Hi,

I've just updated my SLED 10 SP1 to SP2. Now the wireless network card doesn't work.

Here's the info:

$ /sbin/lspci
...
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 USB Controller (rev 01)
07:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM 5788 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 03)
...

$ /usr/sbin/iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.

I still see the NetworkManager Applet in the 'system tray' area (now version 0.6.6), but it now only lists wired connections. There is no option to connect to wireless, and I never see any wireless networks. The output of iwconfig suggests that there are no wireless cards up either.

So what do I do from here?

The HP support site just has one download available for the HP mini note, an .iso image of the original install disc.

'Downgrade to SP1 and don't ever update anything' is not an acceptable solution for me. I notice that there is no official linux kernel support for the BCM4310 device yet, so it originally work with ndiswrapper? If so, any advice on which windows driver to use in conjunction with ndiswrapper?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm grateful that HP have offered a machine with linux, so I won't complain too much, but it is essential to support something like this, and not just assume that the linux community will sort out the rest. SLED is not so well used by the linux community, and this places a greater onus on the corporate support (i.e. HP and Novell).

Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Less than a week after my post, I gave up, and installed Ubuntu linux instead. The wireless driver works fine, and I'm much more satisfied with everything else.

The above recommended process to install the new Broadcom driver was pretty good and all done automatically with a couplke of clicks. However this wasn't enough. I had to specify the module to use "WL" in the WLAN Broadcom configuration (via YaST) under "Detailled Parameters" then "Advanced" and finally "Component details" / Module name". Sorry if this is not the exact translation but I am using a French version.

After this, the network light turned blue and I was able to connect to my Internet WIFI box and even after a few reboot.
