I have a Windows compatable B/W printer (HP Laserjet 1100) that I'd like to use with my G5 PowerMac. Please can you advise on how to obtain the drivers necessary for doing this--or if it's possible at all! Thank you!

Did you every find a driver for your 1100? I need it also.

It seems HP never made a Mac driver nor ever will for this printer.

Anyone else have an idea?

You should take a look at:
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs

I haven't installed this yet but along with a parallel to USB adaptor, this might work. I'll let you know when I have time to test it.

After some trial and error, I was able to install an HP LaserJet 1100 to print from a Mac! Mine is installed across a network, shared by a Windows XP machine, which further compilcated issues for me.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1404
... is the Apple Support Forum article that told me how to add the printer across the network, but still the driver was missing!

Further snooping lead me to...
http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1217542942613+28353475&threadId=1155961
...which concludes with the original poster lying to the Mac and telling it the printer is not an 1100, but rather a 2100. That didn't work for me, probably because I don't have Linux OpenPrinting for Mac installed.

Trial and error, however, led me to try the HP LaserJet 4 Series driver w/ Gimp-Print v5,beta2, and *it worked perfectly*!

I think I must have got Gimp-Print when I installed the Gimp, which must have been /years/ ago.

I also tried several other of the non-Gimp print drivers listed, including the 4/4M, 4000, 4100 Series, and even "Generic Postscript", and all gave me the same garbage output (a cryptic single-line header followed by a maelstrom of blank pages) -- ie, they didn't work.

So it looks like the two verifiable options you have are to install Linux OpenPrinting for Mac, or Gimp-Print (another Linux take-off). Fortunately, they're both free and open-source.

Cheers!
