Author Subject: XP or Vista32 on TouchSmart IQ504      Add to my favorites
Willi Wirz
Sep 5, 2008 09:05:59 GMT

I just bought a TouchSmart IQ504 to run my Jukebox program (touchtrax.com)
It runs on XP and Vista32 but not on Vista64

Anybody knows if I can 'downgrade' to Vista32 or XP?
I do not care about the TouchSmart software but naturally want the touchscreen and digital audio output to work.

Thx in advance for any help or suggestions

Willi

You can load any OS on that PC.

Its finding all the drivers.

I suggest a dual boot with Vista 64 and XP.

hi Willi,

you should be aware that by downgrading your OS to 32bit (XP or Vista) you will not be able to access the full 4GB of ram you have installed, the graphics card ram overlaps the 3.2Gb to 4Gb range - so at most you will only have 3.2Gb of addressable ram, which isn't to bad unless you have an application which performs better with 4gb or more.

should try and get touchtrax to get their act together lol..

btw what sort of sound you getting out of yours? Do u use the coax digital to some sort of 5.1 surround? I'm only getting best 48Khz which is poor on my iq508a - if you do downgrade to 32bit could you check for me what max sound res you get (Control Panel->Sound->SPDIF Interface->Properties->Supported Formats)

TouchTrax will update their software - sooner or later :)
The software works on what the bulk of people use; XP Home/Pro 32 or Vista 32
I have a hard time understanding the working's of the brain from the person who made the decision to release a computer with support for Vista 64 only when a) there are not many people who use and or want it, and b) there are not that many apps for it (yet) - at least the choice to use XP or Vista 32 should be available.

Until TouchTrax works on Vista64 or HP wakes up, I want to get something working.

That said, I downgraded to XP and for some people who want to follow, there are a few more hurdles

First it would not accept any CD do boot - got a BSoD and error Stop:0x0000007B
Got around that with changing Setup (Bios) ->Advanced -> Sata1 Controller Mode to IDE
Then I was able to install XP Tablet Edition
I downloaded on another computer the Lan driver (thx Rich) and now had wired internet access (so I was now able to get the other drivers direct)
Next I got (and installed) the Chipset and Graphics drivers - see Rich post above
Last I upgrade to SP3 (and all other upgrades)

Audio
I downloaded 'SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio - 6.10.1.5680' from versiontracker.com
It would not let me install but I extracted the installer to a folder with WinRar and then pointed to it and got 'something' installed - I have sound and digital output, but no SoundMax mixer or volume control in the Taskbar. I am sure there is a better driver and if someone finds it, please post directions here.
For me it's good enough for now since I control the volume in the sound control panel and then with my amp.

Currently I have 4 more yellow questionmarks in the Device Manager
eHome Infrared Transceiver (I believe that is for the MC remote control?)
HP Integrated Module (I don't know what it is or does - somebody knows?)
Network Controller (Wireless - will look for a driver and if I can't find one I plug in an USB dongle for wireless since I need it)
Unknown Device (No idea what that is - somebody else knows?)

I am happy since I got working what I needed for TouchTrax to work (touchscreen and audio)

Jim, I use coax digital to a Sony 945 amp and I get sound but since the driver install is 'incomplete' I can't tell you what res it is

I don't believe anyone here has gotten the wireless working in XP.

A recent poster claims that he got all of his drivers for another model using this app:

thx for the Bluetooth link :)

found some AirLink101 b/g wireless small USB dongle in a drawer and plugged it in. Works like a charm with built in XP drivers. If I remember right, I paid on eBay more for shipping than for the dongle - sure saves a lot of time looking for drivers :)

Wow Willi,

That's some good and outright courageous steps you've taken to get to XP for your touchtrax - 10/10 points for that on your IQ500!

Does your Sony receiver have a diagnostic console which tells you the current active sound resolution being played through it? I have a Sony STR-DG510 which does tell me when sound is generated, tells me "PCM 48Khz" blah yuk junk!!

I had a look at the touchtrax forum and product the other day - personally i like touchsmart much better, based on the screenshots - however i have another issue where it does say on page 40 of the documentation that comes with the IQ508a touchsmart software, that the Music library uses the Windows Media Player Library (WMP), but this is not true and I believe it is a bug, because my mp3's are all loaded on a network file share (HP Media Vault MV2020), my WMP library is populated using these files on the file share and my Touchsmart Music don't use it or even able to see the mp3 files without having to laboriously create playlists - another thumbs down for me on the IQ500 Series touchsmart S/W...

I suppose i should submit another threead for that - which i will do later...

Jim

I am using a Jukebox program for years. It's called PC Jukebox thepcjukebox.com and it was the closest thing I could find to digital jukeboxes in bars. Have a look at the screenshots and you understand.
I have many saved playlists, etc.
TouchTrax is the next step from the same programmer. Unlike TouchSmart which crappes out after a certain amount of songs (500) in a playlist, PCJukebox and TouchTrax will not - you can have as many as you want. I have a few Buffalo TeraStation NAS servers for movies and one for MP3. One day I made a mistake when building a playlist. Instead of selecting the folder I wanted, I selected the entire volume - when I checked about 30 minutes later it was still cataloging...
I upgraded to TouchTrax only because it has support for widescreen, which PC Jukebox has not.

What I did not like was the way how to build a playlist in TouchSmart - dragging each song to it - takes me to long. It should be able to catalog a folder filled with mp3 and make a playlist. Also, where is the play 'Random' button?

BTW - I believe you have to import a WMP catalog to TouchSmart. It can use also import iTunes catalogs

I check on the Sony later

I see - I haven't had too much to do with touchsmart music yet only because i couldn't be bothered with playlists - however i believe it should simply use the WMP library - that’s how I translate it in the documentation - refer to page 40

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01490806.pdf (38MB)

"Selecting a music library
You can use Windows Media Player or iTunes (downloaded separately) to add your songs to your music
library. HP TouchSmart can play music from only one music library at a time. The default setting is
Windows Media Player. If you want to use your iTunes library, open the TouchSmart Music window, tap
Settings, select Use HP TouchSmart Media library or Use my iTunes library, and then
select Save.
For more information about adding music files to your music libraries, see the Help menus in the iTunes and
Windows Media Player programs."

so i'll be logging a call to HP soon about this as i feel that the documentation is either misleading or the app is not functioning as designed.

however, my main concern at this moment is the specs for your sound card as well as mine should be studio quality 24bit/192khz max (AD1984B) - if you find you're only getting 48Khz max from the sound card (which is really very poor for a media pc) then you might want to also log a call with hp support so that they get a move on to resolving it for us (i have already logged a call for this). I mean, you go to all the trouble for your dukebox software and the sound you should be getting from your IQ500 should be far better than what it is now (that is if your only getting 24bit/48Khz)..

here are the specs of the sound card fyi:

I got the iq504, i was able to install windows xp pro sp2.

However, wont recognize any of those drivers Rich posted. I got 8 devices.

Am i missing something? Or should i upgrade to service pack 3 first? or Should i use a different version on Windows XP?

Hey guys:

First of all, thanks for all the replies here it has been a huge help for installing xp on a touchsmart.

Secondly, the only problem after following these posts is that using an external USB wireless card presented reliability issues and sometimes would not work, sometimes work, and sometimes think its working however it didn't really work.

What I did to overcome this issue is buy this PN mini PCI express wireless card: 441086-001 (AGN 4965 intel)
http://www.blueraven.com/us/Service-Parts/Item/ItemDetails.aspx?POEPartNo=54714
(34$)

And downloaded the drivers from:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-63029-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3686715&os=228&lang=en

...And hooked the black antenna wire to port number 1 and the grey to antenna 2...

And then voula! You now have wireless!

The only thing I am unsure of is if the wireless N capability works 100 % or at all since antenna number 3 is missing on the touchsmart.

This problem did not seem to affect the performance and provided a MUCH more stable networking device and also did not have a bulky antenna sticking out of it :)

Cheers,

Mike

802.11 N is still a draft.

I would not recommend it to anyone unless they buy the same brand to be sure it will match.

like a router and a wiereless card both from the same manufacturer.

Using different manufacturers have already proven it may not work.

Think about it.

how can they sell a N device when it is not even out yet?

Hi Rich,

I hope all is well with you.

Got a quick question tho, I was able to do partition and dual boot it with Vista/Windows XP Pro. Lan works well but I cant seem to install

Chipset GM965

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-025753.htm

Do I have to use XP tablet edition?

Thanks,
Francis

Rich:

I don't know if you were responding to me however I don't understand why there would be ANY issues what so ever. Pci-e is pci-e, no matter what card you throw in there. I could have even put in a mini pci-e to expresscard if I wanted to and it should run properly.

Anyway, update:

I found the WIRELESS drivers for the IQ504, and probably the rest of the touchsmart series because it seems they use the same wireless card in every system. Link is below:

http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/MSI-Wind-U100-RT2700E-Wlan-Driver-1200-Download-73416.html

So, now you don't need to replace anything and the internal wireless will work :)
