Author Subject: HP RX5935 with new Tom Tom maps?      Add to my favorites

Tom Tom have emailed me offering the new Western Europe maps vers 675, for GBP 40. I may want to upgrade but I will want my system to be the same, ie all files in the same place; IPAQ filestore rather than SD Card, I think Tom Tom Home wants to install to the SD card. I would prefer to do a manual install anyway. Has anyone done this upgrade and are there any problems. Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the 6.75 was new a year ago.
You should be able to install it anywhere you want to.

Thanks for the reply, I'll consider the upgrade. I realise the maps are not NEW, just NEWER, but they are offering them at half price, hence my interest. There does seem to be a significant amount of criticism of the maps but that is from people who are comparing them to v660 maps, I'm v650 I'll ponder.....

It all depends on what region you talk about. Generally the 675 map is more up to date (no surprise here) but they have compiled some of the minor roads off the release which has angered quite a few people.

For the UK 675 should be ok.

It is like Lutz says. I have 2 regional maps of Scandinavia. 6.75 and 7.xx. The 6.75 is quite okay.

To be honest I pretty well know where I'm going in the UK although the HP is a good backup. It's real value, for me, is in France and Spain, especially the cities. I've heard that v675 is OK for the UK and better than previous versions for Europe, to do with going from Navteq back to TeleAtlas. I think, since you're saying the upgrade will be fine, I'll go ahead and buy the maps. I'll have a Sprite backup of EVERYTHING, if I want to go back, but I'm assuming I'll be able to do a fairly simple swap of the maps folder using Active Sync Explorer. I was only anxious because my RX5935 is an extremely stable and well behaved system and I didn't want to mess it up.Thanks again.

I also have the Europe map and that was a big mistake I made to buy that. I have found out that the regional maps are much more detailed.

Preumably you can manually copy the maps into the Ipaq filestore?

I guess that due to space limitations you'll need to delete the ones that are currently installed?

Be interested to know how you get on as I am semi-tempted by the half price offer from TomTom.

I plan to pay for and download the maps this weekend. The Tom Tom site, cryptic as ever, implies that Tom Tom Home is required for the download, ..hmm.. as I don't want it cluttering up a decent computer, I'll install it on my old laptop. I'll do a manual install of the maps and report back what happens early next week.

I downloaded the new maps, and having fully backed up using Sprite, rather than TOM TOM Home, which can't be trusted I decided to install the new maps onto a new SD card rather than replace the old maps in the IPAQ filestore, the reason: the new maps are 500MB SMALLER than the old ones !!

I used TTHome to install the maps which seemed to work fine. The download from the TomTom site via TTHome was tortuous, it would seem Home is very sensitive to data integrity. I had to plug directly into my router via ethernet to get the download, over wireless it kept stalling.

I am confused by the above post. You first say you didn't use TTHome and then you say you did???
I would be interested to know if you can install new maps by just copying them to the IPAQ File store.

What I meant, and actually said but maybe confusingly, was that I didn't use TTHome to backup the Ipaq to my laptop. It didn't want to do it.

You can only download the maps using TTHome.

I expanded the map cab files and got the usual files we know but decided to install them using TTHome as I remember once doing a manual install and although the files were copied the maps couldn't be accessed from within Navigator.

The install using TTHome went fine anyway, the filestore is offered as an option so I could have deleted the orig map files to make space and installed to the filestore. Because I was unsure of what the new maps were like I decided to keep the old ones and install new maps to the SD card. Both sets of maps are available from within Navigator using Change Maps.

One question: Within Navigator, both the old and new maps have the same name. Does anyone know if I can edit a file to rename one of them slightly, and still have it work obviously.

If you you bought a new version of the same map then why do you want to keep the old one in your ipaq? They should be in Home so you can install it anytime you want.

I thought, for now, that I'd keep both maps on the Ipaq and compare them now and then, when I have the time. I'm sure the new maps are an improvement but I'd like to check this out. If the new maps are better, I'll move them to the filestore and retire the old maps.
