The fan on my d510 went bad, and after dealing with HP tech support who wanted $60 for a new fan that they didn't have in stock I bought a standard 3-wire fan for $12.

After installing the fan I still get the "512-chassis fan not detected" error on boot. I tried resetting the CMOS but I still get the error. Is there something wrong with this new fan or does HP use proprietary equipment in their machines? And if it is proprietary how do I fool the motherboard into thinking I have an HP fan in there?

Hi

Probably the fan has wrong resistance. Look what reads on the old fans label, what is the mA reading. Try to buy a fan most near it.

a 100 ohm resister across the leads will fool the MOB into thinking there is a fan hooked up.

Use an OHM meter to read the resistance on the old fan to be sure.

But 100 ohms is what is used on most PC's to fool the bios.

After looking at another d510 I found the factory fan had the V+ and what I thought was the RPM sensor wire shorted at the connector.

So I shorted the two wires on my off the shelf fan and now it works perfectly.

You should have the 100 ohm resistor on it.

It keeps a tiny load on the circuit instead of a zero load short.
