Hi there :)
I'm hoping you can help me with the following problem:
I recently (1 week ago) bought a new HP Compaq 6715s notebook (Turion TL-58 1,9 GHz, 2 GB RAM, X1250, 160 GB HDD, Vista Business).
The Problem is that it sometimes locks up just showing a dark screen (screen isn't deactivated, it's just illuminated black) - interaction isn't possible anymore. Even Wlan can't be disabled via the button in this state.
The notebook is neither hibernating nor in standby. It just hangs up.
I've read here in this forum that I'm not the only one who experiences this 'behavior' but I wasn't able to find a solution.
What I've tried so far is a complete reinstall of Windows Vista and installing Catalyst 8.2 IGP driver package instead of the HP's driver (which I assumed to be problematical). It's completely updated, too.
BIOS is also up to date (that's what the BIOS update utility says).
Still the same trouble :(
After all I'm at a loss with it and I would be glad to have an explanation.
...even thought it's just the advice to contact HP support - it's welcome ;)
Thanks a lot!

Johannes,
You are doing the right thing for trying to rule out any software conflicts by re-installing Vista and the Video driver.
My gut feel is there is a hardware problem somewhere. Eg. CPU/GPU heat sink not seated properly causing overheating and hence system lockup.
Can you run CoreTemp (Google CoreTemp)and see how hot the CPU is running. There may also be an utility to monitor your ATI card.
Other than that, I think it is time to call HP support. |

Hi Lim,
Thank you very much for your advice :)
After having testet the whole Hardware (Temps -> CoreTemp & Everest, RAM -> intgrated BIOS test & bootable memtest86+, Harddisk -> surface scan) I can state out that it doesen't seem to be a singular hardware problem.
As I read another bunch of postings in the meantime, I came to the conclusion that it must be a general failure in hardware design or incompatibility. Many people owning 6715 series notebooks report exactly this problem.
So far I experimented some things; The problem hasn't occured since I prevented the notebook to go hibernating or in standby. In addition to that I disabled the adaptive deactivation of the screen in energy managment.
I am still testing and this solution isn't for sure...
I'm going to call HP on monday and will report to keep you informed.
Kind regards,
Johannes |

Johannes,
Just a note about calling HP support. When you ring HP, HP is known to ask you to restore your system partition to the factory default (from the recovery partition).
They will most likely don't like the idea of you re-installing Vista on your machine.
You know there is a hardware problem but they will probably force you through a flow chart problem solving processes.
Many users have reported this frustration with with HP support on the AMD/Broadcom Wifi motherboard failure issue.
Not good customer service and I hope HP Europe is better. |

Back again :)
I called HP today three times (my phone bill might forgive me), talking to 5 people of the HP support center and finally I'm non the wiser than before.
All I got were standard solutions (plugging an external monitor, checking temps, etc.) and I got the impression that nobody of them just realized me saying that because of the accumulation of that problem it must be a general failure in the notebook's hardware design. After all they promised me to call me tomorrow... let's see what happens... ;)
So far I believe to have found a temporal solution:
The problem is I think caused somewhere in energy managment as it has NOT occurred, when I switched the Vista energy managment to full performance.
When I switched back to balanced energy managment and the notebook went into standby, little time after reactivating the dark screen was there again.
I'm going to check this out further on - maybe the failure's origin can be located in one single energy managment option (as I wrote before, disabling adaptive deactivation of the monitor seems to be a good approach).
Please keep your fingers crossed that I'm on the right path ;)
Kind regards... |

Hope you manage to find a solution.
On my HP machine with an AMD TL-56 1.8Ghz and GeGorce Go 6100. At idle (both CoreTemp and HWmonitor) the temps are:
- CPU between 35 - 38C - GPU between - 55 - 58C |

Exactly the same problem here. I updated the BIOS, which made the problem happen less frequently, but not dissapear all toghether.
I find that it just happens randomly, not necessarily when doing something CPU intensive, which isn't what I'd expect if it was a cooling issue.
Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
sorry for being absent such a long time.
Unfortunately my hopings to find a solution in the energy settings didn't succeed. I am in contact with HP Support right now, they asked me to do some tests.
I am going to send a couple of forum links to them, showing that my problem is not just a singular one but a general technical failure - on the basis of these facts it's maybe a bit easier to argue ;)
So far I'll try to keep you informed even though I do not have much time.
Cheer up! ;) |

Hi there!
I'm also one of those (un)happy owners of HP 6715s!
My screen also goes randomly black, and no activity inside laptop is heard.
Also, i have updated all the drivers including BIOS, but with no luck!
I was thinking that this could happen because of a chance of overvoltage in electrical system, but my thinking was wrong when screen went black while running on batteries ;(
Besides that i still have one question: why is Windows always resetting power schemes? As example, if i set never to go standby (while plugged and on batteries), when i unplug it, then plug it again and leave it for 30 minutes, it always goes to standby and resets power scheme to windows default.
Is this maybe a hardware power management error?
Thanx for any answers and cheers from Slovenia. |

For now I have found a way to reproduce the problem for sure: Close your notebook then re-open and re-activate it. After that wait for screensaver and so on... suddendly the black screen apperars. |

Hello from Croatia. I have same problem. I tried everything you mentioned it here. I am very frustrated with my HP notebook. It all began in January when I bought it. Nothing i tried didn't help to solve problem. I've done recovery twice, changed power options countless times. First i've send it to the local service, they didn't know what is problem. Just a week ago I have sent it to main service, they did third recovery on it. It arrived this morning and problem is still there. Service told me there can be problem in Ati Catalyst softvare, with PowerPlay option. Tomorrow i will call main service again. I will try to find some explanation...and report to you all. |

Doesn't sound good at all. It looks like the 6715s is going to go down in history as the failed DV2000/DV6000/DV9000/V3000 series.
Sigh. This is how far HP quality has slipped. I can still remember the good old days of HP ... |

Hey!
I've updated BIOS to the newest, enabled LAN/WLAN switching in BIOS, and installed just ATI drivers, without Catalyst control center and other crapware. I haven't had a black screen for the last 3 weeks from then.
But i think, this really should be a Windows issue, because under Debian linux, i haven't had any black screens recently.
Cheers! |

Hi
I'm having the same problem here with my 6715s which is only a few weeks old. It does this when the notbook is closed on battery power & it goes into standby mode, after which it is reactivated & then the black screen appears after a few minutes like Johannes said. I did download the new driver for the Ati card like Franky Dai suggested (thanks by the way)which updated the driver from version 8.3 to 8.4. This did make a slight difference on my first attempt to replicate the problem. This time when it did go into black screen I could still hear the music playing as though the notebook was running as normal. I then clicked on the power button for shutdown & it did power down with the usual power down sound. Before the driver update I did not get any sound/response, which makes me wonder if the problem is just with the ATI display driver/graphic card. I'm going to attempt to replicate this again when I get some time to see if I get the same result.
Johannes, have you had any luck with HP on this? |

Hi,
Check this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923232 (A Windows XP-based computer that is using an Intel dual-core processor may stop responding when you try to resume the computer from standby)... This is consistent with Johannes Miederer's remark "The problem hasn't occured since I prevented the notebook to go hibernating or in standby". Altough the article refers to XP, could be also a Vista problem...

Hi Aurel Ion

Could it possibly be the same issue with AMD too? |

Ummer,
In fact, i think this is a more general problem related to pw mgmt in XP for dual core procs...
"Computers that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features, such as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor performance states, require Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additional updates are available to optimize performance and behavior on computers that are running Windows XP SP2. Without these updates, computers that are equipped with these power management-capable, mobile, dual-core processors may experience decreased performance or unexpected behavior." (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256 )
In these conditions, maybe you should try to use a different application for cpu pwr mgmt (eg rmclock)...

Hello!
I ran my 6715s (vista) many weeks without any black screen, but this week i had one. The time before i ran my 6715s in low power consumption mode (minimum clocking at 800 Mhz), but then a few days ago i switch to dynamic clocking (used the AMD Cool 'n' Quiet Feature), since then i had this black screen again.
I think the onboard-grafics x1250 have a problem with the dynamic clocking of the cpu and the ram-access through the cpu-memory-controller. Sometimes it comes to this black screen bug.
Maybe HP can fix this in bios.
Have had anybody contact with HP about this problem?

I've got my motherboard replaced and that instantly recovered the problem of the black screen for me. The operation was carried out approximately 2 months ago and I havn't had a black screen since, whereas I had black screens almost every day prior to the motherboard replacement. If you send in your notebook for a motherboard replacement, make sure upon reception of the notebook that the motherboard indeed has been replaced. In my case, HP only flashed the bios at first. This however didn't fix the problem. A HP technician then had to visit my house and replaced the motherboard on site. |

Hello again.
My HP 6715s was at HP Support and got a new mainboard, but the black screen syndrom is still there if i use the AMD Cool N Quiet function, which reduces the clock, when cpu idles. If i set the manuell to a low or high clock, then everything is fine and the laptop works good.
It seems to be a hardware bug of the laptop or a Bios-probem. Maybe HP can fix it, if enough people report this problem.

Dante |

Hi,
I'm not sure whether this will help, but I encountered similar problem with my 6715b. (Maybe this is comment for another thread) "Black screen" problem appears on 6715b when the system was waked up from suspend state and then screen is switched off then it looks like system is hanged up. With 6715b the problem is that back light is not switched on when I move the mouse or type something. Solution is to shortly press and release the lid. Of course this is very annoying but this is the only solution which currently works for me (except switching off/on).
My opinion that this can be solved by some driver modification (HP should know what). Either it is HW or SW bug obviously there is a procedure that triggers some mechanism that switches back light on.
I have my 6715b about 6 months and I installed video driver from different sources HP, AMD/ATI, and even some tweaked drivers but neither of it were not solve "black screen" problem.
I didn't have a problem with WLAN you describe here but i hope that this comment will help you.

My 6515s also suffers from the "blank screen problem". By now it was 'repaired' two times from HP (mainboard replaced) - and the problem is still there !!
Upgrading the ATI drivers to the latest version did not help neiter. Roughly one time per day, the system hangs with the blank screen and I have to press the power button some seconds.
Are there others who had their 6515 'repaired' by HP without success ?
Thanks for your feedback ! |

It is apparent to me that this only happens on battery power, so it must have something to do with power management.
However, I've tested the solution Velimir has put forward (read his post above) & it apparently works. Thanks Velimir. You do not actually need to close the lid for this to work as the lid closure pin (just under the screen to the left) can be pressed to simulate the closure of the lid making things a whole lot easier.
I don't use the notebook on battery power a lot so have not tested the pin pressing workaround. Please confirm if this works for you.
Thanks,
Ummer |

So I found somewhere advice to stop and turn off ATI Plug n Play Service in Administrative Tools - Service and problems gone forever.

Both of the Vista machines alsow have destroyed the AC adapter after a few months. I feel that the problem is increasing in intensitie before the AC adapter is completly defekt. Maybe the problem is about the settings in Vista for energi saving??? Sorry my spelling. From Norway.

I also have a HP 6715s (KE061ET) for some days now. There were some black screens, too already: While working (i.g. copying files to the hard disk from an external drive) it suddenly freezes. The screen is still illuminated but turns completely black. Power / WLAN lights are still on. Hitting power button doesn't help. Only pressing the power button for some seconds makes the 6715 turn off so it can be restarted again. I'm using the pre installed Windows Vista Business. Power settings are those from the pre configured 'HP balanced' setting. I haven't found a solution yet.
Maybe HP recognizes that there's an issue with this model and ships some appropriate advice and update (BIOS? Drivers?) for it. |

Hello people!!!
For resolve problem, download latest driver from HP site, ati catalyst 8.45.
Or with old drivers, go in catalyst control center/powerplay, disable powerplay or put all optimizations on full performance.
Latest ability is that change MB.

I updated the ATI drivers and put all energy settings to 'high performance', turned off Powerplay in the ATI CCC: The problem still comes up. I could reproduce it by sending the notebook to 'energy save mode' once. Then, after re-waking it, after some minutes the screen turns black. If it is booted normally (not resumed from energy save), the problem won't occur (what ever energy settings are made!)... |

Hey,
I've bought my HP Compaq 6715s in February, this year and there were many, many black screens. I've phoned with HP 4 weeks ago, On Monday, UPS picked my notebook up and send it to POLAND (wtf).. It took a week, then i've got it back. I started up my notebook: SAME PROBLEM!!!
Then they send an engineer to me... New screen, new motherboard. I tried it, one day after it. NO RESULTS --> SAME PROBLEM
One day after that result, the second engineer was repearing my notebook @home, new motherboard but again NO RESULTS...
I went to the store where i bought this notebook and they gave me a new HP Compaq 6715s free with me but i've installed some things, i was looking a movie and then... AGAIN A BLACK SCREEN!!!
OOOOOOHHHHH Monday i get back to the store and i want my money back!!
I've phoned HP several times, for hours and now i've send an email to HP, that I want an idemnity!!
Good luck everyone... |

Hi all, I had a phone call with HP support. He said that probable the disk image for the Windows install was somehow corrupt. They sent me Windows Vista Recovery Disks and advised me the run the disk sanitizer first to completely eliminate all stuff on the disk. Bad thing that I've already set up lots of applications and data on the notebook. But: I will try that procedure and keep you updated. @all: Those who experience the problem: Is it with the circumstances only: - re-wake after suspend - WLAN active ??
Has anybody 'solved' successfully the problem by using XP instead? |

Same problem here. HP Support advised that I need ATI driver 8.5 or newer to fix it and then proceeded to send me the link for v.8.45.
From this thread it sounds like a very common problem that needs fixing.
I sell my customers HP PC's based on my experience of support with them.....maybe it's time to start looking elsewhere. |

I also have a new HP 6715s with AMD T-60 since a week now. I get the first black screen after setup of Vista Business 32 bit from the HP Factory image. While working it suddenly freezes. This happend randomly some Times since then. The screen is still illuminated but turns completely black. As there are so many posts with the sasme issue, it seems for me to bee a Hardware design fault. So I will try to give the Notebook back to the Reseller. |

I am experiencing the black screen also. It happens always and only after waking the computer up from sleep. I don't really need sleep so disabling it is the easiest fix for me. It's still annoying that there is a problem like this and no way to really fix it. |

I have the same problem with my Compaq Presario v3417AU where i can't boot or start up properly. I need to awake my laptop for several times so that it can start up properly.
Just wanna give some suggestion here.
U guys can try to go command prompt, and type:
sc config intelppm start= disabled
(with space) and then hit enter. To disabled the intelppm image to start running from the machine which will crash with amd processor.
or,enter safemode, go to run, type regedit, hit enter.
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-> ControlSet001-> Services->intelppm-> Start. And change the hexadecimal value to 4.
These solution doesn't work with my V3417Au but hope u guys can solve your "black screen" problem.
Happy tryin... |

I've had the exact same problem on my HP 6715S (so does a friend of mine with the same notebook). The screen goes blank after a while when resumed from sleepmode in vista. I updated the bios from F.0B to the new F.0D this weekend, and I have used the laptop for more than 5 hours after sleep mode right now! (multiple sleeps in between) I am almost sure that this bios version fixes the problem. But it's not mentioned in the changelog. |

I updated BIOS of my 6715b from F.0B to F.0D hoping it would fix the problem. First sleep-wake cycle was promising and no black screen appeared. Second cycle tho, brought the problem back. In first try the laptop was plugged in to AC and on second try it was on battery power. Don't know if it matters and did not bother to make more tests. I checked release notes for the BIOS update and there is only one enhancement: "Improves the security of pre-boot authentication (BIOS-based) passwords by clearing data from volatile memory." So no fix for the black screen problem yet. Way to go HP! |

Hmm okay... I worked on the laptop for another 2 hours yesterday, but I still did not get a blank screen (read: a total system freeze with a blank screen).
I did not mention the following in my previous post, because I think it doesn't have any influence...But I also upgraded the memory from 2x1GB to 1x1GB+1x2GB at the same day of bios update. If this would have influence and other people having the problem can confirm that they don't have this memory setup, it would point out that it has something to do with the way the motherboard communicates with the memory controler of the CPU.
But I don't think that this is the case. Reading your unchanged experiences with bios F.0D, the problem will probably arise at my 6715s again soon. I'll keep you informed! |

It took some time, but I got a blank screen/freeze yesterday :( So I can confirm that memory config doesn't have any influence and bios F.0D doesn't fix anything.
Do there actually exist 6715s/6720s notebooks (HP 30C2 board) without this problem ? Or did anyone get a model back from RMA that was really repaired ? |

Just to keep you informed: I've got the same problem with an 6820s notebook running Windows XP SP2. Newest drivers and a clean installation.
It only happens when running on battery (half-full, certainly not almost empty!)
This is also a problem with the 6820s model! Problem seems to be connected to the ATI driver (powerplay and/or VPU recovery). |

I've got absolutely the same problem than everyone of you. The screen gets randomly dark and there's no possibility to bring it back. I also think that this happens more often after a resumed standby, but I'm not quite shure. I'll monitor it for a while to give you some details soon.

PS: It would be very nice to hear something like a response from HP about this problem... |

Hi,
I've had the same problem on many of the 6715b notebooks that I support, as have lots of people judging by the number of different threads, random black screen with power off/on the only way to restore. I've applied sp34462.exe, downloaded from the HP site, and haven't seen the fault occur on any of the laptops since. Our 6715b's all run Win XP Professional SP3 so I'm not sure whether this update would be applicable to Vista. It may be worth checking this update to see if it is compatbible with the 6715s. |

Hi Anthony, interesting! I am running Windows vista, so I can also run the system default settings application for vista (sp39592 that is). But I have 1 question: did you check that cool and quiet is still active after running this patch ? It might be that this patch forces the cpu to run 100% all the time, which indeed fixes the blank screen problem. But that's something I don't like. I hope that CnQ is still active on those 25 notebooks !
Thank you in advance :) |

So it has been a little time since my last post ;)
All I can tell you is to prevent the notebook from going to sleep / hibernate / standby.
The problem is not caused by C'n'Q or ATI PowerPlay as these techniques do quiet well.
You can use these functions as you want, feel free :)
I am running my notebook for 102 hours now, which is a bit more than 4 days (continuous) without any black screen. During this time, the notebook was told NOT to go hibernating or in standby.
If you allow standby or hibernating and then you wake it up again you will get the black screen.
So either you let it run without hibernate/standby or you have to shut it down completely when you don't need it.
And btw: HP support is bad(just for all the ones who think it might be reasonable to send it to service: forget about it, I did and the problem has not been resolved).

Hi again, Today I called to HP Business support in the Netherlands to report about this problem. I explained everything: - The problem: black screen with system freeze. - When? On battery power, with cpu-throttling (Cool and Quiet) enabled after resuming from sleepmode. - What does NOT fix it: currently available bios versions, turning off LAN power saving (in bios), updating video drivers, resetting power scheme by HP patch. - And the fact that this is a serious problem involving, I think, every notebook with this motherboard (ATI 690 chipset). I have pointed to the topics (including this one) on this forum.
After a while, they could not give me a solution. In that case, they "escalate" the problem. This means that the problem will be sent the 'second level' in India. I hope that they will understand that this is a serious problem. I would say... start researching this problem HP, and hopefully it can be fixed by software (bios or driver/patch).
Hopefully they will come up with a solution other than "disable Cool and Quiet". I didn't buy this laptop to have a reduced standby time on battery power. And I also like to keep using the sleepmode of Vista ;)
I'll keep you informed! |

I've had this problem on and off for the best part of this year (on a 6715b with Vista Business 64-bit installed), losing a lot of time and work in the process.
Following the advice on this thread, I have recently installed the "System Default Settings for Microsoft Windows Vista" (SP39592) and ATI graphics drivers (SP38784) from the HP web site and not had a recurrence of this problem. I hope that this helps. |

Hi folks..
I have the same problem since I bought this months ago. Especially under Win XP the blackscreen appears several times a day. Then I again switched to Vista Business 32bit. There I don't have often a black screen but sometime. The Energy Scheme (balanced(aka HP Optimized)/Power Saver) is not working automaticly. Even if the Energy Scheme is activated, I can see in the Resource Manager that the system uses 100% CPU frequency all the time. If I than restore the the options, the dynamic cpu throttling works. But after a restart - same problem.
Next thing are BSOD. Mostly when I want to shutdown, restart or hibernate, the system gives me after a while the bluescreen. Vista then suggests me to update the broadcom driver to solve the problem. Nothing works. Hope you can find a solution.

OS doesn't matter (XP, Vista, DOS, FC5/7/10, knoppix, ubuntu...).
I found - disable "Vista Direct App Launch" in BIOS.
From several hanging per day, to none from about two weeks. |

Today I put in a brand new 2.5'' HD and reinstalled all Windows Vista from the DVD. Then I only installed the necessary drivers for video, sound, WLAN, modem,... I skipped the other stuff like HP this and that, Smart Card or One touch buttons. (This model doesn't have a smartcard reader or HP buttons ;-)) I had the 6715s turned on and sent to sleep several times over one day. No problems. After that I reinserted the original HD with the original preinstalled Vista: After having one 'sleep mode' and resume, some minutes later, it hung with the black screen again. So, all the guys having tried XP and various other attempts: Did you wipe out the disk completely before? |

Here's a reply from left field (Acer computer with Vista, ATI embedded graphics and an AMD CPU, just like your HPs).
I would say clearly there's some yet to be discovered driver issue in Vista, related to PowerPlay and/or to Power Themes.
In my case, I'm guardedly celebrating, because my screen saver issues (not coming out of it) so far are fixed just by turning off Power Play. I'd suggest to everyone, download the latest Catalyst/ATI driver, and unfortunately, you have to also run Catalyst, because I didn't see a way to turn off PowerPlay when you don't use Catalyst.
I see from the comments that PowerPlay disabling didn't work for everyone. For the rest of you, also set your Power Plan to "performance", AND your PowerPlay off. I'm very curious how it works for you.
And by the way.. (let me be polite)... Just because HP support is very imperfect, just imagine what it's like with an Acer. They can't even make a decent support website. |

Hello HP, hello Microsoft, I reinstalled Vista on my 6715s. I installed the HP drivers needed. Everything was fine! I could resume from standby without any black screen problem at all. This went fine for hours and many 'restarts from standby'. I installed all my applications. Still everything fine. Then I installed Vista Service Pack 1! After this: Standby - Resume - wait some minutes - black screen!!
OK. Vista has a problem? So: Wipe the disk completely. Install XP pro. Install drivers. Install apps. Test. Resume from standby works fine, no problems. After several attempts I let it install the current XP Service Pack 3. After this: The same issue as known from before!!!
So: There must be something wrong with current Windows updates + the 6715s AMD hardware.
Is there anybody at HP who can reproduce the problem? IMHO it comes with a certain software update so it's possible to fix it. Obviously there are thousands of customers stuck with the black screen issue out there. Please help!
Happy new year... Daniel |

I had used the workarrounds i posted here some time ago, but it was only partial workarround, the computer froze sometimes (at above conditions - after suspend -> resume -> using ethernet).
But now I updated the bios to F.0E and the problem apperars fixed (I had copied several gigabytes over the ethernet with dynamic power profile and still no hangs).
So, I suggest you to install F.0E and test it. |

I saw your thread about the blackscreen and I have the exact same problem on exactly the same notebook.
Contacted HP and the notebook has been at HP about 3 times now and now they escalated it to Level 2. I did all kinds of test like HD test, Memory test, reinstallation of OS (Vista Business) but no result yet.
Did you already get a solution or are you still having the same symptoms? |

Hello again,
good to hear that there's finally a solution. Unfortunately this didn't work for me. Does any of you know how I upgrade a F.07 (07/16/2007) BIOS to the obviously bug-free F.0E version? It loads at boot, but then it says that it is not possible to upgrade the BIOS. I tried this and the previous version (F.0D) with no success. Do I have to upgrade to another version first? Or could it be because I bought the Notebook from a german reseller? The version names are quite different, too. Did I got something wrong there?
Thanks for all your help!

My notebook is also the German version so that shouldn't be your trouble ;)
I did it via USB, just using the HP tool to bring the files to a stick. After that I did a reboot, entered BIOS, defined USB as first boot device. F10 to save settings (I think), then leave the BIOS.
MAKE SURE THE STICK CONTAINING THE BIOS FILES IS THE ONLY USB DEVICE PLUGGED! ;)
Now your notebook should boot from the stick, you only need to follow the instructions.

Hi all,
this issue is about 6715s and a frozen status some minutes after resume from standby. This was reproducible with Windows XP (SP3) and Windows Vista (SP1). HP Support suggested to do a full HD erase and reinstall Windows. This didn't help. The solution is to update BIOS to the current F.0E of november 08. For all still struggeling with the problem: Do the BIOS update. In my case it was very satisfactory: I can resume from standby as often as wanted, no more frozen screens. It must have been something around powermanagement... However, thanks for HP fixing this problem finally.

F.0E resolved a minor sequence problem inside the code path of the BIOS when the system resumes from Standby.
That is why the system does not show any failure if it tries to come back from Cold Boot or Hibernation but fails on Standby. |

Ok. Just to widen a bit the hardware perspective. I have a HP 8710w workstation with NVIDIA FX Quadro and I installed Windows7.
As I installed it, everything was perfect. No black screens, perfect resume from Standby or Hibernation.
Then I wanted to activate all the HP security features and I forced the install of the specific Intel Chipset provided for Vista32 on HP site.
Since then, Black Screens on Resume from Stand-by and a Intelppm.sys blue screen (OSD) when resuming from hibernation.
I tried to uninstall all the Intel system drivers possibly involved (from Device Manager) erasing the software source on Hard Disk. I left Windows7 reinstall Windows generic drivers, but I didn't solve the problem.
The Intelppm.sys blue screen failure tells me that there's something more I have to remove, to let Win7 update the driver.
I will try to edit the registry to avoid intelppm.sys image from loading (as suggested from a kind contributor), but if by chance someone knows which services are involved with this file, I will stop them, delete the file and let Windows repair the situation for me.
Thank you |

Hallo.. I am working in an Vista Business SP1 32bit as standard user. beside the problems with the standby and hibernation I had serious problems with the time needed to shutdown. This procedure needs up to fife minutes and at the end the screen turns black but the pc don't turn off. Furthermore some programs like skype couldn't be closed properly.. the change between LAN and WLAN also caused big problems. And there is another problem in changing energy profiles in the standard user. now I figured out, that the firewall Zone Alarm caused these problems (long shutdown, closing programs properly, switching energy profiles, change between LAN/WLAN). I uninstalled zone alarm and these problems are gone. There is only the Hibernation-Problem left and sometime when I close the display over night, the screen don't come back at the next morning so I have to cold shutdown. I hope, this helps some of you a little bit.

@Stefania: My advice is to start a whole new thread, as we're discussing 6715s notebook series here. We neither can help you nor check up your experiences because we do not own a 8710w. It's rahter unlikely that a 8710w user will find your issue here in this thread ;)

I think I found a solution for this mysterious black screen problem! (at least in Windows Vista)
The issue is somehow related to the hibernation and standby file, therefore, a quick deletion and recreation of this file should do the work.
1. Go to Start and type "cmd" in search box. 2. Right click the single result found (cmd.exe) and choose Run as Administrator. 3. Type in "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" (without quotes) and press ENTER 4. Type in "exit" and press ENTER 5. Turn off and then on your laptop 6. Repeat Step 1 and 2 7. Type "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" and hit ENTER 8. Type "exit" and hit ENTER 9. Restart your computer. That's it!
I hope this solution works for you, it worked for me, I had no sudden black screens since ages. |

I work for a college that has several of these laptops. The problems were intermittent and we tried installing XP instead of Vista. It offered a brief reprieve. The problem s continued and got worse. Three of the laptops now won't turn on at all. They spin up, I get the HDD light blinking 3 times and then and nothing else, it just sits there. No bios, no post no nothing.
HP support told me to take the optical drive the DD the memory and the battery out and leave it for four hours to let the 'static dissipate'.... morons. Am currently awaiting confirmation that the care packs we purchase were actually registered so that we can get an engineer out to replace the boards, but am a little disheartened to here on this forum that that may not permanently resolve this issue.
Has anyone ever fixed this problem? Is it always after about 13 months it starts to fail? |

Hello Daniel! I have the same problem as you: my 6715s won't start anymore. I stopped having the problem for many months now but 2 days ago it happened again and the laptop never started again (I mean it acts exactly like yours: the LEDs are on and the fan but nothing else). Did you do anything to solve the problem ? Please tell me if you did. Thanks |

Okay, let me join in on the 'fun'. I also have an 6715s, which sometimes does not want to start, at least, so it seems. If I plug in an external monitor, it works fine, except for the 'onboard' monitor; that one remains blank (and Vista tells me it is offline or something, at least detected but greyed out).
I did notice that this seems to be a temperature related problem; when the monitor did come on, it usually does not want to after a reboot. I had to leave it off for more than an hour before it works again. Also, since summer started in the Netherlands with 25+ deg Celcius temperatures, the monitor now doesn't come up during a cold boot either.
I guess I'll call HP soon and see if they know anything to fix this problem.
Oh and my bios is F.07 (latest version according to the website), but last time I tried to update/change it myself... well the whole laptop did not want to start anymore, so I'm a 'bit' reluctant to play around with that ;). |

After taking someone's advice on this chat thread and changing the Power Plan to High Performance, I have not experienced any more blank screens. |

There is no way (USB-stick, USB Diskette + CD) to upgrade from F.07 -> F.0B. Always the same message: "The BIOS on your notebook PC can not be updated. Refer to HP Customer Advisory C01457784 for more information andinstructions. Press any key to continue." It was reported that the F.0B and beyond try to write in the Boot block and the Winbond chip prevents this. Only some of the notebooks within serial number range CNU744*** through CNU805*** have this issue. Maybe HP could remove the sequence from F.0E that writes in the boot block ;-) Or is there a parameter for the rompaq.exe that skips writing of the boot block (like /Sb for the awdflash.exe ) It is a pity that some HP customers are excluded from all the improvements of F.0E because there is no Bios version for a certain hardware combination. |

It is a pity that some of the 6715b or 6515b can not be upgraded due to the problem with the Winbond BIOS chip.
In this case, you have the following options;
1. contact HP and ask them to replace the BIOS chip for you with the F.0E.
2. Contact a local electronic shop to replace the BIOS chip for you.
Sorry that I am run out of idea. |

Hell to all,
I have for one and a half years a HP Compaq 6715s and of course the same issue, the best dark screen ever (screen isn't deactivated, it's just illuminated black). First I have installed Win XP home edition for almost one Year, the black screen came from time to time, After XP I have try Ubuntu and for 4 month I forgot the black screen. Now I try the Win7 and the issue has come back, in the last 3 days my 6715s have the black screen for 3 times.
I will try to update my Bios and the Catalyst Driver and I will comeback with the results.
Configuration: Tyler AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-62 2.1MH, BIOS 68YTT Ver. F.07 ATI Radeon X1250 128MB RAM RAM 1x1GB+1x2GB
All the best,

Guys,
bad luk, I've try tu upgrade the BIOS but no luk, my BIOS can't be upgraded "The BIOS on your notebook PC can not be updated. Refer to HP Customer Advisory C01457784 for more information and instructions." I do not understand, on the Release Notes for ROMPaq for HP Notebook System BIOS (68YTT) - FreeDOS Bootable Media is stated the 6715s is suported but also on the Hardware Platforms Affected by the "HP Customer Advisory C01457784" is HP Compaq 6715b Notebook PC, HP Compaq 6515b Notebook PC, and my HP Compaq 6715s Notebook PC. It's unbeliveble, also when I try to contact the HP chat support my notebook is not suported anymore.
Shame on you HP,
Roland |
