How do you know it died? Has it been repaired or diagnosed yet?

When you say "nothing on the screen after startup" does that mean that you were able to see the HP logo on the screen...or when you turn it on, nothing appears?

Did the shop you took it to actually look at it and troubleshoot it? Did HP troubleshoot it? Have you done anything to try and fix it?

First time I called HP support and told about the problem, he said its a classic motherboard problem and it needs to be replaced.. It seems they handle numerous calls with this kind of symptoms..

Local dealer actually diagnosed it and said its a motherboard problem, Nothing comes from VGA port as well. I tried resetting the memory as suggested by hp support and it didn't work.

Grr...sorry mate, wrong thread.

I was hoping there's something else we could try. When you reseated the RAM, did you remove the AC Adapter & Battery? I would assume so...but who knows?

Well...the original issue might be related to this: { http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=116466&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1171738&highlight }

Other than that...it sometimes happens...and I'm sorry about that. I've seen devices fail right out of the box.

I purchased an HP Pavillion Notebook computer july 18, 2007. June of 2008 I had to replace the hard drive, just quit. But it was stilluner warranty. Now the warranty expired 9 days ago and the video processor which is connected to the motherboard went out. I need to replace the motherboard - $140.00 part - no warranty. I've owned many computers in my life and have never had one where the hard drive and the motherboard needs to be replaced in less than a year!

Yes, it seems the on board video by nvidia is the problem. A little over a year and my wife's laptop died. Now the motherboard replacement is $375.00 + labor. HP needs to do something for this problem.

Here is the new news from Nvidia .. last month they disclosed manufacturing flaws..

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13554_3-10020782-33.html?tag=mncol;tback

so will hp update the Enhanced warranty with other models that are facing this problems or will they just ignore the problem?

I just thought i'd update my experience. (see my posts above)

I called HP on the 19th of August and had my PC (which was out of warranty) back/repaired on the 29th -0$ out of my pocket. I'd say that is pretty good service.

They will have to re-image your hard drive.

Hi Craig,

Problem is with Nvidia chip, thats why no display.. Harddisk is fine.. I had called the Extended warranty service,, they are not covering intel/nvidia notebooks and all models listed are for AMD based notebooks..

Vasu,

there was no problem with my hard drive, i was just trying to make the point that they must re-image it when they replace the motherboard due to driver and BIOS changes.

i don't really see where they specify a chip set in the article i linked above (mine is the AMD), but if they say they wont fix it i guess they wont. FYI: my symptoms pretty much matched yours as well as those listed in the article

good luck

I have a dv9230 and JUST got it back from repair. (Motherboard replacement)Problem started with screen display distortion. Mine was 1 yr and 6 mos. old when it occured. Like yours, not too far out of the 1year hp warranty. HP does need to do SOMETHING. This is absolutely ridiculous!!I got lucky because I purchased Circuit City's additional warranty coverage when I purchased my laptop from them.

Why are HP being such scumbags about this problem?

Here's my scenario:

- laptop died w/beg 25th August. Had been having ongoing problems with it for months (blue screen, would get hot, etc).
- Called HP 30 August. Provided them with the laptop's serial & model number (EZ457UAR). Was told it was out of warranty (purchased March 2007).
- That week, I took it to a computer shop - they said the motherboard needed replacing (over £350!).
- Meanwhile, found this forum re extended warranty.
- Called HP on 5 September. Had to direct their technical support person to the warranty website (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3340199&lang=en&docname=c01300427#c01300427_dv90)
- They said their documentation "was out of date" and they'd need to update their links. Was very apologetic & organised for it to be picked up by courier on the following Monday (8th September)
- Was told the laptop would be fixed within 7 - 10 days.
- Got a call today (15th Sept) from the outsourced repairer (ukwgncustomercare@uk.flextronics.com) who told me it was out of warranty. They've had it for a WEEK and have done NOTHING!
- Emailed them with a link to the site stating it was covered under warranty. Have not heard back.
- Called HP to complain (was on hold for 40 minutes) and was again told that it was not under warranty.
- After much discussion, the woman finally agreed to follow my directions and checked out their website.
- Surprise, surprise, there it was, spelled out in black and white: "If your notebook product number is listed in the table and followed by the letter R then your notebook is included in the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement Program."
- She said she still has to "check it out with technical support", and has not called me back yet.

I have the same problem...
dv9335nr, no video, blank screen.. corrupted graphics on external monitor, only boots in safe mode.

This is my history...

-Contacted HP: my warranty expired jun/08
-Realized about the recall, emailed HP again.
-They answered me, and asked me for my address to send me a box for free repair.
-I waited for the CSO and traking number for 4 days and nothing.
-Emailed HP again, and they replied the warranty had expired (again).
-Emailed HP once again, sending the link for the recall.
-HP answered the recall was only for AMD equipped notebooks.
-Emailed HP again, and told them it was a common issue on intel notebooks as well.
-They "apologized for any inconvenience"

I suggest that anyone who has the same problem and can see their model number on the list on the website keep persisting. There is a disconnect between what the UK thinks is covered and what is on the US vs UK websites (my laptop was bought in Australia, but is a US model and I'm now living in the UK).
The customer service staff aren't the brightest in the world, and I got fed some stories from them... but... after getting fairly angry and phoning the woman constantly to get updates... my laptop was returned to me yesterday, and has been fixed!

Contact HP and calls them many times with many arguments. Nope nothings, they need USD400 to repair it.

Now, that laptop is ready for a drop test for my student. :)

i have a dv9000, EZ345AV, core 2 duo, nvidia chip, and my motherboard died after 1 year and a couple months while i was looking at internet. tried calling hp technical support, we found out that the motherboard had to be replaced due to the failing GPU.
when i checked to see if EZ345AV was on the list, it wasn't there. the RL015AV is a similar model to mine, and that IS there, so I don't understand why mine isnt.

if the list is not fully updated yet, please add EZ345AV to the list of problematic laptops based on the NVIDIA gpu failing, due to a mistake on NVIDIA/HP's part.

EZ345AV, dv9200 CTO pavilion notebook.

please, please, consider adding this model to the limited warranty list, as I am nearly positive the cause has to deal with this issue!!

I have a dv9235. Purchased 2/2007. In August 2008, the screen went black. It was the same problem being discussed here. It has the NVidia graphics card. First HP told me to do a battery drain, then resit the memory. All I get is a black screen with some lines. So HP says sorry its out of warranty and it will cost you 431.00 to replace the system board. Ok, fine. It would cost me double to get a new laptop. I got the laptop back today. It worked for an hour-Same problem. Not only do I want my 431.00 back, but my total cost of the laptop. Its defective, whether its in warranty or not.
I think there should be a mandatory recall.

I just want to say my EZ345AV laptop also died a few months out of warranty with all the same issues, and HP support said there's nothing they can do. They told me they add models to the extended warranty list when they get a certain amount of complaints about that model. So, just make sure you get actually talk to someone there and maybe they'll start adding more models to the list.

Same for me with a dv9500t... started getting blue pixels, BSOD crashes referencing nvid files and it finally went to a black screen on startup and wouldn't get past it or would just continue to reboot itself to the same blank screen. Could boot in safe mode and uninstalling the drivers would allow me to start in normal mode. Of course, because it started, now HP's tech support refused to fix it. I had to reinstall their drivers and prove to them that it wouldn't start up before they would send a box out (2 hrs on the phone there). And oh yeah, they mailed the box to someone else and fought with me that my computer is registered to someone else (another hour on the phone reexplaining the problem to another tech)?!? Huh? I have the receipt and the receipt for the HP support contract which are all registered to me so how they botched that is beyond me? So the good news is that the repair was relatively quick (4 days turn-around) and for me with the service plan, didn't cost anything. Have to pick it up at FedEx today to see if they actually fixed it though!

Yes, I had a similar problem. Motherboard died 3 weeks before 1 year warranty expired. I had it replaced in June 08. I purchased laptop through best buy so I had to have them service the laptop. It took them 6 weeks to figure out the problem, didn't compensate me in any way as the laptop is my business pc. The motherboard that was used to replace the bad one just died on me 2 days ago...

Is anyone at HP aware of this issue?

I purchased my laptop at Best Buy. I took it back to them for repair as it was still under warranty. They are an authorized HP repair outlet.

I am waiting to hear back from them. Their standard turnaround time is 2 weeks for shipping a product that needs parts replaced.

I am not happy with that as it is the second time within 3 months that I've had to have hardware parts replaced.

here i post an attachment which contains several articles about NVIDIA's defective GPUs...please read them carefully...become aware of the FACTS...and then...make your own conclusions...

Those who have read my other posts in these forums already know what i mean....

And what I mean is that the problem here is with Nvidia's defective GPUs becoming faulty and screwing-up our laptops...and it doesn't matter if your CPU is Intel or AMD...and it DOESN'T MATTER if your warranty had expired a day or a year before the GPU became faulty...We have the RIGHT to get our laptops REPAIRED (or REPLACED with a unit with similar or better features) and having a non DEFECTIVE nor FAULTY GPU of similar or better characteristics absolutely FREE of any charge...

This is almost certainly the NVIDIA graphics chip. There is a known problem with this chip but HP are only listing certain model numbers for free repair. You may, if you keep trying to switch the machine on (on mine it took about 25 times!), eventually get a visual .. if you do, go to safe mode and immediately disable the NVIDIA driver. Your graphics will be basic VGA but you will then have access to your machine without it crashing. I'm about to take the issue up with HP.

check the hp site to see if your p/n matches those eligible for free repair. I suspect it won't be listed. Write to the MD at the UK hp office, the more complaints the better chance of getting more p/n's listed. What you describe is exactly the same as on my machine. Try booting many times then leave it on running for half a day (press return first to accept the HD check - even though there's no graphics it will be running). Switch off and boot again. If you get a display .. disable the NVIDIA driver straight away. Don't be tempted to enable it again, if you do it may last another day or so but WILL fail again.
You will have crap graphics but at least be able to access your machine whilst you complain.

Wow. Looks like this is a global issue. I've been further aggrevated by Best Buy.

The first time I brought in the laptop, they had it two weeks, sent it back and didn't repair it properly. The local Geek Squad guy checked it when it came back only to discover that when he powered it up, it did the same thing. The tech who looked at it in Tennesee just re-seeded the video chip and sent it back! It ended up being in Tennessee for an additional 4 weeks (they claimed they had to wait for a new motherboard).

I use my laptop (my only pc) for my business. I told the people at Best Buy this and asked if they could at least provide me with a loaner while the pc was being serviced, they said no, that wasn't Best Buy's policy. I even filed a complaint on their website and have yet to receive a response.

I've been having to rent a laptop and this is now the 8th week I've had to rent one this year @ $45 a week. While I will be able to claim it as a business expense, I still think it's very poor business for Best Buy not to provide some sort of assistance under such circumstances.

I guess I am also.

DV9407NR P/N KB189UA

I got a blue screen and then the laptop went totally dead.

No fan, no disk activity, no external monitor. I can charge the battery because I see the light is on the plug and the front light is on for a few seconds. I tried resetting the memory, and resetting the power by removing the battery and holding the power button down as per HP troubleshooting.

The 1yr HP warranty has expired by a few months I think. But somewhere I have an extended warranty purchased thru CompUSA and turned over to another company.

I just got word from Best Buy that since my I brought in my laptop for the second repair 97 days after it was repaired, they will not replace it for free. They said that 90 days was HP's policy and that was all they had to honor.

I am going to take up the customer service issue with higher ups at Best Buy.

I am also going to contact HP directly about them replacing the motherboard without charge and send it directly to them for repair.

Hey everyone, I've been dealing with the same problems for over 2 months now. dv9335nr out of warranty, video died completely (it was a progressive failure, artifacting, to blue screening, to total failure took about 2 weeks). I've communicated with Carlos from a few posts above on nVidia's site, and it appears as if this is a massive problem with the design of the laptop. I took mine apart last night and noticed HP used a thermal tape to connect the GPU to the heatsink/heatpipe and that tape was dried and cracked, clearly it was unable to handle the temperatures produced by the GPU core. This is a MANUFACTURING DEFECT, not a result of wear and tear or usage. If HP had spent a few pennies more per unit and used a decent thermal compound, this wouldn't even be an issue. I'm going to call up HP today and see if there is anything they can do, which I'm sure there isn't. I refuse to pay $400+ USD to get this problem solved, when it was a problem caused by THEIR manufacturing standards (or in this case, their lack thereof.) We'll see what happens.

I got my laptop back from Best Buy and contacted HP Customer Support regarding the failure of the replacement motherboard 97 days after it was installed.

The customer service rep that I spoke to said that she had to get authorization to do so, but thought most likely HP would make an exception and replace the mb free of charge.

So far, so good. Will keep everyone posted.

Finally got an answer back to my written complaint to the MD (UK HP Head Office) that despite the well known issues with this chip, the s/n of my computer was not listed for free repair. I even offered to purchase an extended guarantee but was refused because it's over 12 months old.

My answer came from a customer service representative by telephone since the MD is 'not customer facing'. Surprise .. he couldn't do anything apart from spout the company line .. stating 'they can't do anything unless the p/n is listed. He couldn't give details of how it got listed apart from stating .. they couldn't have had enough complaints about this p/n. (Yeah ok)

Anyone recommend how to take this further in the UK?

Mike,

Your p/n isn't in there because it is more likely an Intel laptop. The AMD's are the only notebooks "affected" by the "problem" right now. Whether that be because HP and AMD are in bed together and splitting repair costs, I couldn't say.

I just want to follow up on my previous posts. To recap my situation, the original motherboard in the laptop was replaced under warranty - the replacement part only lasted 97 days before dying. Although the standard warranty on a replacement part is only 90 days, HP is empathetic to this situation and has agreed to replace the motherboard at no charge as a one time courtesy to me as a customer. My laptop presently does not show up on any of the defective model lists.

I have a Pavilion dv9260nr which I purchased on Mother's Day in 2007. By November the laptop cooked itself, frying the onboard video card. This laptop was always too hot to even put on your lap and even with a laptop tray the thing was uncomfortable to use for long periods of time. So when the video went, I called HP and since my laptop was still under warranty, they sent me a box to have it sent in for repair. They originally told me that it would take a week for them to fix it and get it back to me, but it took them over a month in actuality. They told me they didn't even have any parts in the country to fix it. This was all the while while dealing with tech support people who would frequently disconnect our calls, constantly put you on hold for long periods of time for no reason. I also used the online "live" tech support to find out the status of my repair in which they played games and often got disconnected.

Now it is October 2008 and guess what??? My mother board has FRIED again!!!! And now after about a total of SIX HOURS on the phone with tech support... I am waiting for a case manager to call me back... I'll probably be dead before I get a call back!

This is obviously a well known problem known by all parties involved and all HP can say is that I have to pay for parts and the PHONE CALL to order the parts...

Just wanted to let everyone know that I received my repaired laptop with a new motherboard within 5 business days of shipping it to HP.

I am very happy to report that the board was replaced free of charge. They were very empathetic to the fact that the first replaced motherboard died only 97 days after being installed and replaced it without issue.

My exact model (which apparently is not on the list of defective NVDIA chips) is the dv9535nr.

Good luck to everyone else here.

Hi,
I have Dv9335nr , RV116UA and when I contacted HP about this , they said the model is not covered and they can not do any thing .
What should I do ? I tried to talk to their managaer also but no use . They are really very unprofessional .

My laptop was also a dv9335nr and about two weeks ago I started getting vertical lines on my screen and then it would go black, then fix itself and tell me my nvlddmkm driver had a problem but fixed itself. Within a week, lines were showing up horizontally as well.

Talked to tech support, and after putting all my important files on my external harddrive, I followed their instructions to reset to factory settings. Everything seemed fine, but then the lines showed up and then finally my screen wouldn't show anything at all. My QuickPlay and volume controls and pause/play buttons all light up, but the screen remains black.

I bought the computer in May 2007. My warranty was expired. I purchased it at BestBuy, so I took it to the geek squad and they said they could run a $200 diagnostic test, but it didn't look like that would work so they could send it out to HP for me for another $300-500. I decided it was not worth it.

My dad's work buddy fixes computers for a living, so I dropped it off with him, and he offered to take a look at it. He's going to have me buy a new motherboard and he'll replace it for me.

If this does not fix the problem I will not be replacing anything or attempting another repair.

At this point, I would rather send my own money and try and get it fixed than have to deal with HP tech support one more time. I had an issue with billing escalated to a case manager, and he was great, but the standard tech support was absolutely no help to me at all and seemed oblivious to any sort of graphic card or motherboard problems in their products.

Mike,

It's hit or miss as far as getting your notebook repaired for free, even more so outside of the US. My best advice is be persistent but polite... the angrier you tend to get with Support, Supervisors, Case Managers, etc, the faster they are to say no and send you on your way.

I have a dv9539nr, P/N GA339UA, Nvidia , Intel that "died" after 14 mos 25 days. Returned to Best Buy, was told it was the motherboard and to call HP, 800-HPINVENT. I was told in the first 90 seconds of my call to send it back and they would fix. Then came the bombshell, cost $398.00. My question is when are they going to recognize this problem and extend the warranty? Can we, as a group, do anything?

I have a Pavilion DV9000, product #RL015AV. It starting having trouble about 3 weeks before it finally wouldn't start up at all. It is 1 year and 1 month old. At any given time, doesn't matter what applications are running, the screen goes crazy, lines everywhere, then grey, and the system hangs. The only way to power it down is to hold down the power button. Tonight it stopped starting back up. It sounds like it's trying, over and over, but the screen stays black and there is no sign of life. Only the sound of a struggling disk. Phone support was not helpful--told me that my warranty was up and I had to pay to extend it. So I went online for a free live chat with HP Support, and she said they would fix it for free. They are sending all the packing materials for the return of the laptop, and they claim to turn it around in 3-5 business days, free of charge. That's my story. Hope it helps someone. Being a small business owner, this is a serious drag and it really impedes my ability to get anything done.

I don't know if this will work for everyone but I've been running my DV9000 in VGA mode for several weeks now .. occasionally it black screens on boot but I manage to get it back as follows.

Switch on and off about 10 times (wait 10 secs after switching on each time to see if display appears - (if it does skip to next paragraph) on the 10th time leave on (still black screen) and press the return key to accept the 'check disc' option .. the hard drive light should light .. you may have to press the return key again once or twice in a few minutes for it to continue to windows.
once booted (still black screen) leave on to get hot (usually about an hour) .... Switch it off and on again and you may get video. If not let it fully boot again until hard drive light stops (even when pressing return key) then switch off and on again.

When you do get video goto safe mode (ideally) and disable the Nvidia driver through the control panel - device manager. Once disabled - re-boot and it should display in crummy VGA mode but it will be more stable and allow you to retrieve files and use your computer etc.

Don't be tempted to switch back to enable the NVidia driver .. this will crash very soon after!

Let me know it it works

I had no luck with HP phone support, but I had luck with the live online chat (it's free). The online support rep told me that even though my warranty had expired, my model is covered under an extended warranty due to known issues. They sent me all the packaging, I shipped the notebook to them, and they fixed it and sent it back the next day. The turnaround was excellent, however they re-imaged the disk, repaired the system board and the heatsink fan, and all my data was gone. Luckily I removed the hard drive, attached it to another computer, and copied all my important files before I shipped the notebook to HP for repair. I cannot stress this enough: If this is happening to you, back up everything right away. It's just a matter of time before it won't boot back up again. Even if HP does the repair for free and returns your notebook to you quickly, as they did for me, you will still go through the pain of losing all your data and starting from scratch. Back up now!

Funny, my Pavilion DV9500 notebook died just under one year old and at first they weren;t going to honor the warranty and fix it for free. EVEN THOUGH it was a defect in materials because it overheats! I got them to honor the warranty and fix it at no cost to me, but now, three months later, it is acting up again. This time I can power on, but have a blank white screen and nothing else. They wanted me to pay over $600.00 the first time and over $400.00 now, before they will even ship me a box to send it in!! I am livid.

Since I had problems with the notebook overheating and blowing up before, I figured it's all happening again. I called and spoke to someone in the tech support division who told me I had to pay over $400 before he would ship a box to me. UNREAL! I asked why I would have to pay that much in order to fix a problem that wasn't my fault and he said to me, "some things go your way and some things don't. This time it didn't happen to go your way".

I contacted KCRA channel 3 news (Call 3 for action) because I think it is completely wrong and totally ufair for them to not repair this notebook and fix it for free since there is obviously a flaw in the machine that is causing it to die when it's only a year old. The notebook cost me $1200.00 in the first place and I was told is top of the line. Not in my opinion. And I cannot see having to pay $400 for repairing my notebook when it died because of a defect in materials. The company is responsible for this one! I'll make sure of it.

By the way, I see from reading this thread that there is an extended warranty for people dealing with their notebooks dying but the man I talked to on the phone didn't mention it to me and I qaulify for it! (I think) But did he bother telling me? Heck no. They gotta make that dollar any way they can I guess.

Anyone interested in talking to me about this please email me!

Today I no longer have a display. It was fine this morning, turned it on this afternoon and nothing. I tried powering it off, removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds but that did not help. I even removed the laptop bezel, disconnected and removed the inverter cables, put things back, reseated the memory, reseated the hard drive, etc. and no difference. When powering it on, all the led lights come on, hard drive spins up and I can hear the fans, just no display. I do not get any POST beeps, seems to start fine, just no display at all.

I called HP and they said that my particular model is not included in the additional year warranty extension, which I think is complete BS based on all the posts on here and several other forums I've read.

If anyone has any contacts at HP that can assist to get our models added to the extended warranty, please help!

In response to my previous post, as well as everyone else's. I had my laptop dropped off at a friends who fixes computers for a living. He ordered me a replacement motherboard, but eventually said I would have to replace the machine. He was unable to order the graphics chip separately, and the new motherboard didn't come with one. My chip was fried. Along with constant overheating during the year and a half I had the laptop, apparently cat hair was also a culprit. It got sucked into the fans, partially due to faulty design, partly due to setting the computer on a bed/blanket on occasion.

Anyways, I've given up hope and placed an order for a new MacBook last week. It should get to me tomorrow. This experience has not turned me off of Windows; I've been entertaining the idea of switching to Mac for quite some time. It has, however, turned me off of HP laptops from now on, unless they step up and decided to include our models into the new warranty extension, and repair and/or replace the laptops free of charge.

About taking the hard drive out before you send it back, they told me specifically not to remove the hard drive. They wanted me to ship the Notebook back with the hard drive.

I already posted about the result (they re-imaged the disk, among other things, and I lost everything), so just make sure you do a back up before you send it back.

If your system is already unresponsive and you haven't done a back up (like me), remove the hard drive, connect it to something else, and copy over all your important files.

Just be aware that they ask you to send it back with the hard drive, and they will return it clean, without any of your data, and with a new user account called "Test."

I just talked with an HP case manager and he told me to take it to Geek Squad and they in turn would send it to the HP repair shop ($34 for shipping) and if HP determines that the problem is due to their faulty GPU's, that they would fix it for free and refund me the shipping charge. Now, my question is how do I know they don't just do something else to my computer to make it seem like its another problem other than the GPU, just to get off the hook and charge me $400? I think this case manager just wanted to get rid of me. Do I trust these guys will be honest? What other option would I have?

I, too, have a dv9000z laptop (GD545AV), with the AMD CPU/nVidia chipset, which is 1.5 years old. Even though it is not on the 'repair list', it does get HOT on the bottom of the unit. So, it is advisable to NOT place it directly on your lap, or directly onto any surface, as this will create even more heat, which will eventually kill the motherboard.
I use a Lian-Li 17" 2-fan laptop cooler which blows cool air onto the bottom of the laptop, thereby dissipating the heat generated by the system.
I have seen people set their laptops directly down onto a couch or bed, and totally prevent the fans from venting the heat generated inside the laptops. And then they wonder why it "died".
IMHO, this effect would cause the cpu/heatsink thermal paste/tape to dry out and cause even quicker death for the motherboard.
My laptop works fine, but I plan on disassembling it soon and replace the thermal paste with a top-quality type, just in case.
If the laptop's motherboard/cpu does die from heat exhaustion, I will probably recycle it, or replace the motherboard/cpu with a new motherboard/Intel cpu/Intel Video chipset, instead of the AMD cpu/nVidia video chipset.
If I had known of these issues earlier, I would have never purchased this unit, because of the possibility of problems down the road.
Good luck to everyone.

YES!!!! I have a pavilion DV9000 that I bought a little over a year ago and just last week I started experiencing a problem. On Thursday morning Dec 18. 2008 I went to my computer, which was in a "power save or sleep mode" and when I tried to bring it up it wouldn't come up.
Things that would happen:
The lights above the keypad, for speakers, DVD and other controls would come on, the fan would start up but the screen would stay blank. Then after about 10 seconds the computer would shut off, the fan would stop, the lights going off. Then it would try to start up again with the same situation happening over and over until I unplugged it.
I have taken to a computer repair shop that troubleshot the issue and diagnosed it to be a problem with the motherboard. They said I would need a new one.
Again this is after 1 year of having it. Looking at this forum it seems to be a common issue. Can anyone please help get it fixed?!?

Another motherboard dead...and outside of the 1-year warranty by 5 months!

I purchased hp Pavilion dv9230 notebook in April 2007. In September, while on the internet, the motherboard died. Confirmed my fears with a tech at Circuit City [did not buy the extended warranty] and a laptop specialty shop. The replacement part is $461 plus about $80 labor!

I contacted hp support and initially was told by Jay in India that hp would cover the repair/replacement...in his words "it wouldn't cost me a dollar!". The next day he called back to say he was mistaken and hp would not cover it.

I checked and my model is not on the list of many that are covered under the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement.

Seems that with all that I've read on this subject that this problem permiates the dv9000 series and NOT just the AMD models.

HP should step up and do what's right. How many of us do they need to hear from before including the other affected models?

FYI - Also in 4/07 I bought another hp - the Pavilion a1730n desktop adding a nvidia e-Gforce 7300 GT card...2 weeks ago the card fried, the power source faild and the the hard drive needed to be replaced. I've had Compaqs never had a major problem.

I have a dv9335NR that died in April. After researching the issue, I decided to try to fix the computer myself. I took apart the whole computer to get to the mother board. Then I heated the Navidia IC to reflow the solder connections. I put the whole computer back together with two screws extra (not bad). Now the computer works again, but I don't know for how long. This took me 4 hours to do, so I would not reccomend doing this unless you really know what you are doing. I am an electrical engineer with the proper equipment.
This issue was not only known, but HP continued to build and sell product with this defect.

Wow, this is crazy, i think every dv9000 (mine is a pavillion dv9420US) is going to fail whithin the first year and a half. I bought mine a little over 1yr ago. Now I got a blank screen-->called HP-->Serial # RL015AAR is not cover for free repair and they want $430 to repair it. Serial # RLO15AV is cover under the recall. what is the difference? it is the same problem with the same symptoms, we got to do something, it is obously not our fault, i paid $1250 USD for this laptop and it only lasted for 1 yr and 4 months. Anybody has any info that can help?

Well I finally got a response from HP that might open some windows I hope.
Mine died after 14 months I've been calling/e-mail HP since the end of October but still no help with the extended service because I have the Intel processor. I finally did a live chat to be told after a hour that I was not under warranty (really).
They sent me a survey which I gave all 0's to and explained my situation.
Today I got a call and an E-mail from HP stating, "Yes there were issues with the motherboard for the unit I purchased (dv9340) and EVERYONE who had purchased a unit with a defective motherboard (and any defects related) were entitled to a 1 time service enhancement for a free repair". It was good for 15 months but they're telling me that my 15 months expired December 1st. I knew that early on which is why I've been calling since the end of October so there not going to get off that easy.
She also states that all case managers have been fully empowered by HP handle and correct this issue.
At least they're admitting it now for all of these units but as usual still trying to wiggle out of it.
I hope this helps someone else in their
quest to get this corrected. She actually left her phone # which I'll call tomorrow.

After seeing 1 or 2 people having some level of success getting HP to send them a repair box for free I tried calling today and spent over 30 minutes on the phone with the regular rep and a customer service manager and still got no where. Mine is the DV9000T CTO EZ379AV with the Intel processor and of course the Nvidia GPU. I had a lengthy discussion with support/CSR today asking how they can possibly exclude the Intel processor model from the extended recall when Apple, Dell and several of the forums here show over 100+ examples of customers with the exact same issue as the AMD models.

The CSR's response was that he is sorry, but only suggested that I pay for 2 weeks of phone support at 49.99 plus tax or 1 year of phone support at 99. He said after troubleshooting with the tech support rep that they may be able to determine if it is indeed the same problem and could possibly offer to repair the laptop at no cost.

I understand that they need to determine the problem is the same before replacing the motherboard, but if they're really interested in helping the customer getting to the root of the problem, they would at least offer the support for free in this instance. I've already spoken with online support a few months back to no avail, so what makes me think paying for support will help. Ridiculous!

I work in IT and really am just beside myself in disbelief that we are all being completely ignored. It speaks volumes for HP and their support system and since I work in IT and have a direct say in what hardware vendor we choose. Do they not realize that not only are they losing existing customers, they're losing future business and on a larger scale than I think they realize!

Mine just died.

its a DV9000T with intel processor, exactly the same thing as everyone else, 1 year and 4 months and it dies.

The problem is with the GPU, not AMD or Intel, so why is HP excluding us from the repair?

What can we do to get HP to listen?

I have the same laptop (EZ345AV, dv9000 a.k.a. 9200). I purchased the laptop in May 07. My motherboard had to be replaced in March 08. My warranty ran out in May 08. Needless to say, my laptop died a few days ago. I called HP technical support and spent an hour on the phone discussing how my laptop is not covered by the limited service warranty. They wanted me to pay the $400 to get it fixed. I told them it was out of the question; especially since I paid $12XX for it and it has failed twice within a period of 1.5 years. Unacceptable! Finally, they offered to fix it for free. HP is well aware of the issue with the video cards and cooling issues. Luckily, I am getting it fixed for free...but how long will that fix last? HP needs to acknowledge the rest of its customers and add models to the list on the limited service warranty. I am a little disappointed with how this situation is being handled.

Hi everyone,
just to add my opinion, first, the dv90xx series has grossly inadequate cooling for these laptops. It has only ONE fan and 2 heat fins to cool this unit, compared to a zd80xx series which has THREE fans and 4 heat fins. One of the biggest challanges for laptops is to keep it from overheating,as the fans blow off the heat, the 2nd biggest problem occures, that being that the heat fins get pluged up with dust. In the zd series all the fans do not kick in at once, as more heat builds, a 2nd and/or 3rd fan starts up. So as the main fan starts to become inefficient due to fin blockage, the others will kick on faster, so you have a back-up in place as it were.
On the dv90xx, the unit itself is thinner and heat will build faster putting more demand on the fan to blow off the heat, however, you have only 2 heat fins and 1 fan unit and even more heat than the zd series will generate due to the demands placed on the MB because of a bloated operating system (vista) along with the ever demanding resource hogging programs and along with the bigger anti-virus progs, all these things generate heat on the system.
So, newer model, more memory, faster cpu's, faster video cards with more built-in memory, larger lcd's with higher resolutions all = more heat, and yet only 1 fan with 2 heat fins to keep things cool.
If the manufactures don't come up with a better way to cool these laptops down, the problems will just continue to grow. The answer will be, back to PC's where the problem of heat will be easier to manage.

Same problem. Happened last night DV9000. 7600 GPU. Intel processor. NO use going through the details since so many people have described the symptoms. Faulty thermal design on HP's part. Faulty GPU on Nvidia's part. No wonder that either company is not going to stand-up and take responsibility.

This is very unfortunate for both companies in the loss of so many very good customers.

I bought my dv9000 at Courts in Singapore for SGD 3,300 w extra RAM, in July 2007. It lasted for 14 months before dying with vertical black and white stripes. I've always had the beeps, but I could restart the notebook on second try, so it never occured to me to send it for servicing within the first year.

I sent it for servicing and was charged SGD 490.68 for the repairs (the warranty had expired by 2 months).By the way, it took HP 2 months to fix and return back, in November 2008.

After only a few hours of use the notebook died again with the same symptoms! But now I have done my research and I am aware that HP knowingly sold me a defective item.

I gave it back to HP yesterday, just in time before the 3 months repair warranty expires.
I intend to fight and win my case in Singapore so I'll keep you posted on the progress and resolution.

I have posted on other similar forums, and am presently taking legal action against the retailer that I bought my dv9299 and dv9200 from. One is covered by the extended warranty from HP, but despite having 2 new motherboards put in, has failed again.
The other has an Intel chip, and is not covered.
In total, both machines cost me £2500, and according the the English Sales Of Goods Act 1979 (amended), have an inherent defect which cannot be repaired or replaced, therefore, I can apply for a partial refund from my original retailer.
Will let you know how I get on.
Absolutely useless dealing with HP at the moment. Even if you manage to get a 'fix' - trust me - I will not stay fixed!

First off, we need to accept that HP or any other business will never make the "right" decision unless it coincides with their business. That's just how it is.

If anybody finds a sort of temporary fix for a black/white receding mixed colors of display right after turning it on, please share.

Mod: dv9535nr
Graphics card: NVIDIA GE FORCE 8600 something something

Sometimes I think its secretly booting up. And though my external monitor doesn't pick up any activity, the memory LED flickers and I can get some response from my wireless switch and keyboard. The thing is, I have no idea if I have already accidentally stuck it on some important loading process and turned it off in the middle of it.

So, please help.

For the record, I too am also having issues with my DV9260us RP243U hp laptop that I purchased in late 2007, so yes its out of warranty and not covered on the list!

Initially it was failing on the NV driver for windows (Vista) - blue screen.

Linux worked so long as I didnt load the accelerated Nvidia driver - resulting in my fancy graphics 17" HDDVD laptop being a basic color terminal (ie an non accelerated desktop, vesa driver I think).

Tonight it finally died totally - blank screen, about 1 month after symptoms started showing.

So I called HP to at least see what they can do. It wasnt very helpful as it is not covered as I suspected.
Any repair money is now probably best spent on a new non HP & non Nvidia laptop!

Cheers

PG.

PS: this is my first laptop ever to die, I usually buy a new one each year or so. I still have several old ones that have been given to family going back 10+ years that continue to work, but admittedly slowly (dell's & sony's).

My m/b (dv9035nr) died two weeks ago. HP customer service told that warranty expired and "you have installed the applications which are not been supported by the graphics card installed on your Notebook, the graphic card is malfunctioned." They want $400+ for new m/b plus repair.
Problem with this m/b is that graphics chip package can't withstand multiple turn-on/off cycles when temperature changes. HP doesn't want to recognize this problem and do anything.

In January 2007, I purchased an HP DV9xxx series laptop from Sam's Club. Thankfully I did get the extended warranty from Sam's.

Few months after purchase the Wireless network card went out on me. That didn't bother me much since I did have a backup Wireless Card and used that.

After a year from purchase, the Video went out. Called HP, they took me through thier troubleshooting and sent it back for repairs.
Got the laptop back and it worked perfect....For a little more then a year.

In Nov. 2008 same thing happened. No video. I called Sam's club Warranty Service. They were very helpful, walked me through the troubleshooting etc. and as usual, had to send the laptop in for service. Microtechinc. Sent the laptop back unrepaired, with the explaination that HP knew of the issue, and has an extended warranty service for the issues this series of laptops are having. So, I call HP again.
They do the same troubleshooting, and then finally agree to take the laptop in. It was almost a fight to get them to do that.

I recieved the laptop back, and in mid Feb. 2009, it happens Again, for the THIRD TIME.

Sam's Club again sets up service for the laptop with Microtech. Microtech returns the laptop unrepaired(again) and tells me to call HP(again).

I call HP. HP says "your system board has been replaced under this extended service back in November, so it no longer qualifies for the service any longer." I fight with the Tech Support on the phone. He finally sets up a repair ticket for the laptop.

A day after I got the Return Box from HP, I called Sam's Club, explained what HP told me, and set the Service Request up with with them.

Hopefully it will stay fixed this time.

If you own a laptop you must disable the following

1. windows updates
2. hp product updates
3. any other update software especialy
if it relates to BIOS

hp automatic update has details about your serial number, it knows when your laptop runs out of warranty then it will update it with a bad BIOS which will give you a start-up no display. so then you either use hp's repair service or buy a new hp laptop.

just ask yourself why every motherboard dead related issue always happens or most of the time happens just after 1 year.

If you've read this before, I apologize for the cut and paste from another posting, but I share the same problem that you guys are talking about.

Hi, I have a 18 month old(but seldom used) DV9200CTO(EZ345AV) That was fine when used. I had been using AutoCad on it and it had no problem with 3D or rendering. Then I loaded Revit 2009 on it and it started to fritz out, freez, go to black, and then come up with a "Recovered from Video Card failure" or something to that effect. And then it just went BLACK! It will not restart, the harddrive light shows some activity, but really only a heartbeat, and I can see that the backlite is on, and thats it. I have been told by HP that I need to replace the mother board and Video Card. I have been given some conflicting information as to which card they would replace into the machine. As stated I beleave there's a NVDIA card in this, and one of the service reps said they would put in an Intel card(or is the chipset in mine Intel, I don't know and can't find out) They also said that it would be replaced with 512 MB of VRAM, I thought mine was loaded with more(I could be wrong. It would do this for almost any software after I loaded Revit(directly from AutoDesk). It may be totally unrelated to Revit, but just a coincidence. Anyway, I have been told it's out of warrentee, I can accept that, but I have seen that there are a lot of problems with some of the NVDIAVideo Drivers, and I beleave my 9200 has a Ge Force 7600 in it. I cant tell.

I have been quoted a $398 all inclusive MotherBoard and Video fix for this, and I have no other choice but to do it. I am a little suspect that the Card is just a bad card do to all the activity I see in the forums about Pavillions and NVDIA Ge Force cards, but I am no expert, and I really just want my Notebook back. I would like to get some more information about Parts being replaced, without just blindly sending it in. I don't even really know whats exactly in the machine(it's dead for the moment) and I never got an itemized receipt from HP of exactly what options I had configured my machine with(is it possible to get that after the fact?)

Anyway, I would appreciate any information with this than you.

This is a cut and paste from a previous post also, but if HP sees numerous threads from hundreds of users maybe they will actually provide a free fix...

I purchased a DV9000 in December of 08. The computer would not boot unless you tapped on the drives, and the it would acutally boot about 1 out of 3 times. I found the recall info and called about it. HP agreed to warranty the computer, sent me a box, and "repaired" the computer. I sent the thing off on December 17th or so and got it back on the 30th. I thought great - no problems, good service, etc. The computer worked fine until March 17th, 2009.

On March 17th, all was going fine until the screen turned pink, and then went blank. I shut it down and tried to reboot it. The BIOS "boot" screen was somewhat pixellated, as was the actual BIOS screen.

When the computer boots, the inital screens (Compaq, and loading Windows) are pixellated and then the screen goes blank. The disk light stays on for as long as the power is on. When rebooted into safe mode, the screen is readable, but pixellated. I've tried setting the resolution to both 800x600 and 1024x768, but it still boots into windows with a blank screen.

Today, I called the 800 number and gave them my info and the above story. The response was "Sorry, the 90 day reair warranty is up. You'll have to pay to get it fixed."

Apparently HP fixed it with one of their defective motherboards and now they want me to pay for a new one.

I think it's pretty crappy to fix a defective computer with 107 day parts and only give a 90 day warranty.

Anyone at HP care to commment?

The bios upgrade they are recommending has your fan running 100% of the time. Do not install it! This is a bandaide attempt at addressing the real issue which is a manufacturer defect with respect to the NVIDIA chip installed on the system board. NVIDIA *made* HP aware of this issue back in August of 2007!

I have the same problem (2nd time). Purchased one of these lemons in 7/2007 and in 12/2007 display dies. Replaced system board while under warantee and 1 year later the display dies again. Now that it is out of warantee they want ~ $400.00 to replace again. What are you to do when the fan eventually burns out?

Then what do you do when the fan burns out?

Why does not anyone from HP post here and offer 2 cents of advice instead of simply policing the site and removing incriminating information?

couple months ago I lost my wireless, called HP and they told me I was out of warranty. I called HP today because my Pavilion dv9000 isn't starting up, the blue LED buttons blink for a second but no life, the screen never comes up.
I just got off the phone with HP support and was surprised that they told me that my 24 month warranty for this recall was expired March 2009, that's last month. I couldn't believe what I heard. I've been without wireless for months now and now that my laptop finaly dies on me they tell me that I could've actually have it fixed???

Hey Ranj, you can get your laptop repaired for completely free, even the shipping paid by HP, even if you don't have warranty.

If they told you differently they are counting on your ignorance of the fact that there are thousands of people with the same issue. I have a dv9000 as well and they said they will fix if for free and it is well over the warranty.

April 25, 2009 at 12:40am PST my dv 9335 nr went dark, and has not come back to life. Same blank screen with the cyclic reboot that does nothing...I have not been able to POST since the INTEL BASED HP dv9335nr went blank. Oh yeah, it also has the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 GPU, but you all know that.

At first, I just thought it was my time to have some bad luck, no harm no foul. But I really wanted to know why my laptop suddenly up and died after 19 months (perhaps a record...) of ownership.

As I searched, I started finding THESE threads, and now I am getting rather upset in how HP is IGNORING this PANDEMIC issue with it's INTEL based NVIDIA gpu machines.

I will be watching this thread intently. Good luck all, and fight the good fight.

BTW HP, I'll be calling you tomorrow....

I have a DV9310CA with NVIDIA chip. Wireless gone after 12 months, then, it would not power up after 20 months.

HP has sent a box for returning it for repair last week. I have recieved this back this Monday. It is working now, but it is hot to the touch near the cooling fan which is constantly on. I hope they have not just replaced the faulty motherboard with a board of the original design, i.e. with the same problematic NVIDIA chip.

My serial number was not on the list under the enhanced extended warranty.

Hello everyone,

I have a dv9230 pavilion and the motherboard died last month. Unfortunately (for me, not for HP), my computer is not under the extended service. I paid a lot for this computer and it's really expensive to fix it. Do you have any suggestions? Anything will help. Have any one paid to replace the motherboard? Thanks

New motherboard will fail also. It is a design flaw.

Well I thought I would add my story to this cavalcade of horrors.

I bought my DV9200 (EV345AV) in Oct 2007. Within 2 weeks the left hinge busted. I put up with it for a while, and when I finally went to see if I could get it fixed under warranty, I could not. They told me because I had an American model, I could not get it fixed being that I am in Canada. So, the next time I was in the States on holiday, I packed my laptop with me to see if I could get it serviced. After fighting with HP Support on the phone for an hour, they finally agreed to send a box to my hotel. I was there for a week and it never arrived.

Fast forward to March 2009. My computer starts to occasionally turn off on its own; sometimes it would freeze with weird coloured lines on the screen. Then it just starts crashing almost constantly. I determine the video card is toast and disable the drivers. My computer stays alive for a few more days. And then, one day, I turn it on... and nothing. The screen is just a bunch of random white and black lines. The motherboard is fried.

So now my EV345AV (which isn't mentioned on any extended warranty notices) is a complete paperweight.

I bought an HP desktop about 10 years ago, I thought after a decade I would give HP another shot, maybe they had gotten their act together; they haven't.

I also bought mine about 17 or 18 months ago and the screen is scrambled. and here is another tidbit. my store just got a recall on models including my dv9339 that they are recalling the batteries due to overheating.I am furious as mine was a 1600.00 laptop. after reading all of these forums, it is like reading the same story over and over again! My computer too was just out of warranty. With this economy, we can't afford to all go out and buy another more reliable laptop.....really HP!!!

Good luck everyone and let me know if you want the list of models for battery recall

Same story as everyone who was unlucky enough to purchase this machine.

DV9000

About 15 months wireless went. Didn't think to much of it.

25 months in the motherboard is gone and HP refuses to fix it. No notification that there was a problem either mail or e-mail.

I can tell you they got their money back from the motherboard company but won't help the consumers that purchased the machine.

I have many HP products. It would be different if this were a fluke and my machines just happen to die, but when they are more than well aware of these being FAULTY and refuse to do anything.

Btw I have a dv9335nr with all the same issues as everyone else.

================================================================

In 2007 many HP Pavilion laptops with faulty Nvidia chips were sold to consumers for approximately $1,000-$2,000 each.

There is a 1 year warranty, but the problem does not surface until after about 1 year of use. More specifically many failed at exactly 14-15 months. In response to this, HP offered an "enhanced warranty" making the warranty effectively 2 years from purchase date instead of 1 year.

Here is a list of product numbers elegible for a free repair: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us

There are many others with identical problems that are not listed, such as the dv9335nr which is the one that I have. When HP support is contacted regarding a model that is not covered in this "enhanced warranty" they say that it will be approx. $400 to repair.

The next step was to obviously suggest to HP that an oversight was made, and more model #s be added to their list. They say they will forward it on to supervisors but nothing ever happens. People have done this as far back as August of 2008 just based on the few threads I have found. Several people commented that you just reach a "brick wall" in their support system.

I would ask that they fix all dv2000/dv3000/dv6000/dv9000 series laptops that had an Nvidia 7000 series "Go" chip free of charge and reimburse your firm for legal fees. Maybe even some extra for mental anguish? Many headaches were made over this I can assure you, but that is probably a stretch.. lol.

Here are several large forum threads discussing this issue. There are probably many more out there if you think it is worth pursuing further.

Another thing to consider is that these discussions represent "power users" and IT industry types. It is very likely that the actual number of affected consumers is more than 10-fold what you see here. The average laptop consumer will simply cough up the $400 to pay for the repairs or toss it in the trash and buy a new laptop.

There are more embedded links within the first 2 threads below, I got tired of picking them out and linking them separately.

Hey Vasu, I am having the exact same issue, I have the same notebook as you, and just a few months after I got it( bought it in July of 07'), the motherboard went out and I had to send it in to HP for repair. Now at that time it was no prob b/c it was still covered, but just before Thanksgiving of 08' i was playing WoW and my system just pixliated out and shut off. I first thought it was a in game issue, but after I rebooted my system I discovered that the entire system was going out. I had a screen where I could acess my desktop and all my files, but the graphics were in 4bit and about 400% its normal size, but and it was all green and grainy, like vertical Matrix type stripes for a while then it just went compleatly our. Every once and a while I will turn on the computer and I will just get a black or dim lit screen or it will show a vertical sepperation x6 on the load up. If i just let it go, I can hear windows starting up, but can not see anyting. When I called HP they said b/c it was out of date I owuld have to send it in along with 400 bones to get it fixed. This was after I had only had it back from the HP Repair for less than 6 months. Now, there is a known issue with some motherboards in the dv900 line of notebooks, but everytime I call they tell me that mine, ours, is not covered in this recall. Even thought its exibiting the exact same issues that they list on the recall, AND its a known issue with my personal notebook. I call or get on the online chat at lease once a month to hassle them about it, but they tell me that there is nothing they can do about it. I think its BS!! I loved my HP and i have always been a HP fan/supporter, but after this, and after spending $2,000 on this 10# paperweight, I am sick to my stomach and will NEVER give HP a red cent of mine again. I do plan on getting my notebook fixed, but I will take it to my buddy who has a computer repair store and he is going to hook it up with a aftermarket motherboard.

I am not sure that this will work. Most likely aftermarket m/b will be "refurbushed" or "rebuild". (One that I've got has Video chip re-attached using epoxy-like pink substance.
It will fail again. Next morning in my case. I still having problems getting my money back.)
This motherboard can't be repaired. It must be replaced with another type. I doubt that HP has a stock of motherboards that will fit dv9000 case, use the same CPU and memory. They will have to give you a new notebook.

FYI:SOLVED for now?
While Im not sure I would reccomend this to everyone I had little to loose and it worked for my DV9260us hp laptop.
Its an Intel based one that I purchased in late 2007 nd died about 13months later. It has never been covered by the extended warranty from Nvida nor HP.
The fact that this solved it convinces me that it really is the same exact problem as others and that HP is not owning up to it... very poor customer service and satisfaction!
At least apple extended their support by 3 years so I know my new macbook pro will be ok.

Since my laptop had no screen image at all (not on internal lcd panel nor external monitor), I figured Id try one last thing before throwing it away (nothing to loose but time)
I had been reading about people reflowing the nvidia chip in an oven. Having some time yesterday I tried using a heat gun and a digital kitchen thermometer, following the profile detailed here (http://www.altera.com/literature/an/an081.pdf) as per this thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4796633 see post by lordwalrus on 4/30/2009

It took me about an hour to disassemble, 5 mins to heat it & let then it cool - (see pdf for temps and timing), and about 2+ hours to test and reassemble it. I used foil to prevent too much heat on other parts and just did the nvidia chip. I decided not to move the board at all during so as not to bump the placement of the chip and only did the top side of the board (chip side).
I practiced with the heat gun and thermometer first to see what it takes to raise and lower the temps by the desired amounts (both via the thermostat on the heat gun and distance away).

Im pretty stoked that it worked and pretty simply really - other than the hassle of disassembly and reassembly.
No glitches so far - Ive run it on some heavy duty cpu and opengl tests for hours and while it gets warm no issues.
Im not sure how long it will last but some time is better than having it sit on the shelf. I now have another laptop to use, although it will still be my last hp product ever.

Good luck to anyone who tries this to resurrect their dead laptop - make sure to keep to the temp profile so as not to fry the chips.

Glad to hear it seems to have fixed it. Don't get too confident though, this sounds like a temporary fix with dimenishing returns. It probably does the exact same thing the "towel trick" does with the XBOX 360.

Is there a heatsink? I'm wondering if you could replace the thermal paste if so...

Yeah there are heat-pipes to the fan, I put new thermal paste on top of the chips. I suspect (hope) that its better than the xbox towel trick, as the heat gun should have actually melted the solder again - in theory ;-)

Same problem DV9000 ez345av, the graphic card went to crap. 400 dolars for repair. If you purchased it using AMEX card, it automacally extends any warranty by another year, you just have to call AMEX extended warranty.
I had purchased it thru Costco, which offers one year extra so it has in total 3 years warranty.
The problem is very well known as the guys from AMEX already knew about the issue for the pavillion.
I also bought a Lenovo a couple months later (in 2007). What a difference, no problems whatsoever, next time I already know what to purchase.

I have a dv9220us (RP246uar). After about 18 months I have the save problem. Computer only starts and shows black screen with hundreds of vertical colored lines. After weeks of online chat support (since my warranty is now over), they concluded it is my motherboard that is messed up. They stated it was a ridiculous $400 to fix it!

I have read about the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement offered to some dv6000 and dv9000 laptops out there which will allow for a free fix, however my exact product number is not included. Some people have said that they called and the explanation they received was that not enough people with the RP246UA laptops have complained about this issue and that is why it is not on the list.

I got an email from HP support stating that the rep double checked and my computer would have been included in the limited warranty service enhancement... however, it is valid only 12 months after the original warranty is up. Firstly, the actual wording online says "24 months from the beginning of the original warranty". Secondly, I bought my computer in August 2007, so it still hasn't been a full 2 years!

November 3,2008 was the date when i had sent my Notebook for service and i received it on March 13,2009. March 20th the issue repeated and the warehouse manager admitted that they had provided a temporary solution. I received the notebook with a replaced board. The DV9222TX board is changed to DV9220US. I have DV9260US
P/N: RP243UA

It is abundantly clear the problem I have with my notebook is shared by others here.

Watching a video the laptop crashed.
Did hardware reset (remove battery and hold pwr 20 secs), with no benefit.

Start up has no video to screen.
External monitor displays with green verticle lines. Windows starts in Safe Mode only.

As others with the identical model and part number have the identical problem, and nVidia has acknowledged a problem with the GE FORCE GO 7600, I too agree HP should be replacing these dead GPUs/mainboards at no charge.

I have asked for a case manager (supervisor?) to contact me to discuss the matter.

I've had mine for about a year and a half, and am now getting intermittent crashes, which I find troubling.

Before this, it was running fine. Of course, a couple of times when this has happened, I was playing a multi-player game, which seems to make it heat up quite a bit.

I don't know if there's a colleration, but you can't help but wonder if, by putting the cooling fan on the bottom of the laptop if that is a design flaw that is causing the problem.

I'm not happy with this latest development. I hope someone at HP is listening.

add another one to this sad and pathetic list......

got my dv9260 sometime in summer of 2007 or so, actually as a replacement of ANOTHER hp notebook purchased from comp usa (no longer around) that was damaged by HP while being serviced.

it is a RP243UA, and NOT listed under the limited warranty (as it's an intel processor).

have not contacted hp yet, as i have been researching possible fixes for the problem. after reading this thread, as well as a few others, it seems that there is nothing that I can do about it. but wanted to register here all the same. it's a bad that a supposed "top of the line-$2400 deskptop replacement" is nothing more than a glorfied paperweight right now.

Hopefully, HP will do the right thing after years and years of using them.

HP will not do anything if your DV9000 series laptop is out of warranty. They know there is a problem with these laptops, but it would cost HP hundreds of thousands of dollars to recall and fix all the sub-par products they sold in 2006 and 2007.

I received a 30% discount, however it is still quite a bit to be without my laptop for basically many weeks, and have to pay about $340. for a problem that is obviously with the nVidia GPU. As nVidia announced problems with the GO chips, why are we having to pay for repairs of them?

HP told me we pay because nVidia has not specifically mentioned the DV9000 series.

My HP Pavilion just died last week, about one month before warranty expired. Motherboard fried. It's a S6500 (if I recall correctly - it's in the shop). Nvidia graphics.

I'm wondering if all Pavilion motherboards are junk. I haven't heard back from HP or Best Buy (the authorized repair place).

I'm very glad I discovered this thread. I'll be pointing HP to it if they give me a hard time about fixing my computer while it's still under warranty.

But now I'm wondering if it will come back with a new defective motherboard...

I was shocked to learn of all the 9000 series had motherboard issues. First I had a hinge problem luckly it was still under warranty at that time. I had someone refer me to this forum to tell me that the laptop in which I own, which is a dv9005us Hp Pavilion that all the motherboards fail in them over and over again. I owned mine sine October 2007 purchased it from CompUs which they have since closed and about 5 months ago the motherboard is fried in it. And of course the warranty expired what you know. And Hp wants $398+tax to fix it I was planning to take it to a repair shop but was told it wasn't worth fixing because there were defects in the motherboards for this series. I talked to Hp a while back and they are now trying to sell me the Hp Pavilion G70 series. I paid a lot of money for this laptop.

Well I finally talked to Hp on July 27th,2009 and was told they could not do anything for my motherboard because they had the LSWEP and it expired December, 2008 in which I was never informed about there ever being a recall on the dv9000 series laptops. I am very upset that Hp expects me to fix there problem, I was told by the repair shop that the laptop was pretty much worthless on fixing because the motherboard will fail over and over again. I have since wrote the CEO and will be discussing the matter further to get something done about this unsolved issue I am having with Hp. I told Hp they need to check for themself of all the failed motherboards everyone here has experienced with there 9000 series laptop's of course they never want to hear that. One reason Hp will not repair your motherboard if it is not under warranty when they should have to or stop selling these lemons to customer is because they knew all along the motherboards for these series were defective when they sold them. Good luck to everyone here on the forum I hope you actually do something about your problem.

I would love to see HP resolve this to my satisfaction, but I see a lot of dissatisfied customers posting all over the Internet. It doesn't look good for us.

The tech support are basically, from what I can tell, trained to blame the customer for mishandling the computer or else claim it's a software problem. Anything to keep from admitting that HP has sold defective machines.

I have a Pavilion DV9407 and had a similar issue. I couldn't boot although all the lights on my unit were on.  I took it to a tech center and they told me the motherboard was fried.  However, rather than pay for a repair (my unit is not in the extended warranty program) I did the following to get it up and running again:

1) Removed the battery and placed the laptop in a garbage bag and then placed it in the freezer for 3 hours (make sure you take the battery out or it could explode if frozen when you plug your unit in)
2) Removed the unit and let it come up to room temperture for a half hour or so
3) Plugged it in and booted without the battery
4) on successful boot up, downloaded the updated bios from the HP site and rebooted
5) upon second reboot I downloaded and installed the latest Nvida driver for the GeForce 6150 graphics card and rebooted.
6) rebooted with my battery in and all has been perfect for over a month, hope this can work for you also.  Sure beats $200-$300 for a new motherboard.

I have a dv9207 and personally know three other people that have the same computer. ALL of them have broken hinges, fried motherboards and fried graphics cards. Through internet searches on the dv9000 series. I would NOT send it back in to HP for repairs because they only warranty their work for 90 days. All the information I can find shows that the poor people that paid the money to have their laptop repaired, end up with broken equipment a few months later (and nicely for HP) and are no longer under warranty. My laptop alone has been through 2 motherboards.

Called HP support, they don't care. they just want money to repair it.
Come on HP, own up to the fact theres a problem and fix the problem.

I bought a dv9292 in Feb 2007. At 1 year and a day the motherboard failed and Comet did not want to know as it was 1 day out of warrenty. I contacted HP who had it collected, repaired and return at no charge. However 18 months on it has failed again. I believe that in North America all of these machines have been recalled and an updated motherboard is being fitted, however, this does not apply to us second citizens of the UK. HP say it's not their problem, can't help.

Same issue here. Pavilion DV9207us. Left hinge broke after 13 months. HP would not repair. I repaired it myself for $200.00. A few months later they were offering free repairs. I called for a $200.00 dollar refund and was refused. Just over 2 years the wireless dissapeared. About a week later motherboard fried. Were screwed and HP could care less. It's somewhat funny as I called HP when my pc was new and complained about high heat as it was somewhat uncomfortable to use for typing. I was told these multimedia pc's always run hot and I should be using a cooler.

Two of my colleagues notebooks also went blank screen/dead.
DV9000 (DV9835eo) and a DV6000 series.
Has anyone fixed motherboard issue by upgrading BIOS? The DV9000 is still able to boot in Safe Mode.

I am so glad i have found this post. I have a dv6700 and mine died last night. Ive taken it to the store i bought it off and they said my motherboard is now fried and i need a new one due to the problems listed above. I have noticed that my computer is not listed in the extended warrenty and my warrenty ran out 2 months ago. I would like to know why they are only doing certain models when surely it should be all the models who have the nvidia graphics cards. I did have lots of problems with over heating and bought one of those fans you attach to the computer but it still over heated. Last night when browsing the internet the computer screen just went black, after trying to restart the computer all i get is a red/orange screen and after a few mins it turns itself off....hence the trip to the repair shop were i was informed it is my motherboard caused by my graphics card. They have gave me a price to have it fixed but to be honest i might as well buy a new laptop as will only cost a tiny bit extra. As i see a lot of people having this prob it would be nice to see hp step up and help their customers and see about extending their list.

Well wish me luck i am about to try customer service, i will write a update as to how i get on.

Add me to the list.. This is the 2nd motherboard I'm on with my DV9207US..My second one died literally minutes ago. I was able to plug in an external monitor and run Window in safe mode to get my information off but, otherwise, its trash.

Thanks HP!

I also had mine die after 1 1/2 yr. I was initially told no warranty. I just by chance called again a month ago and was accidentally told that HP had extended the warranty for another year and would now fix it. This was just done 2 weeks ago so I'm waiting to see how long it lasts now. This laptop has been a nightmare.

I have the HP Pavilion 9413cl and after over an hour trying to get my computer fixed that has this same issue as reported here to no avail. They claim the only way to do so is if I can find my receipt. I can't find my receipt.
I wish I could contact someone about this issue that can help me on this forum

Hey everyone:
I called the Case Managers to get a hold of my Case Manager. I got another woman, but she was nice. I explained to her that the laptop would get so hot it would burn the fingers, and I had to buy an extra mouse. I told her that I never smothered the fan, and that I did everything I could to keep it cool. Including limit my usage of it. She escalated my case to the Risk and Regulatory department of Hewlett-Packard. I have finished speaking with them, and now they want to evaluate my laptop to see "who is responsible for the costs." I'm more than sure they aren't going to let HP take responsibility, but we'll see. If and when they send it back without repairing it, I'll simply try again.

hp dv6710ea bought from play.com in march 2008. suddenly switched off while browsing & will not switch on again. After consultation with other repair shops, a network engineer & speaking to HP support, they all agreed that the motherboard had died. quoted £260 to replace. HP engineer agreed that the life was short but said in 99% of cases of this nature outwith warranty, they would not replace it. Following a conversation therafter with customer services, his opinion was confirmed. I have used this at home only, on a suitable laptop table with ample air circulation. Laptop now going to be sold for spares on ebay after costing me £500 , 20 months ago. I bought a Toshiba with a 3 year warranty today.

Hi , I have the same problem with nvidia and the motherboard. My laptop is a dv9275la and was purchased on the 25 of Feb of 2007. I don't know if it is wise to get it repaired if it's just gonna get fried a few months from now. It's not like I have $400 to spare. If I get it fixed I want it to last, but I guess that most likely will not be the case. I can't believe they can get away with this.

I just got off the phone with HP customer service and got the same results as so many of you. We are sorry Ma'am but your PC is out of warrantee and for the small introductory price of 49.95 we will telephone troubleshoot . for $99 we will let you send it in so we can tell you it is broke. And oh yes, you will still pay labor and parts to have another defective motherboard and nvidea chip installed.

I have a DV9260NR that will only show video through the external VGA and at that it is 4 bit 640. I cannot get the unit to complete a boot cycle, it only went to safe mode one time (and of course I did not get to download my data) and now after reloading a complete new Windows Vista 64 at the recommendation of a local tech support, it still will not boot. Luckily, I was able to pull one of the drives and get data recover done so I have my files.

Call (877) 917-4380 ext. 08 and talk to the case manager. After several attempts and telling them that no customer should pay for faulty hardware, they agreed to give me an extended warranty on my HP Pavilion DV9530T so call now and get it fixed for free!

Same here DV6451 US motherboard crashed . Apparently HP have knowledge that they are selling defective products but they dont cnty are about the consumer. The BS enhanced warranty is just a way to cover their behind. They have no intention of fixing our laptops so when you call you get the I am sorry but we gave you an extended warranty but it expired last moth. Emailed the CEO they assigned my case to a case manager but like the rest of you The case manager a John C informed me that they have no intention of fixing the laptop for free and it would cost me couple hundred dollars. I told him I am not willing to give HP one more cent of my money and this is the second HP laptop I have that the motherboard went.

OK guys all of you who dont have any waranty on laptop and dont want to pay 400+ UDS for "NEW" (read Repared) MBO you need to get 4 things :screwdriver,Flux spray ( for contact revitalising),Heat Gun , and thermal past, (all together will cost you 20-30 USD)
Slow step by step take out MBO and just use flux spray to put some flux under GPU ( grafic procesor)Make some cover from aluminium foly(put 3-4 layers) and make hole close to the size of that GPU to protect rest of the elements on bors and all plastic stuff on it then reheat GPU for 4-5 minn on 250-300 Celsius from distance of 10-15 centimeters using Heat Gun(dont come closer because you can blow off some small elements from MBO) and after that put alot of thermal past on GPU and CPU and put all together back.
Any1 with anycinde of tehnical expirience can do that in 1-2 hours and who dont have any expirience will need to be lil bit more careful and use lil bit more time but its easy and you can finde alot of videos on Youtube about this problem.
I will post some what i use for preparing for this job

DV9843 w/Intel Centrino + NVIDIA 8600

Tech people: I have a question. I am being told on one side that this is an easy fix with a shimmy and a cleaning and some arctic compound. On the other hand I am told that my GPU may be beyond an easy fix and I will need a new motherboard. How do I know if the fix will work? By trying it? I am afraid if I try it, and finally win my case with HP, they won't fix it because I tried to fix it on my own....

I have had my DV9700 for about 16 months and now it won't turn on. The lights flash, but nothing happens. HP will gladly sell me a new motherboard for $299.99, but the computer isn't even worth that plus labor to install it anymore. I have a EliteBook 6930p for work ,and I get the blue screen after the computer comes out of hybernation. That computer is also on its way out and it isn't even a year old. Ya know, I went with HP because my Dell computer's battery died after 9 months.

You can fix your GPU relatively easy you just need some aluminum and a heat blower,,, you even have movies on the internet. just type into Google motherboard fixing heat fan or sun sopt geforce that will bring you to the right track.

I am having the same issues as described in this thread. The laptop (Pavillion dv9420us) that I shelled out $1200 for 2.5 years ago is completely dead and useless.

I submitted a handful of inquiries to HP back when it was still covered under warranty, and was constantly given the runaround. Spent hours chatting with support personnel who had me performing various tasks such as removing the battery pack and re-seating the RAM... as if the issue had ANYTHING to do with RAM.

Because my problems were documented (but not properly addressed by HP) when the unit was still under warranty, I am hopeful that they will perform the necessary repairs for me free of charge. But it sounds like its going to take a good deal of time and effort for me to get them to do anything about it.

I'll keep you all posted on how things turn out.

For many years I have trusted and bought several stuff from HP... Then I had the same problem with my HP dv9000 laptop. As I'm seeing that HP is moving NOTHING to recall the clients of this evident manufacturing defect.

HP knows about the motherboard problem will not assist if off warrenty. Can't help you with fixing it because I'm fighting HP over the same issue right now.

I have a HP Pavilion dv9230us Notebook PC Entertainment PC with Intel Centrino Duo and NVIDIA Geforce Go 7600 grapics. My system is almost 3 years old and have the same issue people with the AMD/NVIDIA with overheating and not updating. I got with HP and they had me update my BIOS but within a week of the update the graphics card goes out. Now I am told by HP that I have to pay to have it repaired because the warrenty and service enhancement covers the AMD products and not the intel units. The more I read the more I believe that HP needs to re-evaluate the units that they will repair at no cost to the consumer. Has anyone had any luck at getting the point across to HP?

In my case, Issue has been fixed (by me, not HP support). I had the same problems that most of u guys had and before I continue to say how I fixed it, I want to describe the problem I detected or symptoms as best I can because what I did is kind of risky and may not apply to all of your issues. My laptop crashed in the middle of call of duty 5 and after not responding, I did an unexpected reboot(held power button for more than 10 seconds); after this my Laptop’s display just lighted up but with a black screen and after like 40seconds it restarted it self every time. Narrowed it down to my graphics card (GPU GeForce Go7600) that it was not functioning correctly so I hooked up a second monitor trough VGA output and was able to see anything lower the 4bit resolution (but with lines like corrupted image) so I was able to enter in safe mode, safe mode gives low resolution and every time I tried any other resolution higher than 4bits it crashed. Let me say I did mostly everything… reinstalled drivers, reformat disk and new MS® windows installation, flashed Bios on mother board, flashed GPU card (risky too), took apart, drained residual energy from capacitors on board, dropped it on the floor, checked cables for electrical continuity and so on… but same thing… no video on display but all other buttons lighted up like the ones for volume and I could hear hard drives and fans working. The theory out there on the web is that from all the heat this laptop generates, it caused some pins on the GPU to un-solder; since the GPU pins are unreachable to us mortals, I had to apply direct heat to the back of the mother board with at 200watt light bulb to melt soldering son pins could make contact. I took a chance in frying GPU but then again, (could be bad desing in GPU, laptop hardness ventilation, fan design, etc..) but I paid over 1600 dlls for this laptop and paid an extra 400dlls to have it fixed for same issue around 2 years after I bough it; sadly to say the issue occurred once again and I will not pay another 300dlls to have it fixed because its not worth it to pay this amount every year because this is a known issue that has not been properly addressed. Thanks for your time
