install used SP1. I applied SP2 to this install after running the audio driver programs, but this is too late.
So for my second installation I used an XP disc that had SP2 slipstreamed, and that fixed the problem. If SP2 is installed prior to running the audio driver programs, then XP correctly identifies both the modem audio and the conexant audio, allowing the user to force install the drivers per your instructions. If SP2 is not installed, however, then XP does not correctly find the HD audio devices (which should be discovered when the first audio driver program is installed per your instructions) thereby blocking the driver update.
So, for my part, everything is good, and no need to do any further work. Future users should just be aware of the SP2 issue. Install SP2 before working on sound and modem drivers (and perhaps others as well, but untested).
Again, thanks for the comment, and thanks for the driver upload. The only thing I changed regarding your instructions was to run the chipset drivers first, then video. I did this in order to have as many mobo drivers installed as possible before tackling any more advanced drivers. I think this matters because on my first install I did video drivers first per your instructions and the nvidia applet program in the taskbar was clunky and slow until the chipset drivers were installed. It worked, mind you, just slow and momentary freezing. Just fyi. Thanks again.

Hi everyone, sorry for asking this again. My microphone port is not working, even though I was able to get pretty much everything else installed following the instructions. The other small problem is that my speaker is constantly on even after I plug into earphone. I wonder if any of you had the same problem and whether you have figured out a solution. Thanks a lot.

Good deal Drew. Glad you got it working.

wenjun guo, I have the same issue. I went into Control Panel and haven't been able to remove sound from the laptop speakers when using the headphones. The advanced options have been of no help in this either.
As for the microphone, I don't use one, so I have no idea if this might be a platform problem or not. Did yours work properly before you removed Vista?

Greetings all,

Thank you for posting this information (and to Tim Shores for his XP drivers download link)! I just purchased (yesterday) the F750US laptop and in the next few days I will start to find out if it will work ok with MS Visual Studio 2008 Pro and Vista. (It is still in the sealed box because I have another pressing issue with my HP a1610n desktop: *hopefully* **just** a blown power supply....)

I have a few questions:

1. I know that I will need additional memory to run Vista on the F750US laptop. Tim do you (or anyone else) know if one can install 2 x 2gb DDR2 dimms in the slots without any problems (even if only 3gb is recognized) -- or will it only take 1x 1gb dimm and 1x 2gb dimm? If the latter, which size dimm goes into which slot?

2. Any recommendations on which brand memory to use or stay away from?

2. I haven't used Vista in over a year --and I'm sure the released version [Home Premium] is much different than the beta version I used. a) Can I just fire up the machine without activating Vista (or Norton) and use it for a week to see if it will serve my purpose? b) Any best/quick way to get rid of (or not have loaded) anything I do not need?

3). If I do decide to install XP later down the road: a) Can XP Home work or only XP PRO? b) Does one leave the original 'restore' partition/space on the disk? c) Can one dual boot both Vista and XP on the machine? If so, presumably, one installs XP first and then later (if at all..) Vista? d) Does the install order matter? e)Can one use an external hard drive for a dual boot (say containing Vista)?

4) If one creates the recovery dvd/cd and then has to do a complete re-install of Vista by using the F key option?, can one again burn a recovery dvd/cd or does something on the hard disk remember that you have already done it?

5) According to the pdf spec sheet this laptop does not come with Bluetooth. However, somewhere on HP's site there is a video file (for the F750US) on how to install/replace an internal bluetooth module (in battery? or disk drive compartment???). So does the machine have/support an internal bluetooth module?

6) And last but not least, can one upgrade (in the future) the hard drive to say a 7200 rpm sata drive?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Best Wishes,
-Brent Arnold

Brent,
First off, you're welcome. Now, on to your questions:

I have been unable to get any information on this, and I've read all of the online manuals. Either no one knows, or no one is saying.

2. Any recommendations on which brand memory to use or stay away from?

I'm a Samsung fan. Kingston and Corsair are great, but I don't (personally) consider them to be worth the extra money. I've never had a problem with Samsung, so I will continue to use their ram.

Vista RC2 was junk, and what turned me completely against it. Both Home Premium, and Ultimate run great, but they're both so much slower than XP that I do not consider it an even trade-off for the supposed extra security.
As soon as you accept the 2 agreements from Microsoft and HP, Vista is yours. I went through everything in the Add/Remove Programs list, and uninstalled everything I knew I wasn't going to want to use, but Vista still did not compare with the speed of XP. Norton, I never activated at all.

There is no real difference between Pro and Home after the install of SP2, so there should be no problem. I used "The Ultimate Boot Disk" and deleted all partitions before installing XP. Vista and XP will dual boot. I'd use a partition manager to resize the 100gb partition, and install XP in a different partition created by it.
I'm not aware of anyone dual booting using a USB hard disk, though it may be possible. You need to ask someone with more technical expertise than I have on that count.

4) If one creates the recovery dvd/cd and then has to do a complete re-install of Vista by using the F key option?, can one again burn a recovery dvd/cd or does something on the hard disk remember that you have already done it?

Once you've created your (3) restore DVDs, the option to create new ones disappears. It does not reappear after you do a restore using the disks.

I wasn't interested in Bluetooth, so maybe someone else can answer this for you.

6) And last but not least, can one upgrade (in the future) the hard drive to say a 7200 rpm sata drive?

*If* I read correctly, the F750US already has an SATA hard drive, so upgrading to a larger, faster drive should not be an issue. It just may not run at the ATA300 (or whatever laptop hard disks top out at)if the board doesn't support it.

HI this looks like some hard work went into these posts and I will appreciate all the efforts since my first attempt and downgrade failed and need a post like this I'm sure it will be read often... I just picked up a Preserio F750US to get set up for solid works, and to run some PLC programming etc, and want to downgrade to XP does anyone know if:
1) using the xp drivers for this pc hardware will the USB port(s) will replicate a serial port I think I would need to get a usb to rs 232 adapter so I can upload dowload to my programable logic controllers etc. I think most of the newer plc programs support usb or ethernet port for communications. My old Compaq 1505US has a port replicator with rs 232port.
2)I made the 3 DVD restore disks then tried to load xp home media center on it from a restore disk we got with our e-machine desktop computer (I figured it would probably already have sp2 on it) bit also have an older xP home 5 CD's that I got with my compaq I could probably use that set not sure wich one would register easier - (I saw it mentioned on the web that to register just mention we installed a new HD. The xp 2005 media center DVD states for use with e-machines but not sure if the install disk would know) It wont let me start the install due to Vista being a later program.
3) DO I need to reformat the HD from a dos prompt or something ? Or just delete all the files in C if it will let me, and reboot with the xp restore disk? If so can I just leave the d: partioion and clean it out or does it need to be reformatted as blank somehow.
4)I saw Tims post about partitioning software. Is there is a shareware version ? since I'll probably only do this once. If I can use the D partiotion as is for files I would probably just do that

Thanks for all your help I'm up and running with XP the only problems are:
1) Volume control keys they display up and down controls on the screen but will not adjust volume up or down at teh sound card.
Mouse adjusting volume works in cd player etc?

2)Headphones they don't disable the deck speakers when plugged in.

3)Microphone does not work when pludgged in or using the one that is built into teh monitor.

Any one lave any Ideas ? not sure if I need toleave legecy audio drivers in the device manager? or if I should try and remove all but the Conexant High audio driver and see what happens? not sure if they would re-load if deleted and was needed?

Kenneth,
To adjust the volume, you don't want this: http://img226.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=th_28103_vol_control-01_122_90lo.jpg
You want this:
http://img104.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=28103_vol_control-02_122_717lo.jpg
Just double click the speaker icon in the bottom right corner to pull it up. You have to adjust the volume through the Wave Balance... At least, I do. Hope this helps.

Anyone still having issues getting the audio drivers to work? I managed to get everything installed after downgrading to XP except for the audio. After I install the UAA it still doesn't show the HD audio or whatever is supposed to be installed.

use SP34386, unpack it to HD it will fault trying to auto install the driver. Follow Tims instructions to force install the audio driver but use the driver in SP34386 it's not perfect but best so far. Still no Mic. and you need to mute then plug in headphones to use them with deck speakers off. The driver is "wis30b5a.inf"

I still can't get the audio to work. Even after I install the UAA it doesn't add the HD audio device to my sound, video and game controllers. It shows my audio as "legacy audio drivers". There is an unknown PCI device which I presume is the audio, but when I try to update that with the SP34386 it says that it doesn't contain the information for the device. Any ideas? I'm using windows xp sp3.

Hello all.

I am now having some trouble playing DVD movies on the laptop. Is anyone else having this problem?

The funny thing is that if I use a burned DVD it will play via the VLC Media Player. But Windows Media will not play a burned DVD.

Neither program will play a store-bought retail DVD.

I have updated all the software, installed numerous codecs and codec libraries, and I still cannot get a commercial DVD to play.

thanks,

Mike Kuang, SP3 for XP is not a final release. It's still in beta stage, and there are no guarantees that everything is going to work with it. As of now, it's still listed as an "RC2," which is a release candidate.
Were I you, I'd uninstall it, and go back to SP2 until the official release of SP3.

I am not sure how to install them for the hardware. I am not sure which device to pick from the list as far as the hardware.
Also, when I plug in a USB device, I am getting a message that states that the item would function better running on a 2.0 USB port.
Anyone know how I can finish the upgrade.
I only have dialup as the wireless and ethernet are not installed properly. It is a 802,11b/g WLAN.
Any informaion would be appreciated.

Well Im going back to Vista with my restore disks and returning this HP ! HP Support sucks can't even supply the correct drivers. I have 14 days to return mine at no cost si it goes back I found a Gateway with Dual core Intel Pentium and 2 Gig ram for less than if I upgraded the Compaq with 2Gig . It seems well documented the problems with the Coenxant HD Audio. I went and looked a another F750US with Vista at the store and it looks like you really need the Coenxant interface to get the proper functions from the audio card I managed to load a Conexant utility wit one of the many drivers I tried although itis little more than an Icon in the control panel one time it blue screend me opening it . the other times it just shows driver info no options Ken Good luck guys

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this site.I just happened to purchase the 750us and of course I wanted to downgrade it!! I followed Tim's directions, but for some reason the audio and modem drivers still are giving me a problem. I loaded the uaa driver first, Am I supposed to see this in the add/remove programs list in the control panel?
I try and install manually by pointing to the 34200 folder, but it doesn't work.Any ideals would be much appreciated!! Thanks,Phil

I would firstly like to say thank you to Cheryl G, and the others who contributed, for their work on finding the drivers and Tim Shores for his work in packaging everything up!!! With the exception of one minor thing, his installation instructions worked perfectly! I have no !'s in Device Manager and have XP successfully running on my F750US with the exception of the normal audio quirks: Volume has to be controlled from the Wave control in lieu of the master volume(this also means the main mute is inoperable as well), the mic is inoperable, and lastly the speakers do not mute when the headphones are plugged in. None of these are particularly bothersome to me at this point. I do hope HP/Conexant release an updated XP driver soon, but until then I am just glad to be running a stable OS again. I suggest the following changes to the Instructions:

1.) Install WiFi drivers first. Previously when attempting to install the Ethernet drivers, there are 2 "Ethernet Adapters" showing in Device Manager. This is confusing as there is no easy way to distinguish which one should be installed. Installing WiFI eliminates one of these.
2.) There is one step missing from the force installs. After selecting "Do not search..." you have to select the device from a list. Select either network adapter, modem, etc from the list, then you will be presented with the option to click on Have Disk.

Other than that, the install went super smooth. Again, I would like to thank all who contributed to the drivers and Tim for his work on packaging everything into one clean install. This laptop absolutely SCREAMS now that XP is on it.

Thanks to everyone for all the work people put into this. I bought an F750US for my wife, and followed the directions here and it appears that everything installed just fine (when I check the device manager). However, I have one nasty problem. My wireless connection doesn't work.

When I mouse over the icon in the toolbar, it shows "Wireless network interface disabled". When I open the Atheros Client Utility, it shows no connection. Same thing when I open the Network Connections control panel. When I use the Network Connection wizard, it says that the Atheros AR5006X Wireless Network Adapter is disconnected. My wireless network is working, because I'm on it on my Mac now.

It's been a while since I have played around in Windows-land, so I may have forgotten a few things. Any suggestions?

Barry Felson,
The computer knows the wireless interface is there, so the drivers are installed. I know this sounds ridiculous, and I'm by no means putting you down here because I ran into this same issue myself, but there is a slide-button on the front edge of the computer (just right of the LEDs) that disables the wireless. Is the slider to the left, or right? (The right side enables the wireless device.)

Feb 13, 2008 17:19:30 GMT    Unassigned

Mine wireless worked fine although the LED always stayed orange. When Vista was installed the LED turned Blue when enabled and orange when switched off.
You may need to go to network connections and "search for wireness networks" when you see your connection accept the connection. Enable Icon in taskbar so you can see if it's switched on or off. switching the slider lever updated the icon with a red X when switch was turned off.

Well that was embarassing. I never even looked at that slider (just assumed that it was the latch that unlocked the cover). It was to the left. I slide it to the right and VOILA, I have wireless.

Tim, use SP34386, unpack it to HD it will fault trying to auto install the driver. Follow your instructions to force install the audio driver. it's not perfect but best so far. Still no Mic. Mute should work: you need to mute then plug in headphones to use them with deck speakers off. adjusting the volume with Alt and volume key will return the deck speakers. So if you need to adj volume with headphones, do it with wave balance or the media player volume with a mouse. If you adj volume with keyboard you need to unplug headphones and re-mute then plug headphones nack in . I never got it working any better before I treturned my F750US. My gateway still does not have headphones working at all! but I got the mic. Hoping Microsoft works a fix for UAA and audio with XP and Mfgrs get it together to solve these issues.

The driver in Sp4368 is "wis30b5a.inf"
I think it's different than the one you had in your download packet.

I just found the correct XP audio driver for my Gateway MT6728 and now have Mic and full audio functions! It makes a difference when the proper audio driver and interface is present in the control panel. It had a SigmaTel HD Audio. so unlikely it would work for HP.

Not sure if that will work because the motherboard/chipset on the Gateway is an Intel 965GM. It loaded a good audio interface in the control panel that allowed manipulating Mic and headphone inputs and volume as well as allowing saving configuration presets. It will likely fault when installing if it does not see the Audio hardware. Then if you force it (like you have to with the HP drivers) you loose the interface that really drives the hardware properly.
The key to the F750US W/XP Audio issues will be to get an audio driver that really installs properly so you indeed get the proper audio interface in the control panel.

Here is the Gateway MT6728 XP driver:
SigmaTel Audio Driver Version: 5.10.5185.0

That's correct Kenneth.
I've poured over the Conexant website, and have still not as yet found the correct XP driver and software for the sound/modem bundle in the F750US. I am, however, continuing the search. If I ever manage to find it, I'll be sure and post it up here.
I've also tried to find a website for the manufacturer of the Quanta EA30 mainboard in hopes of finding the proper drivers without having to use this patchwork we've gotten stuck with. There doesn't appear to be a website though, so I'm guessing they make mainboards exclusively for OEM manufacturers.
Why it is that HP refuses to provide us with the drivers, I don't know. I do know there have been over 400 downloads of the packs I posted, and there's no telling how many of the drivers were downloaded individually.
I'll stay on the hunt, but I'm doubtful that I'm going to be able to find anything beyond what we have now.

I also tried installing that driver that Kenneth said worked for my laptop for the sigmatel hd audio, but it would not install either, and I am unable to do a force install, since my laptop does not detect that it even has a soundcard in it. The KB888111 fix doesn't apply to me, since I already have xp3 installed. Any help I could get would sure be appreciated.

Go to add and remove programs and remove the sigmatel audio. Then force install the latest audio driver we discussed in this thread.

sree kumar, no one has the microphone working. There seems to be no audio driver available for Windows XP that will get it working. I'm hopeful that if anyone finds one, they'll post it here.

For anyone that's interested, I increased the ram from 1gb to 2gb, and it improves the laptop with XP considerably. I found the 1gb modules of Samsung DDR2 5300 (667mhz) ram for $26.50 each, and think it's worth the investment to gain the added performance.

Now for a question. The advertisement for the F750US says that the video can use up to 256mb of shared ram. Has anyone found where to set this? I've been through the BIOS, and can't figure out how to get more than 128mb of ram set up for video.

If you look at the original application that ran in Vista the audio and mic. is controlled by an interface controller that sits in the control panel. Until you get an interface controler application you will have limited function. Basically you only have the bare minimum generic functions, not the full control that audio chip set has including mic. or lack of mic. The newer interface controllers have control of both Mic and headphone ports, and some allow configuring mic for aux. in etc.
Not having Mic is a line they must have gave you to make you go a way cause you messed with the way they shipped it...

On a side note, after upgrading to 2gb RAM, turning off indexing and a routine defrag, this laptop runs Vista without a hitch. Its every bit as fast as my XP partition is. The only real downside I have found is, of course, the network transfer speed.

Try this for Audio/Mic problems.Conexant SmartAudio 221:

http://www.mediafire.com/?dg0cmmkm4y4

Unzip to a folder.Run installer. If it errors use device Manager.
From Device Manager, right click "Audio Device on HD",choose Update driver,
No to connect,
Install from a list or specific location,
Don't search I will choose the driver to install,
In the list of common hardware types, scroll down and select Sound, Video, and Game controllers.
Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk".
Next...browse to the unzipped folder and choose the "WiSVHe5.inf".Ignore XP when it complains.
Reboot.

Has anyone found touchpad drivers that disable the touchpad while typing?  I know there's a manual lockout button, but was hoping there's a software fix.

Apparently I have big draggy thumbs.

Kenneth, sorry I didn't see your last 2 posts until now. I used WinRar, and zipped it all up at once after making the main folder, and sub-folders. Normally, I rar any files and then convert the rar to an executable before I have them hosted. I knew that a zip would be more convenient for most people, and eliminate the fear of downloading an executable created by someone you don't know.

Thanks Tim.
Is your audio driver as it should be? A real audio interface in the control panel now with the latest driver? I'm still tempted to snatch up one of these 750US models after seeing recent best buy sale at $429. since I've worked so hard with previous one and bailed out before the audio drivers were found. It's still seems like a good deal and I have a full restore disk with office 03 and solid works 2006. all I would need to do is bump the audio driver up and be set for an alt. laptop for my wife that I could use in an emergency. I do remember the touch pad was shallow and I also had issues with cursor picking up palm or thumb positions while my gateway has a deeper pocket for touch pad and avoids that.
The 750 touch pad settings didn't seem to compensate for hardware positioning.
I'm not checking my text and don't care to so I'm sure it's a mess in some regards but it's fee info for those looking for that .

I found an audio driver that actually installs from its setup program. It adds the app to control panel and both mic and headphones work properly. It's at http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=1194857
(free reg or viewing ads required)
Thanks to all here. This thread has been most helpful in getting the drivers I needed.

WOW! This has been a most tedious process even for a tech like myself; to no avail up until now. The driver on DriverGuide installed without a glitch:

I've been following this thread for the last day or two. The drivers would not load as described.

Thanks, buddy I owe you one.

Kenneth, everything is as it should be. I turned the interface in the task bar off, but it's available in control panel if I want to use it. Plug in the headphones, and the sound tot he speakers mutes, plug in the mic and it actually works.
This is a good little laptop, and for the money, it's a no-brainer. Add $60 for 2 gigs of ram, and it never hiccups. I've got $550 in it (after the rebates came in) and couldn't be happier. The only thing that would've made it better is if I'd bought it during a tax free weekend. :)
Again, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this thread, but I only check it about once a week now.

To all the people who donated time and expertese to this quest for an XP F750, THANK YOU! I now have a fully functional, Giga-fast XP laptop with only 18GB used in the hard drive. It took a couple of days to figure out that I had to install SP2 before the audio drivers could install, but when that was done, Tom's files and instructions did the install fine.

Thanks again,

Tim,

I just bought a F762NR, and I was wondering if drivers for the F750US were compatible with the F762NR...?

Anyone have any success downgrading to XP..?

Mike,

I'm using only XP home 32 bit, with SP2 installed and everything (except that eternal orange light on the wireless switch!) works properly. After almost a month I'm still well pleased with everything about my XP F750.

I don't know if the the drivers will work for a 64 bit version on this machine. Maybe some of the smarter folks can advise on 64 bit?

After reading all the threads, seems that there is a way to make this neat little laptop F750US works with all the features running XP.

I'm off the Circuit City to pickup it up since it is back on sale going for approx $430 after rebate.

Man.. everybody hates Vista.. just wish all the laptops manufacturers would continue to make their drivers available for XP.. it makes life so much easier for all of us.

Well....after all the research for getting the XP drivers, I decided to stay with Vista. I spent about 4 hours cleaning all the stuff off of it, and then removing all the vista memory hogging stuff.....it tuned up nicely. It is very fast, boots up quickly, and is very stable. I am very happy with it. But thanks to all you who have worked hard to get XP working on it...

I tried all of the above and everything is working fine except for two things:

1. MIC is still not working - installed all the drivers above. Sound works fine

2. I noticed that when I restart the laptop, it occasionally does NOT boot up. it just remains in blacks screen.

I upgraded to 2 gigs ram... should I switch back to Vista to avoid all problems of mic?

Thanks to everyone who put so much effort into getting XP to work! :-)

Mike,
XP 64 bit - Don't even try it. That would be an even bigger nightmare than this was. We spent weeks finding drivers to get everything working in XP 32 bit.

Richard,
You're welcome. The files will be available for at least one more year through my Megaupload account. I have no plans to take them down.

caldersm,
Like you, I'm an end user. I don't know the hardware specs on the F762NR, so I have no idea what will, and will not work. Sorry.

To everyone that said thanks, you're all welcome.
To all the fathers out there, Happy Father's Day. :)

Hello, I have been reading all this with great intrest as I have been looking for drivers for some days now. I own a presario f759 and thanks to you managed to change it all to XP without any problems. For some reason the wireless was not recognized in the beginning but I solved the problem by downloading SP36684. Even the light switches now from blue to orange.

The microphone seems to work better when I use an external one instead of the built in one. The output seems to be 3 times louder when I hear my voice back over skype test.

I would like to thank everybody who did contribute to this site because now I really do enjoy my laptop again.

Thanks,
Etienne

I realize that this thread has been around for a while, but I want to add some info to it in case others are looking for solutions.

I just finished downgrading a Presario C770us and I had to adjust a specific setting before the plug-in mic would work.  (I am using the sound driver that's referenced elsewhere in this thread.)

Here's what I had to do to get the mic to work:

1. Open the "Volume Control" window by double-clicking the speaker icon in the taskbar.  (If this icon is not visible, open "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the Control Panel and put a check mark in the box next to "Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar".)

2. In the menu at the top of the "Volume Control" window, choose "Options -> Properties.  In the drop-down list next to "Mixer Device" select "Conexant HD Audio Input" (NOT the one that says "... output").  The button next to "Recording will become active and be selected.

3.  Click "OK" and a window will open titled "Recording Control".

4.  Click the "Advanced" button under the Microphone Volume slider.

5. Put a check mark in "Micophone Boost" and click the "Close" button.

6. Exit the "Recording Control" window by clicking the "X" in upper-right corner.

What I discovered is that on my system the external mic jack will NOT work at all if I don't have the check-mark in "Microphone Boost".

(No matter what I do, my built-in mic in the computer's lid does not work, even using this procedure.)

Hi guys!! great awesome post. I discovered it a couple of months ago and was able to downgrade to XP no problems (except those already mentioned, by which I am not bothered at all)

Im having a situation and I just wanted to know if any1 has experienced the same:

There was a time where I used to turn on/off the numlock and a blue light would turn on/off and whenever I hit capslock key a blue light turns on/off... well at first the num lock light stopped working and now the caps its not... is it my pc? or are there others with the same problem? if so can it be solved and if it can be solved.. how?
(i think it would be kind of like the wifi light turning orange instead of blue..)

thanks in advance

Hello all.

The manual for the F750 indicates that the dvd is a rw, but I cannot get it to write anything using a variety of programs. Does anyone else have this problem? Or, if anyone can get the dvd to write, could you tell me what program and media you are using? Also, what does XP call the drive (it calls mine a Matshita DVD-RAM drive, but I don't think that is correct).

thanks

Drew Koke;

My XP recognizes the drive as:
Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-860H

I am able to burn DVDs and CDs w/out any trouble... I use the windows built-in burner for data CDs and NeroLite for DVDs and audio CDs

Thanks Sarah. I'm going to give Nero Lite a try. I'm glad to see that your XP identifies the drive the same, as that indicates the problem was probably the end user!

I have downgraded to Windows XP (I have a Presario F762NR) and everything works just fine. Occasionally (once every couple of days) when I am online, the screen just goes dark. The computer is still on and everything, I just can't see anything. I am forced to shut the computer off using the power button. When the laptop reboots, it says that windows has recovered from a serious error (or something to that effect). Has anyone had this same experience? Could it be due to the downgrade?

Go to DriverAgent.com. They have everything that will make XP work if you have converted from Vista, even if it was preinstalled. DriverAgent scans your computer and has downloads for all the drivers you need. I'm still having trouble (which they are trying to work out) with the HD Audio driver, but everything else works perfectly, including the network drivers and the HD video/graphics driver. I can live without sound until the driver gets straightened out. I thought if I couldn't keep the images from rippling on the generic video driver I'd go sufficiently nuts to go back to Vista. Fortunately, D.A. had the driver. It will cost you 25-30 bucks, and it's worth EVERY cent.

Thank you, thank you to Cheryl G. for her post of January 17, 2008. I just downgraded from my preinstalled Vista to XP (that was SOOOOO worth doing, as everything works now). It was a hassle, but worth it, and I was going nuts trying to get sound on this thing. I found Cheryl's post, followed the instructions, and now I have...NOISE! Thank you! I did not know how to do a force install.

Hey guys i finally got the sound to work on my presario. Just look for the following drivers on the inet cx20561_hd_smart_audio221xp and download them.

The url for the file was smthin like :
http://66.98.196.24/mirror0/getfile.php/cx20561_hd_smart_audio221xp.zip?hash=9b0fc4f86ad2996e191fbf3e00ecf6ba&did=1194857&source_url=&lfile=cx20561_hd_smart_audio221xp.zip&time=1222085854&auth=e3d8d4893a34c0990c568c5f5a21415c&file=cx20561_hd_smart_audio221xp.zip

Download then
-Go to Devmgr,
-Right click your Conexant High Definition Audio and
- click update driver.
- Browse my computer for drivers
- Let me pick from list of dev drivers...
- [Have disk]
- Browse to XP32\ and select WiSVHe5.inf
- Next

This should install the drivers and you will immediately feel your lappy come to life with some sound.

Best of luck.

The only that I cannot get now is the Sound, but the Vista drivers will install on XP. I just loaded them and voila...

All this work that has been done is impressive and I have to add my thanks to all those above.

Unfortunately for some reason I was unable to download the megaupload file that Tim made so will do it the hard way :-(

I have 2 questions. I am doing this downgrade on an older machine, a C742TU and am crossing my fingers this won't be an issue in and of itself with the links you all have provided.

The other question is that the .NET2 is an unknown qty to me. If I have to have it, at what stage should I load it?

Thanks in anticipation

Just saw the thread again. I've gotten rid of the Compaq in favor of a smaller laptop that better suits my needs, but the pack with all of the drivers, and instructions is still available until June. After that time, my Megaupload premium account will expire, and I have no plan to extend my membership.

Read the entire thread starting with January 2008. All the information you need is there. Go to driveragent.com. It will cost you around $25 and it will scan your computer and download the appropriate drivers. You may have to force install the sound driver; the directions for doing that are in the thread. I think it was Ginger who submitted that.

My Premium Megaupload account is no longer active, so all files greater than 100MB in size are no longer available. After all of the effort put in by so many people, I wanted to try and insure that these drivers remain available, so I split the driver pack into two pieces. Here are the links for anyone that may need them in the future.

Part one of two (everything except the video driver): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z66B5ZVA

Part two of two (the video driver): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZLA26BWQ

As long as these are downloaded at least once every 30 days, they should remain available.

*On a totally different note, my nephew wanted the F750US laptop upgraded to Windows 7 Professional, and Office 2007. This is a worthwhile upgrade. The laptop is still very fast, the graphics are fantastic, and everything is running beautifully after running Microsoft Update. He's happy as can be, and it's a fine school computer for him.
